Best ride-on toy?

My nephew will be 1 in December and my mom (his grandma) wants to get him a little trike or similar toy for Christmas or his birthday (also in December). He is already walking (and running), and jumping so he is a little ahead though he is not big for his age. I saw the Fisher-Price 'Ready Steady Ride-on' but read a few reviews saying it isn't steady, but many other reviews saying that kids love it.

I'm wondering what your kids' (and yours) favorite ride-on (or ride in) toys are. I don't think he's ready to push pedals but he is very active, can climb a slide by himself, etc. Something safe, durable and fun.

A Wagon is great!!! I got a bunch of toys to help my daughter walk (you know push toys etc.) and she hardly plays with them because she can walk on her own now! My brother did get her a "big girl bike" which she is way to little for, but she loves to sit on it and have us push her around.
Go for the wagon!

My 2 year old son loves his "Cozy Coupe" (a red and yellow car). My 1 1/2 yr old daughter loves it too. That's all they play with outside, but now that it's getting cold here in NJ, I will clean it off and bring it in. No pedals and it's easy to get in and out of. You also don't have to worry about it tipping over and stuff either. It's great. It's a saving grace for me.LOL

Must of been lucky. Bought an MTD at Ace hardware (Ace Special Edition) with a 42" cut and 16hp Tecumseh. Aside from the normal problems of your MTD of that era IE having the grille mounts break off after a few years) it's been great, and it was only replaced as it was really starting to not work well on hills, and in the last year has been a case of "What's going to break next when I mow?". A key to remember is any NEW tractor in that range is going to be light duty. If you have more an acre to mow with it, a newer, higher end, used model is a probably a better option. You'll get a lot of life out of one though if you keep it well maintained. Take care of it and there is no reason why you should not get a good, usable life of about 10-12 years. one other thing to keep in mind; the chief complaints of many people on a mower it seems is the motor. That is the most important part of a mower besides the transmission on a Hydro equipped tractor. The engine is going to what will go wrong 9 time out of 10 on a mower, and is often going to be to blame for issues with cutting (due to lack of power) and reliability.

gnomad, many of us are hesitant to jump in when a question like this is asked; it's the Chevrolet-vs-Ford question. The best lawn equipment, generally speaking, is the commercial-grade stuff (read high-dollar). For example, the Kubota line is excellent ... but this is equipment that is considerably more expensive than the consumer-grade mowers. I'll go out on that limb, but keep in mind that this is just one guy's opinion. One of the top RIDING MOWERS (which is how your question is stated) is the Snapper rear-engine rider - this is NOT a lawn tractor, but is a tried-and-true piece of equipment that, with care, can easily last for 20 years or more (I know, because my Mother had one that was used and abused for more than 25 years, and I know of others with similar longevity.) If you're buying a NEW lawn tractor for under $1,000 my thought would be to get a Craftsman on sale ... the Craftsman lawn tractors are made by Husqvarna, and tend to be pretty good. My father-in-law has one of the cheap Craftsmans that is over 15 years old (although it was probably made by MTD), and still works fine. THE KEY IS PROPER MAINTENANCE. In the over-$1,000 up to $2,500 range, the Cub Cadets, John Deere, Husqvarna, and Craftsmans are pretty sturdy lawn tractors. Starting around $2,000 you can get a garden tractor in the Husqvarna/Craftsman lines, which gets you something that can handle ground-engaging equipment. Personally, I buy used stuff ... safe, if you know how to check stuff out. Again, proper maintenance plays a tremendously important role in longevity. I have no problem with the Consumers Reports recommendations, but they do not consider longevity in their ratings. All they look at is the performance of new machines ... keep in mind that even a Yugo automobile, when new, ran okay. All right, now I'm ready for the chorus of boo's.

I agree with you 100% I have a 60" deck on my JD650 and it just goes right along...the only thing I wish is that I could mow faster without it tossing me off.

There are a lot of riding toys out there. We bought our grandson a riding car for his first birthday last December. He loves cars. It has been a favorite. We got it at Toys R Us. It is plastic, has a steering wheel and red squeaky beep horn, and it has a tall, orange plastic "railing" attached to the rear with a stabelizing design. So it can be used to practice standing and walking and is real sturdy so that it won't fall or tip. When he was learning to walk, he would take it on walks around the block with me and trundle along holding on to the "railing." The blue seat is a lid that lifts easily to a stash compartment. It has a telephone and little dials and balls that twirl. It was a no-name car, but I liked it for its stability, sturdiness, and lack of computerized gee gaws. It was $20 or $30 I think.

I have 3 kids and my oldest (age 7) was given a Cozy Coupe when he was around 1. Well-we still have the toy. Our 5 yo loved it until he was to big and now my 2 yo loves it. It is a great value as far as toys go. There aren't that many things (the Brio trains are the only others I can think of) that we are still using 6 years after we got it.

Go for simplicity! At the young age of only 1...though he may be walking, running, jumping,,it is best to give him the chance to CONTINUE building his motor skills, both large and small...non motorized are best, aim for ride on toys that require him to push himself, etc..
Little Tikes makes a GREAT simple ride on toy, selling for about $20-no pedals, push only..Our son LOVES it! He now also has the Police Car version of the COzy Coupe..and spends HOURS pushing it around the house!

I have Fisher-Price's rock, roll and ride. I love it because when DD scoots too far away from me, I can push her back easily with the handle. My DD likes it so much she often wants to bring it inside, which we sometimes allow because we can set it up as a "rocker". It is a good beginner trike. When she is a little older we will move on to more sophisticated machinery, but for now, this works for us. DD is 16 mo, but we have used it since she was 12 mo.

Smaller scooters with lower power output (100W-350W) are great toys for children who wear proper safety gear and are responsible enough to know how and where to operate their scooter. Electric scooters are simple, so you donÃ¯Â¿Â½t have to know how to adjust your carburetor like you would with a gas scooter, and they are also quiet so your neighbors wonÃ¯Â¿Â½t complain. One downside of electric scooters for kids is the battery will always run out of juice before the kid does.

Our 1 year-old boys have a ride-on car that shoots balls out. They put the ball in and pull a handle to shoot it out. They enjoy it, but they much prefer this y-bike. I think it is easier to maneuver and they can get more speed with it- especially on our Pergo hallway. Highly recommend.
