baked beans and other shortcut recipes

I am making baked beans in the first snow of the season. I am perfectly willing to use premade ingredients in cooking - after all I don't harvest my own cane to make molasses or brown sugar. But last night I was baffled by all the recipes for baked beans that went something like this:
1/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup brown sugar
1 onion chopped
3 cans baked beans/pork and beans

Having prepared endless cans of baked beans with pork for my grandmother who loved them with kielbasa. I can't imagine how sweet these recipes must be. They seemed to be adding to already sweet beans the same quantities as the from scratch recipes I was reading.
