Jasc Paintshop Pro 9 Question

When I go to save a picture from PSP, it always wants to save it to some funky file that nobody can ever locate. That means if I'm saving 10 pictures and I'm going through five steps (layers of folders) to save each one, it takes me 50 steps to do it. This seriously impinges on my good disposition.

Does anyone know of a way to fix it so it's not that way? At least once I designate where the first pic goes I'd like it to take that as the default for the session.

Also, does anyone know how to find those files it wants to save things to? I can see I've boobooed and stored a lot of pics in there. I've noted the name of the file and done a search for it and nothing comes up.

I don't have PSP, but did you try doing a file search for the file extension to see where the lost files are? *.psp or whatever it is.

Don't they always go to the same folder that you're wanting to not be your default save folder?

Look under the options area of the software for defaults that can be changed.

Where they are located may tell you lots. When you do the search for *.png, you have the details view option to see where they are - what directory/folder they are in. You can delete the whole folder(s), which is faster and less draining on system resources than mass deleting lots of files. As already mentioned, some might be associated with other programs so be careful. Because you don't recognize the images does not mean you don't want to keep them. I find 453 png files doing a search. While most are associated with Jasc (including plugins) or other image editing and video programs, a few are part of my Service Pack files, some are from my DVD burning software, and many are in the System32 directory (associated with DirectX, which you want on your computer). I wouldn't touch any of them. Because you don't want Jasc or Corel on your computer, only remove the ones associated with the programs you don't want or already deleted. I doubt they mysteriously appeared as in you or someone else downloaded png files by accident. You did it when installing programs and downloading programs and other necessities. Also, it might ease your mind a little to know png files are not normally very big. PNG format was designed to be able to display millions of colors (almost limitless) while being better compressed than JPG format, which is already considered to be well compressed with no loss of color. I realize 39,000 is a lot, but most of mine are only 1kb. If we assumed all of yours are only 1kb, that only amounts to just about 40mg, which is very little compared to 120gig hard drive. Adding the unlikelihood they are all just 1kb, I still doubt they collectively amount to 100mg, which is still very little consumed space.

Susie, I have searched & can't find any Avast on it. I also went into the folders. I just did a search on this one & there is quite a bit Norton leftover on it still. AVG is on too & was working when I stopped using this one. I hope to have another one Monday if everyone would just get well..I don't drive (never learned) & all my rides are truly sick. Cat, I think I will try the XP tonite. I do know it has a LOT of problems & need to be started over..it is not worth spending $150 to do that. Nite before last I was trying to fill out a form to order something.. it took over 30 minutes to do it.. The cursor kept freezing plus it wouldn't scroll without freezing. Some on here can vouch for all the problems I have had. If I can get it running I can at least check to see if there is anything else I want saved. I tried to keep things saved as I knew this day was coming. Yes I know now the APC is probably why it wouldn't turn on but I don't think that had anything to do with the other problems. The XP took about 20 minutes to reboot.. this 98 is very fast doing it. Thanks, Dar

Anele, thanks, you should try it! Dlm, I think even the samples they show and photograph in the store are awful looking. You need to play with it a bit I think, to make it look more authentic. Blending 2-3 colors helps. Also, don't over-blend/stir it once you've applied it. You want it to dry smoother. Creekylis, go for it! You can do color, or it would even look good in crystal clear, which is easy to do, and you could imbed in crystal clear jewels, too. On my son's window the center section is clear -- and you can see shadow/form through it, but not detail. It still lets in all the light, of course.

I find Adobe products in general are very difficult to use...not intuitive at all. I'm a nurse...16 years in ICU using all sorts of monitors and equipment, so I don't consider myself a total dummy. I have been involved in Telephone Nursing for the past 16 years and have learned many programs to manage patient care and also to manage employees and projects. Everything I have learned has been in the office setting by osmosis or taught myself. I'm not an expert by any means, but I can catch on to programs and even write technical curriculum as needed...but Adobe...YIKES...it makes me crazy. I just had to learn a new program out of the Adobe Premier Pro CS3 over the last 2 days within a couple of hours. I built myself a guide with screenshots, but need to practice some more. Maybe after I get better with this video adaption program I will be able to use more elements in Photoshop...but I am a total hack in that program. I wish I had someone at home to show me how to use all these programs...I would be sooooo happy. But I can CROP damitall!!! LOL

I'm running an older version of PSP. (SQH is correct, the default file extension that PaintShopPro assigns is ".PSP", unless you change that to "JPEG" yourself.)

If I'm working on a room, say adding a layer of wall color, then a comforter, then drapes, I'll save it as both .jpg and .psp files. Anything saved as .jpg is "flattened", in that all the layers are merged, so you won't be able to go in later and tweak your individual layers. It's necessary to save in .jpg so others can see it (universal format), but if you want to go back and do more tweaking it's best to save it also in .psp format, so layers aren't flattened and you can still go back and maneuver them if need be.

Anyway, do a file search of your system for .PSP files and they should turn up. (If you've never searched your system go to Start>Search>Files and Folders and then put .PSP in the search box.)

I'm confused tho. Are you saying, by default, PSP wants to save your files to a location that you don't use and don't specify? My version doesn't do that. It saves them where I designate. Last location I saved a photo will be first location a subsequent photo is directed to be saved, but if I don't want it in that folder I just maneuver to where I do want to save it.

Um... I have some .psp files here and there, but that's not what I'm saying -- I'm not talking about the extension on the file.

If I'm on a web browser and I start saving pictures to > Pictures> My Pictures> Decor> Curtains... once I've saved one there, all the pictures I save automatically go there until I tell it to go somewhere different, or close that browser.

If I'm in Word, same thing -- if I'm saving to Documents then the next thing I save will go to Documents unless I change it.

If I have a browser open and I drag a photo off it into my open PSP, when I go to save it, it brings up some weird temp file -- the name of the file seems to always be different. Okay, fine. I select the path for where I want it to save. When I go to save the next one, it does the same thing again and I have to pick out the whole path. Next one, same thing.

So is there a way to tell it to always save things to my Pictures folder, for instance? Or to get it to automagically save to where you last saved? Or what's with the weirdo files it gives me? I can see pictures in them. So I wrote down the name of one such folder and did a search for it and nada.

Does that make any sense?
