delayed teething?

Hi, all -

My DS is 14 months old and his teeth are nowhere in sight. Anyone else experience delayed teething? Otherwise he seems to be developmentally okay. Walking, eating, speaking a few words etc. Just wondering...

If he is, and has been healthy, there is nothing to worry about. It is not at all unusual for a child not to get the first tooth until 12 months, so your son may be just a little late. It also means that he probably will be later getting his perminant teeth. They will all probably come in at a more rapid rate when they do start.

However, to ease your mind, check with his doctor.

Thanks PB. Yes, I checked with his doctor (on phone) yesterday and he said not to worry. We will be seeing him in person soon for DS's 15 month appointment.

It is so very frustrating, isn't it? My kitchen took 9 months from demolition to completion (well, we still have a punch list of stuff, but no one has been here since before Thanksgiving, not pushing because completion of punch list means last payment). I was assured it would be done in the spring, and then certainly by July 4th, and then I realized I'd better cancel the party I had planned for my husband's birthday in August. When my mother said that I would be lucky to have it done in time for Thanksgiving, I laughed, but she was right. We had a major mistake midway that required a big redesign, and some brand new cabinets to wait endlessly for. Weeks where no one came, vacations that interfered with the job, a million little problems that added up to big delays. But you know what? I had a party on Sunday. Late Saturday night after I finished cleaning my kitchen to perfect, I sat staring at it, and I love it. All the bad times are just a funny story to tell. I was discussing the whole process with some women, and we decided renovations are like pregnancy. It feels absolutely endless while you are in the middle of it, and it is so unpleasant and painful at times. You swear you will never do it again, and you'll never get over how much harder it was than you thought. But then when it is done, you forget all the pain and agony, and just marvel at your creation. My advice? Vent like crazy here. Read stories about people's much worse experiences to make yourself feel better. Remain calm, and realize that just about any problem can be fixed, and human beings make mistakes. And as my mother likes to say "this too shall pass." And in the end, it will all work out, and you'll be thrilled with the end result. It really is worth the wait.

I have had and am now having major dental work. The dentist that I went to for years and really liked retired about 7 years ago. I was switched to another dentist who practiced in the same office. I have had some major work done by this dentist and almost every time I leave his office, I am black and blue and in severe pain. One time I ended up with over $800 in medical bills. The dentist gave me a hematoma which ended up getting infected, I had major swelling of my glands and a lot of pain. I went to a medical doctor and got penicillin and they referred me to a cardiologist who did an echocardiogram. I have a heart murmur and have to take antibiotics before having any work done on my teeth. Because of the severe infection, I was referred to a cardiologist to make sure no damage had been done. I am now having a bridge replaced and had a tooth pulled this week. I am having problems and the dentist looked at it again today and said I have a severe bruise on my gum and it is swollen but it should heal without further antibiotics. Last summer I had a crown done on a molar and ended up with two weeks of severe pain and had to exist on a pain reliever. My point in all of this is that I have always been afraid to go to a dental school and have students working on me since I have had so many problems with an experienced dentist working on me. If he can't do it without me ending up in severe pain and bruises, hematomas, and other problems, would a student do a better job?

Oh man. My house is a toothless wonder. I have built and must paint 102 linear feet of cabinetry. I have a grill I bought 3 years ago in November, still in the box on my living room floor. I have the cardboard on the floors to protect them from the drywall finishing that should have been done 10 months ago. ($$) I have unusual circumstances, but I know exactly what you mean by one little thing changing everything. I had primed 16' of cabinet doors but hadn't put on any paint. I go SO SICK of looking at all the CRAP I was sticking in the open cabinets I put them on just primed. The peace it gave my eyes was astonishing. I've finally given them their 1st coat ... without taking them back down. I have a habit of sitting and staring at something I'm making, seeing it finished in my noggin. Then I'll build something and sit and stare at how great it looks. I can't imagine having all the walls up, finished, primed and painted, then with all the electricity finished AND moulding and trim installed. I won't know what to do with myself!

Hi Stacy, well now at least you have a goal to work towards. Things are going to go wrong throughout the project, there will probably be some delays, my best advice is to have an exception that you won't be done by the earliest time they quoted you, then you will be pleasantly surprised that it went better than expected. The most important thing is that your contractor takes care of things properly and keeps you informed. My recent kitchen project was my first home improvement project where I was actually around a good deal of the time they were working. I will tell you that I found excuses to go out even if I really had nothing to do because I couldn't bear watching and wondering if everything was going to come together. Overhearing them grumble when something went wrong sent me into a panic, so I headed for the hills! Your contractor should be licensed and bonded, so giving them a key should be no big issue. My project manager specifically scheduled himself to be there when any sub contractor was going to be there, so they would not need to be given a key. And my tip for surviving without my kitchen, I found the biggest inconvenience was not having a sink. I could grill, cook in my Breville oven, make coffee etc. Second was ice once they disconnected my fridge (which they kindly waited for the last possible moment to do) I totally banned everyone in my house from using real dishes or glasses, even mostly silverware. I kept one fork, knife for each of us in case we needed something sturdier. and made everyone wash their own. We had sturdy paper plates, bowls etc. I had to grit my teeth and kind of give up on recycling to avoid washing things out. I made things that required little prep: grilled chicken or steak with baked potato, microwaved or grilled corn or salad in the bag. I bought preprepared food that I just had to heat up. It wasn't the best of kitchens, but it worked, reduced my stress and made the day my sink was installed the happiest day ever! Try to relax and enjoy coming home every day to see what new has been accomplished. Good luck!

Getting teeth late is a slight problem because it can limit what they can eat/chew. But, it usually is good because they are later getting their permanent teeth and therefore are more responsible for caring for them. I think dentists begin to worry if they haven't gotten them by 16-18 months. My children were both over 12 months when they got their first teeth. My 6 1/2 year old has only lost 2 teeth and doesn't even have any more loose ones. Your dentist can do a quick x-ray to make sure they are coming in. Our dentist is a very close family friend and heard frequently from me that my son had no teeth yet. When he finally did get his first tooth, I printed up a birth announcement and sent it to the dental office. It said something like "John Joseph Smith, along with his parents Susan and Tom Smith are proud to announce the erruption of his first tooth, a bottom left front tooth on December 10 at 8am. No gifts please." I did it in fancy type and on the stationary that I used for birth announcements. The office loved it and said it was the first time anyone had received an announcement for a tooth.

LOL! The announcement is so cute :) I don't think I have bothered our doctor enough to send a similar one out to him, but most certainly my friends and family are going to get one for the countless emails I have sent them on this subject!!! Thanks much. Also, I am fortunate in that DS is not too fussy about the food either...he softens whatever the food is with his gums and then eats it. He loves different foods, especially when it is either in the hands of another kid in his playgroup or on the floor :)
