What's the best time of year to buy spices?

I recently replaced my most-used spices with all new ones by placing a big order from Penzeys. The tarragon was wonderful, much better than the year-old stuff it replaced. I noticed lesser but definite improvements with other stuff as well. (The hot climate here in SC precludes me from growing many herbs--I've managed to kill off several tarragon plants over the years--so I have to depend on dried ones.) I've found Penzeys to be better than supermarket spices and herbs, most likely because they might have a bigger turnover than the local supermarket.

I wonder: does anyone know what time of year are dried herbs and spices the freshest? I'm sure it's different for different spices, and I don't know if there is any 'calendar' that says buy Turkish Bay leaves in October and black peppercorns in March. I would imagine that many herbs would be best in the fall, after they've had the summer to be harvested and dried, but that's just speculation on my part.

Any thoughts?

I think buying from a reputable supplier like Penzey's is the best way to go. I just refreshed mine from there.

I doubt there is any time line to help get the newest stock. Any seller is going to put the newest behind the older so that the older is shipped until gone. But buying from a specialty company that turns their stock fast you really shouldn't have to worry. Any good company should have their own shelf life guide.

When I worked for a specialty food company, we constantly watched our stock and as a store manager I kept my back stock low just before a new seasons products were due. Sometimes you just have to rely on people doing their job.

Do you have a farmer's market where you could buy fresh herbs? Drying your own is about the only way to guarantee the freshness.

I restock when my sister-in-law goes to Indianapolis, Indiana and offers to get me something from Penzey's and I don't have to pay shipping (LOL)!

When it comes to most herbs, the best time to harvest is in the spring as soon as the plant has something to harvest. After a long, hot, dry summer, after things have bloomed, stems get woody, and a lot of other variables, you won't get the quality you did in the spring. That's why I harvest and dry from my herb garden in the spring and use fresh herbs throughout the summer to late fall. In the fall, before the first frost, I'll harvest to make herb vinegars for gift giving and the pantry.

if your gonna order them the best time is when they are already dormant. that way they have a much bigger chance of surviving the transporting. if you buy them at a place where they know what their doing then it doesent matter, as long as its not located in another climate. the people would know where the plant is at in its growth and they could tell you the best way to go about adapting it to whatever situation it will live it at your home. if its a garden center or some place like that the best time is right now! people rarely know what to do with them in those places and every day they stay there they will get weaker. ---- VFT's make 2 types of leafs, the short groundhugging ones are produced during fall and after dormancy in spring it will create long slender leafs that stand upright. this might help slightly to determine where the plant is at...

Hi Greg, I just heard about Rogers for the first time yesterday! We do have a few specifics in mind (I would like more echeveria Mauna Loa and other "volcano" since I love the one I have,) but mostly I just want to look around and see what we like (I'm totally open to recommendations.) We have a few layout ideas but the plants are written in as "small filler," "large filler," "focal point, large," etc. Our house is a craftsman with a the typical reddish door and green window trim/ wood work so we do want to compliment those colors.

As you may have seen on some other threads, this is the time of year where you might be more likely to find some crazy- low pricing. Not all companies do, but some will just to stay busy. In regards to weather, it can be more difficult to schedule things in winter, but that probably depends on location.
