Another ginger freak? Welcome!
We (especially DH) love ginger. For a while Cost Plus World Market was carrying Buderim,an Australian brand of candied/crystallized ginger. OMG it was perfect!
Of course, as places like Cost Plus are want to do, they stopped carrying it. No fear, I had one more bag. I phoned the wholesaler/importer in San Francisco. They said that size wasn't available anymore but they were importing a smaller bag. Okay, where can I buy it? She told me that distribution wasn't ready quite yet, but she'd send me a sample. That was months ago. Their website doesn't offer the price on the smaller sized bag.
I'm ready to ask a business friend who comes to visit the US from Australia if he'll search some out for us and bring in in on his next visit!

FYI See's Chocolates does a great piece of dark chocolate covered ginger which will do in a pinch, but Buderim's ginger was the best quality (no strings etc) that we've ever had!
Does anyone else know where we can get a stash?

Compumom, I found some Australian Ginger on Amazon. It only has 2 reviews though.

And here's Buderim Ginger from Australia, but they also sell in the US. They only sell 3 oz bags though.

Oh yes, I love ginger, I buy it at Trader Joe's sometimes but more often pick it up at the mediterranean market in Grand Rapids.

I've never purchased any on line, because I thought I was the only person in the world who just ate crystallized ginger (I do chop it finely and add it to gingersnaps too, LOL). It's also great for motion sickness, BTW....

I just bought some a few months ago from a wholesale spice company in Truro on Cape Cod. I only paid $6.99 for a one pound bag of the sliced crystallized ginger. They have it listed now at $10.00 for 16 ozs. It has a light coating of fine sugar on the slices and is fresh and tender.

I like the TJ's. Some of the others have a bit of a bitter taste to me. Since I'm in chemo, my DH has been bringing home various ginger items to help with nausea.

The "ginger chips" from TJ's are my favorite. Thin shavings of ginger, dried and slightly sweetened - they are crunchy-chewy with excellent flavor.

I really envy those of you who have a TJ's in their area. We're in TX, and we don't have a single one in the entire state.

It's an odd business to find on the outer Cape, but I guess that's where the guy wants to live and work. When you pull into the parking lot you can smell the spices and once inside the retail part of the store the smells are just incredible.

I usually buy the bulk spices and split them with friends/family. If you like to craft, they have great deals on dried herbs and flowers.

Speaking of wreaking havoc with the budget . . .

I was given a box of glace baby Australian ginger from this company. It costs the earth but it is bar none the very best candied ginger I've ever tasted. It comes plain or chocolate covered - same outrageous price but unequalled.

I've only had the crystallized once and ordered it from King Arthur Flour. Mostly used it for baking, but I did snack on it a little.... it was pretty hot!!!

Thanks for the reminder, since I'm all out and I'll probably make some ginger scones for xmas presents!

I'm also a ginger lover who lives in Texas. I buy my candied ginger at HEB grocery store (in the bulk food section) and at a local health food store.

HEB charges $3.89/lb, which I know because I'm sitting here eating it out of the bag!

TJs has good ginger. The Ginger People gingers are awesome, especially the mini chips. (Wish I could say the same for their sauces.)

beanthere, I agree about The Ginger People--great ginger, terrible sauces.

I found it in the Indian food section of my local Wegmans. Check around, maybe there is a local Indian market or grocery store or health food store that carries it. Use the Internet or phone book and call around first. I just found it by chance, so no more ordering online to break the bank.

Katyroadpink (love that rose ;o), our local HEB doesn't have a bulk section, we're in the boonies. I'll check next time we're in San Antonio.

DH bought the ginger from TJ's and it might have been the batch, but I thought it tasted like moth balls! Ewwww! He ate it, but said he probably wouldn't buy it again.

I am also a ginger lover. In fact I will choose something either gingery or (tart) lemony over chocolate any day.

There is a family owned local specialty food store that usually stocks some of The Ginger People products. But I have found them at TJ Maxx and Marshall's for nearly half the cost. It is a hit or miss thing, though. When I'm there I usually scout out the food section to see if there are any, and if so, I stock up.

When DS was living in CA he shipped some of the See's choc. covered ginger candies to me for my birthday. They were worth every calorie!

I just called a local health food store, and they do sell it, so I'll be off to buy some after work. They said they used to sell it in bulk, but it didn't sell fast enough. So now they just sell the small bags. I guess those of us who love to snack on it are in the minority. :o)
