Am I watering too much
Comments (9)In the areas where the sod looks stressed, lift up a few pieces of sod and see if it is moist/wet underneath. If it is, then the sod is getting enough water. If not, then the sod needs more water. Your watering schedule should remain as is until you can no longer lift up the pieces of sod. This means the roots are establishing and taking hold. After the roots start establishing, then you can back off the watering schedule to once a day, then gradually reduce the watering schedule until you only need to water about once per week. This gradual reduction in watering should take about 4 - 6 weeks. Continue to take pictures in 1 week intervals so you can see the progress that the bermuda is making. No, the bermuda is not dead....See MoreMulch & too much rain = mold? Do I need to replace
Comments (9)It sounds like a slime mold. If that is true, it is ugly but not harmful. I have heard that cocoa mulches get it a lot, which is one to several reasons I don't use cocoa mulch. (The other reasons are that it is expensive rather than free; that it smells like food, not like a garden; and finally that it has the potential to be toxic to my dog. She'll eat anything.) As for mulch depth and turning old mulch into the soil, I used to hear that advice but haven't recently, and don't do either of those things myself. I use a deeper mulch, probably around 4 inches, at least if you count the depth of the compost plus the depth of the wood chip mulch on top of that together. And soil experts these days say that it is better for the structure of the soil when microorganisms to work the compost down into the soil instead of you digging it in. In fact, they say to dig as little as possible. A really good book to read about all of this is Teaming with Microbes: A Gardener's Guide to the Soil Food Web by Jeff Lowenfels. It is a fascinating book, and very informative. Best of all, you don't need to be a scientist to enjoy it. Comments (21)I agree with the above, this is a wrap-around casing and all you need is 2 pieces to make it right. The tile guy screwed this up by cutting to high. All he had to do is use a scrap of tile, scribe it and cut a straight line like an example, especially today not many use saws anymore to make this cuts everyone has a multi-tool and to make this cuts is a breeze. Ask your trim guy to replace it, not a big deal and it will take 10 min to make it right. That being said, this is a fireplace and I assume this is a focal point in that room, I doubt you want to use Bondo or some other filler to patch the void, it will not look good....See MoreAm I expecting too much from landscaper?
Comments (31)couple things: 1 - it may sound odd coming from a landscape designer who does scaled plans for everything from a $2000, one day job to a six figure install, but I'm going to have to pump the brakes on the whole notion that one "should" get a detailed drawing, planset, whatever, just based on project size. If one has paid for a scaled, detailed drawing of the area to be designed, then that's what's owed. Otherwise it comes down to whatever documentation makes it clear what work is being performed, who is providing what, what constitutes a completed project, and what makes all parties comfortable. The creation of a landscape master plan is a skill and a service in and of itself. Not every landscape installer is a landscape designer. If no plan is a dealbreaker, step one is hiring someone for the plan. 2 - it's June 1 in what has been, for us and all our colleagues, a banner year. I'd follow up with them if you're serious about going with them. They're probably working 90-100 hours a week like the rest of us are right now. 3 - I agree w/ Embothrium that summer's not the greatest time for planting jobs. We'll only plant in June if there's irrigation, and we generally try to only do hardscapes in July and August. Not sure I agree with their thing about spring planting though, but I'm sure that's a discussion for another day. At this point, I'd say don't rush into anything just to get it done. If you have the confidence in this new team that you described, ping them so they know you're still very interested, and see what they come up with....See Morespitfire_01
