Question about nurses..

Are nurses required to sign some sort of oath where they promise to "do good and not do any harm" (sorry, I don't know the wording) like doctors do?

I took that Nightengale pledge when I graduated in 1968. I don't know if that is still a practice today or not. It really doesn't hold any legal or binding power. Some of the language is obviously rather antiquated, while the concept itself remains valid.

But more importantly there are in each of the 50 states (I don't know about Canada) State Boards of Nursing. They are the licensing body & they exist solely to enforce the law and rules regulating practice. They "protect the public".

If your are having an "issue" with a nurse or nurses I would suggest that you first speak to the Nurse Manager. If that is unsatisfactory, go up the chain of command, to the Director, Vice President of Nursing, & if necessary the CEO of the facility. If that fails, file a complaint with the State Board (or the equivalent in your country).

For us, my sons assets could not be more than $2000. Medicare paid the first 100 days after the initial 3 day hospitalization, and then Medicaid picked it up. There are still some charges that mMedicare pay for but mostly it is Medicaid. Because we are now legally his guardians, we have two accountings to do each year, one for the state, and one for the courts because he is an incapacitated person. These accountings are very thorough, and included copies of all bank and tax records. Thwere are some very nice options if full time skilled nursing is not required. Our son spent time in a family home, that was wonderful. They were a large family and had three paying residents. Unfortunately he got sick and there was fear, he was ocntagious so we placed him in the nursing home. All nursing homes are not the same. Your friend or an agent looking out for her, needs to check the facility out by being there at meals, when they first get the day started, and times when there should be some activities available. If they don't allow you to check it out, cross it off your list. Check the kitchen and the foods served. Do they have a choice of foods? So much to check, but someone needs to be an advocte for her. Residents are so vulnerable, and if it turns out to be a bad situation, it can be overwhelming for her. An advocate can make sure it is going as smooth as possible. Never assume anything either. It's one thing to make brownies, but gifts put the staff in an difficult position. Hospitals generally have strict rules that any staff are not to accept gifts or money from patients or families, and can get into serious trouble if they do. While you are certainly grateful for the wonderful care your mother got, the staff (who are all highly trained professionals) are doing what they are paid to do and shouldn't be tipped (which is what you gave them). A heartfelt thank you is more than enough. Bringing in baked goods is better, since all the staff can enjoy them.

I haven't tandem nursed...and, my almost 20 month old just weaned about 3 weeks ago... But, my thought is much like the above poster said...she's getting the "power" stuff for the new baby too...It should, I assume all balance out soon enough...I'm thinking that your body is still working on who's nursing when type thing...My guy was only nursing 1 maybe 2x in a 24 hour period the last few months prior to his stopping. Are you basically nursing new baby before big sister? Maybe big sister is actually get the "hind" milk from baby? I don't have a clue...just trying to think a few things through... Good luck...I hate "blow outs" too! :o)

We have them and they're supposed to be used to see if we're in a patient's room so there are fewer over head pages (noise on the unit). Unfortunately, they don't use them like they're supposed to be used. I get a hundred freaking phone calls/and or overhead pages a day...like today. I can be in the room and they still call me or call out over the intercom when I don't answer my phone because I'm gowned and gloved in an isolation room. I was so happy when my phone battery died around 6 pm tonight. What really annoys me the most is when you just left a patient's room after making sure they don't need anything and they call you back for something. You're busy with another patient and they expect you to drop everything and run back to their room NOW. If you can't go right NOW they call over and over and over again. To make matters worse we are having to take groups of patients on a certain team now so that the doctors can round with us every morning...which they aren't doing. So, for the past few days I've had patients all over the unit, so we're running our @sses off even more than usual. My legs and back are killing me. Sorry, I know that's more than you were asking.

Thank you. I spoke to a supervisor and I think it will be resolved. I should say that all other nurses except this one have been fantastic. If this one took an oath, I think she had her fingers crossed behind her back when she did it.

Unfortunately an oath or pledge is only as good as the person taking it.......if they are honorable then it may make a difference but for some.......it won't matter at all. Glad you are getting it resolved.........

Hi Ruthie. I'm doing really well. I have more energy every day, and my surgical pains are healing- also where my head was clamped. I have some problems, but I am really happy to report that the head pains I used to get all the time are gone now! Thanks for asking :)

Glad you got a chance to speak to the supervisor. She will evaluate the complaint and decide how best to handle your complaint. You may or may not hear anything further. Depending on the situation, the complaint could be passed on to the College of Nurses investigative committee. Many issues are resolved at this level. If warranted, it could be sent to the disciplinary committee for further action. You could also contact the Colleges of Nurses directly to initate a formal complaint. If you decide to go this route, I would document everything said by everyone involved while it is still fresh in your mind.
