Canada for me, too. I choose it because the people are friendly and they speak the same language in most places. Plus I like their health care plan!!

Have you ever watched HGTV's show where people buy vacation homes (or retirement homes) in a foreign country? It's really interesting, especially the shows where they are in tropical climates and those old stone homes in Europe.

Probably England. I've never been there though, so I might hate it.

In England, I'd be considered a "colonial" ... they're sort of stuffy, over there: I live in a much more individualistically permissive and innovative society. While I have a much more community-related outlook and have a stronger loyalty to socially-related and responsible concepts, which I consider part of my Christian responsibility(1), than do many in this part of the world, they're too traditional, rather last-century for me.

I think it would be either France or Italy. I've never been to either.

In reality, it would probably be Australia or New Zealand but just dreaming, it would be Italy. Either the Amalfi coast or Tuscany.

It looks like a few don't know what continent they are in? This wasn't a question as to whether you could stay where you are, this was a question as to where you would go if you had to go. :)

People in the Philippines are familiar with North American customs, are friendly, courteous people, speak English, sympathetic to freedom and democracy and have aspirations to further them, though with some backsliding on occasion (as don't we all?).

Some concern with kidnapping in some areas. Hot and very humid in August.

Visited Manila, Cebu and Legaspi (near Mayon volcano) in 1953 ... will that qualify as having been there?

I would go back to Germany in a heartbeat. Lived there for 4 1/2 years and loved it. I miss a lot about it...maybe not the ice and snow, though...

Another vote for County Cork Ireland. Specifically Glengarriff, a very small village on Bantry Bay. The Gulf Stream warms the coast line which allows for wonderful gardening and the area is perfect for fishing, kayaking and hiking in the mountains....and of course socializing in the pubs.

I would like to spend a lot of time in both County Cork and County Clare, as I have ancestors from both places. But, to live -- Italy. :-)

I've never been there but if I have to choose it would be Ireland.

My first reaction was Australia, but since I've never been there I'll go for a known entity...Italy. I could barely last a week in Japan so I know that's out of the question for me.

I really never have desired to live in another country,
however, my son that was in the Air Force and traveled the world said, to him, Germany was most like the US and liked it.

I never had the desire to leave this country.

I guess if I had to choose it would be somewhere down under. I would have to be within a short driving distance of the beach. The ocean is my life force.

If I had to leave the USA, I would want to go to South Wales.

Sounds like a number of you would like to come here. I moved from USA to England in 2002 when I married my British husband. I like it here but trust me the language is still different. My husband tells me I speak American not English. I do love the country side, we live in a very rural area near Liverpool, I would hate living in London. I still miss home (US) and my part time job at a large garden center allows me to have summers off so I can still go back to spend time with family and friends, of course if they could be here with me that would make life easier. I still miss the groceries, craft stores and other items easily found in US, which would explain why my luggage is just under the weight limit when I come back here in Sept. I always said I wanted to live on an island.........in my head I was thinking more tropical...I guess I was specific enough!! LOL
