Console Table Behind Sofa

I have a console behind my sofa that just doesn't look "right". It's from my old house so it can go. I was looking around on house and saw that most of the consoles were almost at the height of the back of the sofa. Being that I have an open floor plan and you can really see the back of the sofa/table. Could this be what is wrong w/my space. My table is 7 inches at the low slope part and 10 inches lower at the highest point on the back of the sofa. Is this my ahhhhh moment???

Do they truly look best when they are higher, almost to the top of the sofa? Naturally, I won't be able to met the highest point other wise the ends would be above the back.

You might try building up the height by stacking books, magazines, boxes or baskets on top to see if increasing the height looks better to you.

Can you post photos for us to see?

I haven't figured out just what to put ON my console table yet, but here is mine. It comes up to the back height of the sofa, but the cushions are higher than that. That doesn't bother me.

I put old books on it because it makes the height better for me to put a drink down. :) Also, I haven't found anything else to put there. That's a whole different thread, though. :)

I'm leaning toward Seagrass or ivory table( surprise! Ha!) Patty...that table could def. work! Looks very close in color to the off white console table. I came across a round ivory one with glass too...all very inexpensive. The wooden one with the x chrome legs posted above was all of $200 yesterday...today...under $100! I guess my DH could get in for ' man-land' aka his office basement space. Dee... The artist is Jose Valverde Alcalde. I'd lived in Halifax, NS before moving to Ontario. These prints are from the South Shore of NS in Mahoney Bay and Chester...very quaint towns if you ever have the chance to visit Cdn east coast. They're my piece of home... My ' happy space' prints:) I have a few more of his pieces...all colourful.

I understand your modern design aesthetic, but modern doesn't mean no color at all. I like your idea of a much larger rug, and I would choose one that has colors in it that you like and that you can use for throw pillows on the furniture and other accessories. I agree with very neutral curtains that blend with the wall color or are cream or white. With a beautiful rug underneath you might want to choose a glass and metal coffee table to show the design and to take away some of the heaviness of the furniture arrangement. Places like overstock.com, amazon, ebay and others have lots of ideas for consoles. Have a look and see what you might like. Make sure they are long and/or large enough to make an impact in your space and large furnishings. I would also suggest a large rug under your dining table to soften that area. Try and be a little bolder in your color choices. A space can have warm colors and still look modern and simple. I think you also need paintings and books to give some life to your space.

IMO 2 floor lamps there will not look good , it will just look like you are trying to fill in space. There is nothing wrong with waht you have not every empty space needs something.Could you post some pics of the whole space . I sure would not close up windows if you don’t have to.

I would make that decision once the rest of the furniture is in place. Do you have a floor plan with your ideas on furniture placement that you could provide. So much depends on size of your furniture, layout, balance, and sometimes less is more.

If the height difference bothers you, here are two things you can do....first, as another post said, build up the height with books, a large decorative box, plants, or something sculptural. Whatever you put there should either stop below the height of the sofa, or be tall enough to be appreciated from both sides of the sofa (like lolauren's tall plant). Also, add visual interest by putting a throw or tapestry over the back of the sofa as a backdrop to the table. If you don't want it to be constantly moved or ruffled, tuck one end in between the sofa back and cushions, and let the other end hang between the table and sofa back.

Just buy some leg boosters - sorry I don't know what their real name is. Bed Bath and Beyond sells them to put under your bed legs so you have room to store stuff under your bed.

Lolaren - Your room is very pretty. I don't see any lamps. I would put two lamps on your table and remove the benches. I think the white benches are too stark against all the dark colors. Maybe have them refinished in a complimenting color pulled from your room. I would also just put 1 small stack of books and maybe a pretty bowl, platter, candle holder(s) I guess I'm suggesting decorative accessories for on your table.
I'm thinking the height you have is what I need for mine.
I can't put risers on the bottom as the legs aren't perfectly straight. Also, I don't mind getting a new table. My other pieces are washed w/goldish trim and also some mirrored pieces. My current table is a fruitwood color so it doesn't go well now.

Lolauren, the books are not working from a decor perspective, lol. A couple of piles yes, but a row of them across the whole back, looks funny.

Is there any way you could get an extra piece of leg spindle, stain it dark and add it to the current legs to raise the table a few inches? I think that since the legs and the floor are all dark, a small addition to the legs would be barely noticeable.

The room is lovely. The white stools are stark, but you have a lot of other white in the room too. Maybe you could darken just part of the stools, to make them blend. Either the tops or the legs.

Jeannie I don't think you have to raise your table if it is functional for you. As someone else said, I'd just put some tall things on the table.

My console table comes below the sofa (no pic) by about 3 or 4 inches, with the cushion tops above that, and it's a rather tall table. I like the height of lolauren's table, and that is the most pleasant to my eye. I would much rather see it lower than higher.

And, lolauren, you might want to consider a little classic Eileen Gray knockoff table for your gorgeous sofa. (How are you enjoying that new sofa BTW?) It wouldn't add much weight to your room and would add a little sparkle AND you can adjust it up and down, depending on how high you need it to hold your coffee. It's lightweight to move back to the side of the sofa when you don't need it and in front of it when you do.

OP: sorry, I didn't mean to hijack your thread! :( I started to reply to the comments above, but I think it's best if I actually start a new thread and don't hijack yours even more. I will do that later after work.
