where to put baby bunny?

I found a baby bunny that was left from a nest that my dog destroyed. my girlfriends little brother has been taking care of it for about a week now and its doing just fine it seems. its eyes just opened the other day and it is eating replacement milk and pooping. Today we found a baby bunny nest that seems to have little bunnies the around the same age. Anyone know if its ok to put our bunny with the new bunny nest?? THANKS

i found a young bunny once after a big storm, he was half dead. I took him home and cared for him for a few days and then started calling around to vets to get a check up. In my area there are only certain vets that will deal with wild animals.

Anyways, the vet I found refferred me to a rehab and sancturary for wild animals. They try to rehabilitate the animal to be released into the wild and if it can't be they keep it on their property with others of their species and age. The bunny had a bad eye infection and went blind in one eye so he was kept on their site.

Years later my husband hit a racoon, didn't actually run over it with the tires - just went under the center of the truck. He picked up the racoon and brought it home. We kept it in a kennel for the night and contacted the same rehab the next day. They rehabilitated the guy in two weeks and released him in a safer area.

Perhaps if you call around to vets in your area you could find something like this?

I would probably see if you can find a local wildlife rehabilitation center in your area first.

If you don't have such a resource, you could try to reintroduce the bunny into the other nest, but if its less than two weeks old, its still relying on milk and I doubt another Mom would let it nurse. IF you did put it in the other nest, I would keep a close eye on it to make sure it doesn't starve or get kicked out.

I think putting it in that nest is probably better than feeding it and releasing on its own.

I could also use some advice on this topic. My husband came home with 2 baby snowshoe hares that he saved from certain death. He watched a bird take off with 2 of them before he realized what they were and when he wandered over to where the bird was snatching them from he found one frozen to death (we'd had a dump of snow the night before) and only 2 left. He picked up the two remaining bunnies (with an angry bird circling above him) and actually had to gently peel one of them off the ground, it had started to freeze there. So now we have these baby bunnies at our house. We've already fed them once. I'm pretty sure we're ok in the feeding, caring for them area. The only time we've even touched them is to move them or to feed them. My question though is...how do I know how old they are??? I want to be able to release them again but I don't want to do it to late or to soon. I have read that snowshoe hares are actually born with fur, eyes opened and ready to hop. So apparently those aren't going to be good indicators. Does anyone know approximately how old a snowshoe hare might be if it's only about 2"-3" from bum to nose?? Please help. :) Thanks.

There may be a local wildlife resource near you who can advise and/or help with this. People aren't very sympathetic until they see how cute they are. What you don't want is to be bitten by the mom. Rabbit bites can be really serious in terms of bacteria as well as teeth going all the way through your finger. Ask me how I know...I had a pet bunny and it bit my dad when he was hand feeding it. You did the right thing, putting them back and creating a marker to see if she returns. Just check, without coming close to the nest, to see if the leaves were moved. If the leaves are moved, all is well and mom is taking care of her babies. If the leaves are intact, get the name of a wildlife rehabilitator and ask exactly how you can transport them for care. Regarding the littlest one: mom will take care of it. Runts often survive. Try to keep away from the nest, because that leaves a scent trail for raccoons, foxes and coyotes.

You are a lovely good hearted person! But bunnies need to be left to their own devices. I think trying to corral them will not help them. They need to survive on their own.

Just for your info.....By the time a baby bunny is 3 weeks old, it is pushed out of the nest and on it's own, if this gives you any help.

Call your vet for a rehab facility. I don't know about your area but it is against the law in ours to keep wildlife. Some vets here have vets or staff members that are certified as wildlife rehabilitators (something like that) that are allowed to tend to wildlife that is sick or injured.
It is difficult to raise a wild baby bunny and most of them don't make it unless they receive proper care and nutrition. For best interest of bunny, seek out a rehab facility asap, GOOD LUCK :)
