Who/what do you consider classic?

I am working on invitations to an annual dinner. It is a small affair---only about 10 people attend.

On the front, I am doing a collage of things that I consider CLASSIC. (Well, I should say "things that I think this group of mostly men consider classic...")

So far, I have come up with: John Wayne, Coke, the Beatles, Babe Ruth, Crown Royal, a smiley face, Remington ammunition, a 1957 Chevy, Elvis Presley, and a Harley Davidson logo.

What else would you include? ALL ideas greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Old Ford truck? The picture on Playboy of Marilyn Monroe (unless this is not the group for that) a pic of one of the presidents from that time, or even Adlilai (murdered the spelling) Stevenston, my mother always talked about him - or Nixon, pic of King Kong.

My perspective on house size is based on having lived in California most of my life where I've only once seen a house with a basement, not in other areas of the country where, if I understand correctly, basement area isn't generally counted in the square footage. Tiny: under 1000 sq ft Small: under 1500 sq ft Medium: 1500-2300 sq ft Large: above 2300 sq ft Too large to think about: above 4000 sq ft My son and daughter-in-law just bought a small house. They wanted 3 bedrooms and many of the houses in their price range were 900-1000 square feet. They were fortunate to find a house in good shape at 1300 sq feet and that extra 300 sq ft makes a big difference allowing a more workable kitchen size and public room space. Certainly layout of space makes a big difference too. There has been a trend to put in huge master suits with massive bathrooms. I've seen housed greater than 2000 sq ft with that, a good-sized public area, a tiny tiny kitchen area (called a "gourmet kitchen" on the listing) and 2 or 3 other tiny bedrooms. That really wouldn't work for us. When we bought our current house, we considered another house that was seductively beautiful. Fortunately we thought about it and realized that the layout of the beautiful house wouldn't work for the way we live - kitchen with no view of the back yard to keep an eye on the kids while cooking and family room far from the kitchen. Beautiful house was 400 sq ft larger than the ugly duckling house we bought, but almost all of the size difference was a 4' wide parquet hallway around a large central atrium. It was a lovely feature but also the main reason that living area was unworkable and not useable space, Ugly duckling house had the perfect layout marred by old carpets and poor choices in colors for wall coverings, carpets and window coverings. Those poor choices were replaced before we moved in. A good outdoor area can also make a home feel larger - especially in our climate.

From the people with hydronic in-floor I've talked to it will take about two days after starting the unit to get it to the desired heat range. But as far as day to nite to day heating goes there is little fluctuation in the heat because of the concrete slab being a heat-sink. You can turn down the flow meter or thermostat but the house won't cool off quickly. Although the house is small we set up four heat zones. The bedrooms have one each and have less tubing than the other areas. That allows us to keep them cooler than other areas. The baths are on a circuit so we can still heat their floors a bit if needed during our not so warm summers. Then the living/kitchen/processing areas are on one. I've had no personal experience with these so it's going to be a learning process. Our contractor doesn't like to use thermostats for hydronic and uses flow valves instead. His other clients with this system told us that they have to adjust the flow valves about 3x/yr for seasonal weather changes. Below is a photo of the roughed in manifold. Heated water is from a Munchkin boiler. I think electric would be easier for remodels or for doing single rooms as baths. I don't know if it would be approved for use in shower floors though. Tom

The value of the home will dictate the value of the flooring you put in. It is entirely possible to get a decent laminate in a classic hardwood look into a home that has a value of $150K. That same home would not hold the value of $10K hardwood install because the home's value will only be $150K. A higher end home can handle a higher end floor. Without knowing the value of your 'flip', it is hard to say what a classic floor would look like in a home without a face...or price point.

What do you consider "too cold"?

Last week, 42F and raining was too cold - I was huddled under 2 throws. This week, I am well into my winter acclimation and I am fine with 30F. I keep the house thermostat at 63-64 in the daytime, and 58 at night. Of course this involves wearing fleece pants and warm sweaters, maybe even my silk long underwear. For my outdoor walks, by January I am good with 15F (or even a bit lower if the sun is bright) thanks to a great warm coat, neck gaiter, double layer wool in my gloves and hat, and good boots. ETA: Martha Scott, when I was living in San Diego I wore my heavy winter coat in the mornings when it was around 40F! I still have that coat (30 years later, it is now my "barn coat") and it is the second warmest coat I have, next to the one mentioned above. I would love to find another like it. Oi, Maifleur, I remember shivering in my skirt at the bus stop as a child. Finally starting wearing a pair of pants under the skirt, which I had to take off once I got to school.

Marilyn is a good one! I've also added the map from the old Bonanza series and a Farmall tractor. I may swap the 57 Chevy for a Mustang... and it's funny you mentioned Gone With The Wind! I thought of that yesterday and forgot about it (no PostIt notes handy at the time--LOL!).

How about a music collection....photos of a 78's, 33 1/3; 45's, 8-track; cassette, CD's. No IPods because they are not classics yet.

Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers? Full Service gas stations? Old High School yearbook photos of girls with pixie collars, pearls and a circle pin? Guys with sideburns or slicked-down hair? Old travel posters with passengers dressed to the nines, flying on prop planes? 'Malt Shoppe' jukeboxes?

This sort of depends on the era you want to evoke. The Parthenon is classic, but that's not what you're looking for.
