Oh I feel your pain. What a mess that must be. Why don't you try putting it in the freezer for at least a couple of hours, then scraping it off. Hope this helps.

I'd burn it off. Make a fire oputside, perhaps in a charcoal grill if you have one and set the pan in there until all the plastic burns off.
The seasoning will burn off too, and you will have to re-season, but you will have saved the pan.

I would try both suggestions in this order:

1. freezing idea

2. burning it off in a grill or campfire

I would not recommend putting it in your oven on the self-cleaning cycle because of possible chemical fumes or fire potential from the plastic.

Hum...both suggestions came to mind...I think I'd first freeze it and get it off as much as possible. Then I'd melt off what's still there(on a burner) and keep scraping it with an old metal spatula until I got as much off as I can and then burn it off on an outdoor fire.

Burning or superheated plastic gives off toxic fumes....I would not try burning it off on a burner inside....take it outside!

Thanks for the tips. The skillet is going into the deep freeze ASAP, but I don't have a grill to try and burn the residue off. I guess I'll see if I can go to a friends and do it there. I really want to get this clean!

Good luck, Tracey. I'd also go with the freeze and scrape method first, then try the fire/grill method. I hope it's easier than I think it's going to be, but you can save it. Cast Iron is basically indestructible, as long as you don't put a hot pan into a bucket of cold water and crack it. Don't ask me how I know this.....

What about going to a welding place or something and maybe they can burn it off for you with one of those torches, but at a lower heat?

Ooohh, I think I know someone who can weld. Maybe he can hook me up :) Thanks for all the great ideas!

And Annie, I can see me doing something like putting a hot skillet into cold water to cool it off :)
