I also have a few dings that were in the wall before the paper went on. All small stuff. Gardz before or after? And while I am at it and, have your attention...do I need to prime after the Gardz? Yes, if you have any open places where the drywall and the facing paper are exposed, I would suggest you seal this up first with your Gardz. This stops and seals any future problems with the exposed drywall. Do your patch work, sand, dust really good, and then use Gardz as an allover primer for the entire wall. As paintguy mentioned, Gardz is clear so if you are planning on using any type of at least a base 3 or darker color with less Ti02, I would use a good hiding primer before applying your finished topcoat. Hello, We have just put on the first coat of paint (following all the steps I listed above), and we are having a real "tacky/sticking" problem. We are using Valspar eggshell, which we have used in several other rooms with no problems. When I go over the same spot twice (just normal blending) the roller is pulling the paint off -- or clumping it together -- not sure how to best describe it. It sometimes happens on the first roll, but usually it's on the second time over the same spot. We will be applying a second coat, but I am wondering what we can do to fix the spots that are still rough (sand?). Is there something we can do to prevent this happening again? What can be causing it? I'm going to attempt to attach 2 pictures Thank you very much for any advice. I don't think this project is EVER going to end -- or end well! Sand. Sand, and sand. Begin with a pole sander using #150 grit sandpaper (aluminum oxide grit). That will break open most of the finish. Follow that with a sanding of #180 to smooth it as much as possible. After sanding and dust cleanup, wash the walls with ammonia and hot water solution. Allow it to dry. Inspect. If it's acceptable you can prepare to prime. Use GARDZ to prime and lock down any residual paste. DO NOT USE ANY OTHER PRIMER. GARDZ is your ticket to a satisfactory finish. Do you have any paint stores or hardware stores? Try those. I just used BIN primer and the smell wasn't too bad. For another project someone recommended Smart Prime. I haven't done it yet so can't comment on smell. I have used Gardz and it was stinky. I didn't think it did that good of a job. I thought we had scrubbed the walls pretty clean and then used the Gardz but still had some issues from the residual glue we didn't even see.
