Primer for after removing wallpaper - can't find gardz

I have read over and over to use gardz after removing wallpaper to seal the walls. Unfortunatley I can't get it at either Lowes or Home Depot here - I haven't been able to find it anywhere.

The last room I needed to remove wallpaper in I used Kiltz oil based paint and the smell was very strong (and messy!)

I saw "odorless" kiltz at Lowes, oil based, and I wonder if it is really odorless or close to it? I also saw water based Bulls Eye that said it was a sealer but I am not sure if it will work for this application?

Can anyone suggest what I could use that would not have as strong of an odor as regular oil based kilz for this? I have a household member that is extremely sesitive to smells - causes migraines - but I really want to do this right.

Try a PPG store for Gardz. The "odorless" Coverstain will work but it still smells. Open some windows and get a couple fans blowing, the smell dissipates pretty quick.

Thanks Christopher; we don't have a PPG store either. I may have to wait a while to paint then; its been super hot and dh loves his air conditioning so opening windows is a no-no!

I will keep looking.

I just used Gardz last night to start the repair process in the bathroom I just painstakingly stripped wallpaper off unprepared dryway (what a nightmare - I am still cursing whoever did this!). I sanded it down pretty well, but there were still little chunks of glue that I could not get off. Anyway, the gardz cost $30 a gallon, and my local store did not carry it in quarts. I used very little as it is quite thin. It did an amazing job of "sealing" that drywall and I feel alot better about moving forward with this! Some of that pesky glue actually loosened while I was applying the gardz and I scrapped it off as I went. This morning, I have a fairly smooth (well, excepted where the drywall is torn and we have to skim coat) wall and it feels like a nice consistent surface sealed from any residual glue etc. The can says to sand, apply gardz, do the skim coat, sand and then reapply gardz. I was going to use a normal white tint primer for the second application - over the skimcoat as i think that is the advice I read on this forum. Do I need to apply the gardz over the skimcoat like the can says? thanks for the recommendations, this seems to be a great product!

Hello, We have just put on the first coat of paint (following all the steps I listed above), and we are having a real "tacky/sticking" problem. We are using Valspar eggshell, which we have used in several other rooms with no problems. When I go over the same spot twice (just normal blending) the roller is pulling the paint off -- or clumping it together -- not sure how to best describe it. It sometimes happens on the first roll, but usually it's on the second time over the same spot. We will be applying a second coat, but I am wondering what we can do to fix the spots that are still rough (sand?). Is there something we can do to prevent this happening again? What can be causing it? I'm going to attempt to attach 2 pictures Thank you very much for any advice. I don't think this project is EVER going to end -- or end well! IF all you have is one wall with drywall on it that is being a problem, then it is EASY to put up a thin layer of drywall over that and mud and tape the seams. Prime and you're ready for a smooth paint job. After all the work you've done to get smooth walls to paint, it seems to be a shame to give in now and go with a texture which will actually be more work than the overlay with drywall.

Fenway, the problem with the odors may have to do with the application of the shellac. How was it applied? Did you use two full coats of shellac before you painted? I don't think Gardz is meant to seal odors. It is great for a lot of problem surfaces but odor sealing is not one of them. That said, if you need it for sealing down wallpaper adhesive, etc., Menard's has it in the store, if you have a Menard's close by. (I've found that Gardz is great for sealing the gypsum in drywall in problem spots where the paper is torn away. It penetrates and hardens the gypsum so fresh mud has no problem sticking.)

Do you have any paint stores or hardware stores? Try those. I just used BIN primer and the smell wasn't too bad. For another project someone recommended Smart Prime. I haven't done it yet so can't comment on smell. I have used Gardz and it was stinky. I didn't think it did that good of a job. I thought we had scrubbed the walls pretty clean and then used the Gardz but still had some issues from the residual glue we didn't even see.

You really have to scrub the walls with a strong cleaner like spic and span, then rinse thoroughly. Then use any good sealer.

Then you did not get enough of it on the walls. I have used gallons upon gallons of Gardz and have never had any issues that I was aware of. Sometimes 2 coats are required.

Gardz is available at (or thru) most ACE retailers. We've stocked it for over a decade, & I'm way up in ND! If your store doesn't stock it, inquire if they can. The minimum store order is 1 case of 4 gallons. Small dealers may not wanna stock it....but they should!!! :-)
