Can't decide between Bosch and KA Dishwasher
Comments (15)Besides what everybody else has already said, here are a couple of other thoughts. Consumer Reports testing lists the Bosch SHX555 as having "excellent" ratings for washing and energy use, and "very good" ratings for noise and what CR thinks is "ease of use." There are ratings for KichenAid KUDS30 models, but no KUDS35 models. It may well be that the only difference between the "30" and "35" models is which retailers sell them. Anyway, the KUDS30 models were rated as excellent for washing, very good for energy use, average for noice, and very good for ease of use. CR lists the Bosch as having a 110 minute cycle time and the KA KUDS30 models as having a 115 minute cycle time. My Bosch SHE55 was similarly rated by CR but, in practice, usually runs about 100 minutes. (Both the KA and Bosch seem to have sensors that adjust cycle time for water turbidity, so YMMV). My SHE55 model, which I've had for 8 months, has racks that are designed differently that the ones on the Bosch I had for the previous fifteen years. The racks in the SHE55 (and, I believe in the SHX55) models have a different layout from the old Bosch, although they also have adjustable height and rows of tines that can fold down. Not everybody likes this layout. It took me some time adjust I saved the racks from my old Bosch and, once in a while, I sometimes swap in the old bottom rack for a particular load. IIRC, the current KA models use a more standard rack design, albeit with some flexibility. So, one thing I would suggest for the OP is, if you are still stuck in the making your decision, go back to the store with some of your plates and glasses to see how yours will fit. One final thing. There is a strident debate about the safety of some Whirlpool dishwasher products, which includes it's KitchenAid models. There are reports of a small number of them suffering circuit board burn-outs with some those even catching fire. Apparently, there have been several housefires attributed to the DWs. Whirlpool has denied any product defects, while numbers of enraged owners are lobbying the CPSC and blogging, and newspapers have been publishing some stories. Do a web search using "kitchenaid + dishwasher + fire" for more info on this debate. Also try substituting "whirlpool" for "kitchenaid." There were a couple threads here at GW on the subject last summer and fall, as well. I remember one of them was about whether to let your dishwasher run when you are sleeping or going out for the day. Comments (31)My knives cut raw chicken, raw pork, raw beef. I want them to be clean. Dishwasher. Knives are expendable supplies. If they need sharpened I sharpen them. If they need replaced I replace them. Getting a little more life from knives that will last 5 to 10 years is not a good trade-off vis-a-vis bacteria growing on the blade or hilt that gets transferred to our food. First, dishwashers make things no more sanitary than does hand washing. In fact, home dishwashers (unlike commercial ones) contain NO sanitizing agent, so a DW is really no more sanitary than is hand washing, unless you use water at 180 F or higher. The Food Safety Code allows either type of washing to be used for any type of dishes, or tool. If you want to sanitize your knives, after washing, dip them in a container that contains one cap (yes, cap, NOT cup) full of standard, plain bleach in a gallon of cold water. One minute in this solution will sanitize your knives. This solution must be made fresh daily, as the Chlorine dissipates over time. Yes, knives can easily be replaced, but why waste money? Several knives in my house are 40+ years old, and almost all are 20+ years old. As edlakin says, most cooks use one knife for everything. After cutting up some chickens, they (we) wash their knives, dry them, and store them. This storing dry helps kill bacteria by desiccation. After the chicken are cooked, they (we) use the same knife to cut the chicken into portions. Happens millions of time per day, and I don't see people keeling over in the streets daily from food borne illnesses. So relax a little, and treat your knives to hand washing. They will thank you....See MoreCan't clean old leaf pattern china
Comments (2)Hall, autumn leaf is yellowish...I don't think they are going to come any cleaner if you are washing them well. I suppose you could put them in the dishwasher...but I would not use regular dish soap....and I would not use the dry cycle not the water heater feature. If you really think the dish washer will clean them...put a handful of baking sode in with the dishes, or 1/2 cup white vinegar. But I really think you will get them cleaner in the sink with a little dawn. Linda C Here is a link that might be useful:...See MoreWhat cleaning products can't you live without?
Comments (23)My newest discovery is FW1 Racing Formula Cleaning Wax. It's made for waterless car cleaning (and does a bang-up job there), but can be used on just about any non-porous surface. I use it to take the soap scum off my shower tiles and glass doors. It's AMAZING and it helps keep fingerprints and new gunk from sticking. The only thing you have to watch out for is to not get it on the floor of the shower, you don't want to slip. They were doing a demo at a gas station and I bought three cans for $30. The website price is $20 a can, so it's pricey. But if you ever see someone offering it at the gas station, try it! Because it's so pricey, for regular window and mirror cleaning I use Invisible Glass with a microfiber cloth. Totally streak-free sparkling clean with very little effort!...See Moredadoes
