I need your opinion. What color goes best with black and white?

Here's my dilemma:
We just remodeled our kitchen. Floor was redone with 12x12 black "slate-looking" tile. Cabinets have a glossy white finish (Ikea Lidingo series). Haven't purchased appliances yet. Our limited budget is pretty much exhausted, so we've temporarily installed laminate countertops (also black - Ikea Mineral stone). Back splash and walls are currently a cream color. It looks horrible with the new floor and cabinets. We want to tile the back splash, but we'd prefer to do that after replacing the laminate countertops with granite (which could be quite awhile.) So, in the meantime, we need to just paint the walls and back splash with a color that will harmonize with our black and white kitchen. The shades that come to my mind would fall along the gray spectrum, but I feel like it would be a depressive appearance.
Any suggestions?

any color will go with black and white...I particularly like aqua or yellow.

Thank you for the courteous response, Annie. I love yellow, so I might give that some consideration. I've always been partial to colors that are bright or soothing. It's a psychological thing with me. Dark colors tend to depress me, so the "dark color" allotment will be limited to my charcoal-ish floors and the black hardware on my white cabinets.

I'd absolutely go with the black (I can't remember the correct name) Silgranite sink. I have darker granite also, verde peacock. Not only does it look amazing but it's the best sink functionally I've ever owned and I've had quite a few! We tore out a stainless steel sink we had just installed a couple of years ago because it looked as old as our 20 year old house! I always assumed they'd be too pricey. Boy was I tickled when I saw how affordable they were. We bought ours sight unseen online based only on the advise of the forum folks and they didn't guide us wrong! We love it and I guarantee you will too!

Colour best that goes with black

The cabinets are a light oak colour and backslash is black, there is light coming there, I was thinking that too with the red. What other colours would go with this apart from the cream? Just moving in to the place this is the first room to be decorated the colour was in the kichen before I got it but I did add the black flooring to go with the worktops and the splash back.

The actual sofa won’t be delivered till November but I’ll post the sectional from their web site, except ours will be in the material I posted. The floors are the same as in the kitchen photo... limestone. I am not home now but I’ll post a photo of a neighbor’s kitchen/ family room with the same layout, just different flooring etc. It’s hard to see but there’s a big TV across from the sofa and a fireplace. Our sectional will not be quite as long as theirs is on the wall with the windows.

Ahhhhh, Annie, as always, has the right answer. Aqua and yellow would be my choices as well!
A creamy buttery yellow would warm your kitchen right up!
