Is he up to date on his rabies shot? If not, you need to confine your pet. You will need to crate and take this dog asap to a vet.

If he does have rabies and bites anyone in your family, you are in for a series of shots that are very painful.

If you really suspect that the dog has rabies, you need to TAKE THIS VERY SERIOUSLY!

You don't have to be bitten to catch rabies from a dog. If he has it, it is in his saliva and other body fluids and just licking you can transmit it if there's an opening in your skin. Get him to the vet IMMEDIATELY and they will advise you on what to do about yourself and everyone who has been in contact with him. Without the shots, rabies is 100% fatal. Don't wait!!!

Actually, it would NEVER happen to me. First because my dog is up to date on her rabies vaccinations, and second because I would've taken her to the vet IMMEDIATELY after the raccoon fight (if she was or wasn't up to date on rabies).

This happened 2 weeks ago and all you want to do is pray? I can assure you that a vet visit would do a heck of a lot more than sitting there watching your dog die while you pray.

If your dog has rabies, then I'm pretty sure that means he will die. Unfortunately, this could've been prevented. However, now you are actually putting yourself and others in danger - real smart.

You MUST go to a doctor NOW and start post-rabies exposure treatment. You MUST take your dog to the vet NOW and have him quarantined. The health department will be called and unless your dog is current on rabies vaccines, they will most likely have to euthanize him and send his head to the state lab for rabies testing. In the meantime, you have potentially exposed everyone who has been in contact with Tonie to a 100% FATAL virus. I will pray that you do what needs to be done and that your family is safe. If Tonie is showing signs of rabies, he is already dead. You have precious little time to protect yourself and everyone he has been in contact with by starting post-exposure treatment. DO IT NOW.

Go to the vet and have him crate Tonie for the required time period.

Then go to a Dr and get rabies shots IF you miss more then 1 day after exposure (assuming dog has rabies and you get rabies) YOU are also doomed, they will strap you down in a chair/bed and you too will go mad,foam at the mouth and die. The old way of rabies treatment hasn't changed IF you don't get the shots in time!!!!....

Unless and its only worked once, they "kill' you by a coma chemically induced and your body has antibodys.

Ok slow down..does he have rabies vac? If he does then it may not be certain death. If he does not you must take him in right away, no ifs ands or butts. i will pray for him and all involved. Why was he where he could come in contact with coons un attended in the first place???

I never wrote a rain dance was a trivial thing, I merely wrote it would work as well as prayer (which is NOT at all) if an animal has rabies. If anyone disagrees, please point me to scientific studies. And shame on us?? How about showing a little bit of Christian kindness and tolerance??

Again...nobody knows what prayer can do. This is not the place to debate it. I have seen prayer stop Cancer, why not rabies? The girl simply asked for prayers...those of you that pray, offer prayers...those of you that do not need not respond.

This is the pet forum, not a prayer forum. People should take ill animals to a veterinarian and if they wish to pray for them, they should do so in combination with appropriate medical care.

It is incredibly irresponsible to pray for an animal which might have rabies instead of consulting a vet.

How am I being antagonistic? When someone gets offended that people are saying that prayer won't cure rabies, that seems a little over the top to me. Sorry, that's how I feel. If someone suspects that a dog has rabies, it upsets me greatly that the OP (if she/he is real) would not do anything for 2 weeks, and then come on this "pet forum" and ask us to pray. If you believe that prayer cures all, THIS is not the place to discuss it. I am not against religion or prayer - if that is what you interpret from my posts, I can't help that.

Not everyone is christian, and religion and politics are supposed to be restricted to Hot Topics. It is inappropriate for anyone to post to a non-religious forum just to ask for prayers. Especially considering the situation, if it is even genuine.

Sorry last time I looked it was a free country and it's quite ok to ask for prayers wherever you go. If you don't believe in them you need not respond. Or you have the option to respond with a refusal. This is your right. I really do hope this dog found a way to the vet. I hope the family is fine. Heck I hope the racoon is also ok. In a perfect world they are all ok! I CAN pray for that!

I don't think anyone would have had an issue with this person asking for prayers if it had not been in lieu of veterinary treatment. If it had been a situation of "my dog is undergoing medical evaluation for rabies, pls pray for him" there would not have been any problem whatsoever. People have asked for prayers for animals undergoing surgery or whatever on this forum before, and no one has objected. If this post IS genuine, like you, I do really hope everyone concerned is fine!!

Assuming the original poster is serious (he/she has not returned ), I'd like to give some advice not related to prayer or religion, which are topics more appropriately discussed on the Hot Topics or Animal Debates forums.

If your dog is suddenly acting differently with you than with everyone else, growling at you but not at other people, this is not a sign of rabies. It is a behavioral change specific to his interactions with you.

Have you done something differently, even by accident, that the dog didn't like? Is he still in pain from his injuries? Do you smell differently now, with some new scent he is reacting badly to?

I feel sure that with kindness and patience, you can gain your dog's trust again. Treats to reward good behavior can help too.

Also, stop taking his behavior so personally. He is a dog, with a dog's brain and understanding, not a human being trying to hurt your feelings. Your phrase, "a stranger no more worthy than dirt," makes me think you have low self-esteem. Try to find someone who can help you believe that you are a good, valuable person, whether or not your puppy growls at you.

1) I've never heard of a small dog surviving a raccoon attack.

2) Had the dog contracted rabies, he probably would have shown signs of it by the time the post appeared.

3) A pet can suffer post-traumatic stress, too. Since the dog was (supposedly) hostile to no one but OP, I'd hazard a guess that the dog felt that OP failed to protect him.
