Brenda....what is the marking on the back? and how big are the spoons...more to the point how much do they weigh. If they are sterling and tea spoon size, they are worth about $15 to $30 each depending on the desirability of the pattern. If they are serving spoon size, they may be worth as much as $60 each....again dependingon the weight. If they are plated, they may be worth $1 to $5 each...again depending on the desirability of the pattern. What is the mark on the back? and how long are they.

From what you're describing, I suspect the hard water is to blame. Phosphates used to work really well, but wreaked havoc on the environment. We already have enough problems with run off into the Pacific; don't need to add even more fertilizer. These days, dishwashing detergents rely on enzymes to break down food residue, and rely on small amounts of surfactants (i.e. soap) to rinse things off. That can work even better than the old type of detergent. But it generally isn't as effective the harder the water is. You probably notice that when showing too. You need more soap to wash, and then when you rinse the soap doesn't really want to come off. I live in a part of the Bay Area that is fortunate enough to get Hetch Hetchy water. So, our water is exceptionally soft. That would explain the different experiences. If you don't want to move a few miles North, your best bet is getting a water softener. Alternatively, keep experimenting with different detergents. Maybe you'll find one that works better in your situation. And definitely make sure to use rinse aid. With hard water you have to. It's the same problem as with showering. The water can't wash off everything. And in the case of a dishwasher, this is water that still has some food particles. So, you'll see residue when things dry

LOL, what have you done to me!?! I love kitchen gadgets just as long as I know I'll be using it. So, when I saw your question/thread, I went shopping for one. It would help me when making rice porridge. As a habit, when I shop for something, I open up my mind and do quite a bit of research before buying the product. We have a grapefruit tree so we have grapefruit spoons. The bowls are serrated all around. As well we have a which I wouldn't be without because the twin blades of one end fit on either side of the membrane between sections, separating them nicely. If the sections of a halved grapefruit have been cleanly cut by the knife, then the serrated spoons aren't necessary but I like to use them just the same in case there's a section that's still attached. Otherwise we eat grapefruits cut in halves or quarters out of hand, like oranges. I don't think grapefruit spoons are out of fashion though. I think it just depends on how often you want to eat a halved grapefruit cut into sections. The spoons make it easier to handle. SharonCb
