Making a wall hanging from decorator fabric?

Has anyone made their own wall hanging from decorator fabric? If so, how did you do it and were you pleased with it? Any changes you'd make if doing another one? Did you just turn the top to the back to make a rod pocket or did you line it and make a separate rod pocket attached to the lining? I want to make one (or two) for my home plus a friend wants me to help her make one. I do sew so that's not a problem, but I'm just not sure how to make it so that it hangs well. All input will be greatly appreciated!

I've had a needlepoint that I stitched made into a wall hanging. I do lots of handwork but don't have a sewing machine anymore so I use a 'finisher' but impart lots of instructions to them. I requested tabs at the top to fit on a decorative wooden rod and I draped tassels at the edges. I used an upholstery fabric to frame the needlepoint area and covered it with gimp and edged the entire piece with a large welt. My finisher had to use an innerface (is that the correct term?) on the inside to make the tapestry hang with a bit more stiffness and in an even manner....hope this helps....

I made one for a friend recently. I did line it with a cotton drapery lining. I actually think it is easier to do that way. You just sew the tow layers together like a pillowcase and turn right side out. After, I then folded over the top for the rod pocket. Good Luck!

If it's a focal wall, wouldn't you want the wall hanging to be the focus and the center of attention? Also, a busy print needs room to "breathe." Not knowing how much space is left over on the sides, I second Sueb20's advice. (Also, if the decor is modern, I wouldn't think you'd want a lot of other wall decor vying for attention. Blank space is actually a good thing!)

california dreamer, anyway you could get a photo of the friend's curtains? My new bedroom is window less, only has a single glass door. I was thinking of hanging curtains behind the bed, so I'm curious to how the curtains look hanging on each side. If you can't get photo's, can you give some dimensions of the curtains vs the size of the wall? liz, Christopher Lowell, famed TV personality and designer, loved, loved, loved fabric covering walls. And would you mind an unsolicited comment about the length of the drapes - would it be possible to lower the curtain rods approximately four inches until they skim the floor? Or, better yet, are they available in the next size longer? Then the rod could be hung close to the top of the wall and it would make your ceilings look higher. Also, if it were still possible to consider purchasing more panels, having double panels on each side of the windows would give the drapes more presence. If this were possible and if the rods could be extended 8 to 12 inches past each side of the window, the light and views wouldn’t be blocked.

Curtain brackets would look really cool. Like these ones, if you don't want it to stick out too far: Or, squared off black steel or iron hooks like this below. Be sure to check measurements to make sure the inside of the hook is the right size for that pole. You say you had wall studs mounted at the right height? in that case you'll be fine. anchors are not necessary when you have studs.

Begoniagirl, You've been holding out on us! What a warm, cozy beautiful room! My 'lamp lust' is ignited by the lamps to the right of the GORGEOUS fireplace, but it's all just amazingly inviting.

The stiffener that your finisher would have used is 'interfacing'. :-)

Begoniagirl, your needlepoint looks wonderful...I love the way you did it with the border, tassels, etc. Thanks for the details. Your room looks so well 'put together' with your own individual style which is really welcoming and cozy...I love it! I can't tell for sure from the picture but it also looks like you have some decorative paintings...did you do those too?
