I need some opinions on what color sink to choose....

Hi!

I haven't posted much yet in this forum, but i've been following many of your beautiful kitchens for quite a while.

We are building a new home ourselves. It's almost totally DIY. We are now to the point of finishing up the electric svc. and I need to complete my kitchen plans. I have a few design appointments later this week, but i'd like to be semi prepared before I go.

I have several dilemma's right now but we'll take it one at a time. :)

I need to figure out what style sink to go with, but first am trying to decide on what color sink will go best with the rest of the kitchen. I'm thinking farm sink, but not 100% set on that.

The kitchen style will be modern primitive country if that makes any sense. Funny, I know. ;)

Here is a rough idea of the cabinet, countertop, & floor shades....

I am pretty set on Black Galaxy granite. Flooring will be roughly that shade of hard wood planks. I'm leaning toward a distressed, antiqued off white cabinet with possibly an accent cabinet in distressed black.

Any thoughts on that color combination and what sink color you think would work best? I'm really having a tough time deciding.

Oh, and I will probably be going with stainless appliances.

I love my Silgranit and think the anthracite colour would look amazing wiyh your choices

My decorating style is country primitive as well, and I'm considering a double bowl copper farm house sink. Search the web for Copper Depot.

I'm thinking a double bowl because it's just the two of us, and we do wash dishes by hand.

Yay, glad you're getting your Super White! I had an idea that might help you test out whether a small prep sink will work or not. Find a plastic bowl or tub in the approx size and shape of the sink you'll be able to fit into a 12" cab, drill an appropriately sized drain hole in the bottom (I think someone posted sinks this small would have something like a 1.5" drain hole,) and fit a piece of PVC pipe into it. You'll need to caulk it to seal it. Then put it in a sink or over a bucket, pour a pot of water into your mock-up sink as if you were draining pasta water or a pot of boiled potatoes and see how well it works. Or doesn't. It's not going to be fool proof dry run (er, uh, wet run, haha), obviously, but if the mock-up doesn't work well, it's likely a good bet the real thing won't either. btw, our pop-up tent camper has a small sink in the kitchen area, and after the first few mishaps, I learned to pour a pot of water very slowly to keep water from splashing all over the place. The sink is wider than a small prep sink, its depth is similar to the depth of old SS sinks. In other words, shallow. That's my experience with small sinks. YMMV.

With my other bathroom, I used this same gel stain and the plywood end next to the toilet was the spot I started with, and how I found this technique. I put the gel stain on with a dry brush, and coated it evenly. Then I dipped the brush in a cup of thinner and went over the whole thing, wiping off the excess onto a rag every so often. That thinned it without wiping it off. When it was the thickness I wanted - the right amount of grain showing through - I went over it one more time with just the very end of the brush and that feathered out most of the brush marks. But I sanded the plywood end on this bathroom down too much I think, and the gel just wasn't as workable. I didn't sand anything except that one end, so the rest should be easier. I also used a rag, a nylon one I think, to do the drawers and doors and didn't have any problem with it going on too thick or wiping off too much. I tried a cotton rag and it did take off too much.

I had a similar situation in my kitchen with a dark golden brown countertop and a Silgranit sink. I went with the Cafe Brown color even though nothing else in my kitchen was brown and the trim was all white because the sink blended with the counters better. I love it. I think you'd be really happy with the black for that reason. Also, my dark sink really does hide stains, discoloration, etc. I almost fear ever returning to a white sink!

kitchenredo08, thanks! I think you may be right.....that would look really good. I'm not familiar with Silgranite and would love to see it in person. Did you buy yours locally or online?

lodalady, I am going to check out Copper Depot right now. I really love the primitive style, but hoping to jazz it up a little with some whimsical, modern touches.
I've always had a double bowl and have never, ever owned a dishwasher.
That's all going to change with the new kitchen!

I think the anthracite (black) silgranit sink would be amazing, too... and really just BLEEEEEND in with the granite and be gorgeous!!!

Oooo Lodalady..that sounds nice! MamaBirrd, copper might look nice w/the Black Galaxy!

If not copper, then probably the anthracite Silgranit.

I'd absolutely go with the black (I can't remember the correct name) Silgranite sink. I have darker granite also, verde peacock. Not only does it look amazing but it's the best sink functionally I've ever owned and I've had quite a few! We tore out a stainless steel sink we had just installed a couple of years ago because it looked as old as our 20 year old house! I always assumed they'd be too pricey. Boy was I tickled when I saw how affordable they were. We bought ours sight unseen online based only on the advise of the forum folks and they didn't guide us wrong! We love it and I guarantee you will too!

I have a black granite sink by Swanstone and black labrador granite. I love the sink. I was worried that black would be hard to keep clean, but I find the opposite to be true. I have to remind myself to clean it! It never looks dirty.

Mamabirrd, We're going with a silgranit sink in our farmhouse kitchen but going with the cafe colour because our palette is more the antique whites/browns. But I have a question about your floor. Is it the original floor and if so what kind of wood/stain is that? I really like it and want something like that when we redo our floors...TIA!

I have a black galaxy center island and a Silgranite Black sink. The Silgranite has more flexs of gray and the Black Galaxy will have flexs of copper but I would still think it would look good
