Cruelty To Dog Considered Art!

I just received this info from a friend. I checked it out on Snopes it said that it's validity is "undetermined." I think a pictures says a 1000 words!

Unless you've ever been to a place where its common place to see starving dogs on the streets, it probably doesn't make sense.

That is not art. Capturing a natural moment is art. He forced a moment therefore it's exploitation and killing. Very sick and inhumane man.

Unfortunately some countries do not look upon pets as we do.

Thank God there is a God. I'm sure that dog is in a much better place now.

Judy, thanks for the commiseration. Fortunately, my bug lasted only a few days. Being sick all winter sounds rough. You said, "However, I'm still slow to register when something untoward is developing... " I'm raising my hand on that one, too. One reason many of my orchids looked so far gone all of a sudden was because everything developed slowly, and my eye wasn't educated enough to see it in the early stages. Follow up to a couple of earlier questions - If that Phal was doing well in the West window, can you put it back there? Can you put all your plants there? :) Because your Catts and Oncs are putting out leaves but not spikes, they may not be getting enough light. Also, has the new construction from the East reduced the direct light for a significant amount of time? If so, maybe that's a factor. If the owner of that shop seems to have a clue, could you ask him if you could bring in some of your plants for him to look at? (Maybe ask one of his staff what his favorite sweets are and return the favor via calories. :)) Olya, Brad, Kevin, Cory - on second thought, your comments about science vs art make sense. My grandmother never used a recipe and was one of the best cooks and bakers I've run across. Everything from scratch. However, she had to have many scientific principles in her head to make dinner rolls so light that only lots of butter would keep them on your plate. LOL She'd learned so much science that her meals looked and tasted like art. Judy & Mehitabel, for some atypical, beginning orchid addict reason, I went for plants that would likely like my conditions. Early on, it was frustrating to learn definitions of "Intermediate conditions" were open to interpretation: Would all my ____ orchids die? Judy, this might help. After "Intermediate" turned out to be unreliable, I started emailing or spelling out details of my conditions to growers and *then* asking if a certain orchid would likely thrive. Direct light - direction & which hours; supplemental light & # of hours; temp ranges inside, winter and summer, and outside in the summer; air movement; fertilizer & schedule; and humidity ranges. Just realized - this is probably a transfer from choosing dog breeds and breeders. By comparison, matching an orchid to what I want & can provide is a snap. kt- what terrific photos of terrific pieces. you have really made my day. so exhilerating! what i love about these pieces is that his work is so reflective of the tropical plants themselves. the long twisted pieces are often obviously influenced by actual tropical plant parts. in keeping with their surrounding plants, they add color and excitement to some otherwise more monochromatic visuals. it's funny, i have seen many many of ch's pieces, and been to the tacoma, wa. museum that houses much of his work- but i have never before seen pieces so simpatico with their environment( certainly NOT the huge venice installation). your photos definitely rekindle my interest in him, so thank you. i think your re-positioning of the iron pieces- amongst your ferns- is brilliant. as to the bigger 'art in the garden' discussion, i do have a few thoughts. we have a lot of garden art throughout the gardens here, and most of it has some size. for me, the pieces provide contrast and counterpoint to the surrounding world of plants.however, even as they provide contrast, they must make visual sense for where they are placed.they also have personal associations for me, and some of them ( quotes and poetry) reflect my feelings and give me pleasure to read when i'm in my gardens. all of them make me smile. outwardly or inwardly. two large pieces make me laugh- and that is specifically why I purchased and installed them, though they are in our work area. one rule that i have developed for placement is that i try to not have more than one art piece in any given 'visual frame' (unless they are symmetrically matching.)each garden room has its own artwork that is not visible from one room to another. the art pieces do not jump out at you. 'garden art' includes 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional sculptures, sculptures that incorporate movement- from water or wind,and some incorporate architecture- as a backdrop to the piece or as the piece itself. all this garden art is a real life saver when the gardens are not their most attractive (like now, with all the stress of the hot summer and when it's quite 'jungley' out there. i find them particlarly valuable in shady sitting areas where large swaths of non floral plants can really use the surprise element. at the risk of sounding overblown, here is a poem that i keep over my desk- that says it all for me- about the gardens and about the art in the gardens. I pray for an arresting beauty a single span of pure delight Intrude upon us. Give us pause Be the deer in the yard, the wine in the water cask, the mermaid in the net. -Thomas Donovan surprise, delight, reflection, contemplation, nourishment- all the things i hope are provided by the art pieces throughout our gardens.

Art is such a personal thing. The kincaid in the original post strikes my heart with fear (I hate them...they're creepy IMO) and yet my best friend loves the horrible things. I don't look for art and would never go shopping to fill a space, from a galary or mall, because it never works. Instead when I'm out and about, sometimes art just happens along my path. Sometimes I find it in the attic LOL You just never know. I have a gorgeous bronze nude in our front parlor. If you would have asked me if I'd have a gorgeous bronze nude in my parlor prior to us seeing it at an auction I'd have probably laughed in your face, but when I saw her I just had to have her. DH and I both love her and she fits perfectly in the room. In the same room there is a tin lithograph of a steam ship. Huge thing from the turn of the century. I tripped over it at an antique show and it wouldn't take no for an answer. As to the pet picture...I'd encourage you to have a good artist paint your puppy. A dear friend of ours just lost their kitty. They do not have children and their kitty was their baby. We had a local artist paint him from photo's for them as a suprise gift in his memory when he died. It did bring tears, but it also evoked positive memories for them as well. He was a wonderful friend to them and memorializing the dear boy in a quality art piece was worth every penny to us and to them :) Art should be that personal IMO Stay away from the Thomas Kincaids please :P

P Banos: Thank you for your thoughts; I agree, I initially wanted a much larger piece there!! I just couldn't figure out how to make it work with the lamps. They would end up blocking the art. I can't move them much further apart because the right one would end up right at the corner of that wall, which would look off. Is it okay to have them block the art in this scenario? I'll photoshop three examples (same random painting I happened to screenshot) ... you tell me where I'm wrong in size/placement (keeping in mind the lamps can't be moved apart much further); do any of these work? Largest size, not centered over sofa but centered on the wall... Still large, but a bit smaller to allow for centering over sofa (still blocked by lamps)... Narrower width, portrait orientation (width would have to be just a bit wider than the current painting to somewhat fit between lamps)... Thoughts?

Cities like Port au Prince, Mexico City, San Jose, have feral scavenger dogs walking the streets every day. These dogs are on the brink of starvation. Thousands of people walk by them every day, ignoring them. These cities don't have animal control or animal welfare societies like we know of in the United States. These cities struggle with keeping people fed and healthy, dogs are low on their priority list.

When I see these dogs I am appalled, but the people who live there consider it normal. These dogs are treated like we would treat rats. This guy took one of those dogs off the street, changing its context and making people more aware of what goes in front of them everyday.

Its not warm and fuzzy, and its not art... but the guy was making a "social statement"... and its hard for us to understand that statement when we don't live in that society.

Exploiting the suffering of an animal for "art", or even to make a statement, is despicable. Anyone with any compassion would try to help, at least feed the dog, or have him humanely euthanized if recovery is not possible.

Sorry Joepyeweed, but I just don't agree. Tying up a dog with a very short rope and starving it is not worth a "social statement". The same message can be sent by photographing a starving dog in its natural environment...not by forcing it to exist in a 'torture chamber'.

If this dog was roaming the streets in one of those locations you mentioned, at least it would have the ability to scavenge for itself. This dog didn't have that chance.

The dog WAS roaming the streets, and he tied it up for a few hours in the gallery. People were shocked by the dog, however those same probably just walked past very similar dogs on their way to the gallery and paid them no attention.

Its horrible to see a starving dog on display in an art gallery, and its even more horrible that the same display happens every day on the streets in front of everyone. And no one does anything about it.

I didn't saying that its right or its wasn't cruel, I just said I can understand the point, because I've seen the same dog in other places...

In fact, I have a picture of two starving dogs humping on the streets of Carrefour.

Ok, I understand. I thought it was a longer period of time, and that the dog was purposefully kept away from any means to find food or water. I see your point.
