question: Can you make baked goods for the nursing staff

at a hospital on a surgical floor as a thank you? We've given the ICU and surgical floor nurses bath and body works goodies to say thank you for taking care of Mom but I thought I would make a big ole tray of brownies next time I went as a little treat. Do you think that would be ok or would they not be able to have them because they're homemade? Anyone know if it's ok or a no-no?

Mom is still there [ 3 wks 4 days now] but hoping to move forward to a rehab facility [hopefully] later this week. And she told me to say thank you to all of you for your prayers and positive thoughts, she's sure it's made a big impact on her progress. :) She wants to be home soon like Lee :)

Absolutely --- They will love it! Just make sure you time it so that your favorite nurse/nurses are there when you bring them, or they will all be eaten before they get to work.

I might consider sending 2 batches...for different shifts.
I have often heard the nurses and aides complaining that all the goodies were eaten by the previous shift!

I didn't meant to sound harsh and in re-reading my post and I can see where I did...so I'm sorry. In my nursing home..yes...we all accommodate tours at all times...pop-ins and all...but I also can't tell you how many times people have dropped in and demanded a tour right away...sometimes this does a dis-service to the tour-ee. In other words, if a member of the admissions department or social work department aren't available they are accommodated by members of different departments who often aren't able to answer the questions they may have nor give them any advice. They can end up walking away with incomplete information which can be quite frustrating. It is a fact of life, however, and we (meanng Nursing Home staff) are used to it but it can be a bit frustrating for us sometimes. In a perfect world everyone would make an appointment...but it certainly isn't a perfect world so that's ok. As for the discharge planner giving you that advice...it's common practice. And again, that's ok, too...it says to do that in all of the literature on "how to pick a nursing home", etc. but it's still, in my opinion, not necessarily the best way to go. And although you raise very good points, Fairegold I still strongly disagree about having individuals tour independently without escort. It's a HIPPA issue...a security issue...and a dignity issue. If your loved one was living in a nursing home would you want some crazy person wandering around un-escorted? You never know who can wander in looking around. And although I agree residents LOVE visitors it is the nursing home's responsibility to maintain their safety, privacy, and dignity. Susan, I'm so sorry to hear about your husband. I would suggest food as a good choice -- perhaps send a nice basket with chocolates, fruit, etc. And by all means, send personal notes. I finally sent a note to one aide who had taken wonderful care of my mother. I couldn't do it until nearly a year after Mom died, but I know she still worked there and I'm sure it was appreciated. Last week I ran into the charge nurse on the 3-11 shift, in a Target store. She recognized me immediately -- I had to stop and think for a moment. She gave me a big hug and I told her that I think of everyone often, but simply can't come back to visit -- it's too painful for me. I also told her that I really appreciated what she did and that I know I didn't always agree with her, but I can see now that she is very good at what she does.

Here eating is a slow and relaxed experience and there is never a feeling of being rushed by a staff member. It's customary to take as long as you need, especially when dining in a group. Restaurant meals can go on for two hours or longer. The restaurant is happy because it means that the guests will be ordering more wine, desserts, coffee, liqueurs etc. and the bill will be larger. And satisfied customers will return and that's so important here in an area where there are so many restaurants competing for clientele. It's customary for the server to wait until everyone at the table has finished before starting to clear away the dishes for that course, unless the table is very cluttered with empty bread baskets, wine bottles etc. in which case he will discreetly remove the empties but not the plates while others are still eating. The knife/fork signal is universal here and a server wouldn't dream of removing a plate where knife and fork were not in that position. However if diners have obviously finished and haven't put their knife/fork in the finished position, and seem to be waiting for someone to come and clear away, the waiter may come over to the table and say with a smile something like..."is everything all right"....or "did you enjoy your meal"..."may I take these away?" But never when one person at the table is still eating. However if one wishes to have an empty plate taken away, all that is needed is a hand signal to the waiter for him to come and remove it. The government sponsors training for those who wish to work in the hotel and restaurant industry, since it is one of the main industries of Spain. So wait staff, even when not having passed through these courses, have normally been trained by the restaurant owner to a level equal to the current standards. SharonCb

If DH is here, medium russetts, scrubbed and placed on middle rack of oven at 400 for 40 minutes. He likes the crunchy skins. If it's just me (I like softer skins), same potatoes, same length of time, but wrapped in foil. Never had an explosion when cooking them in the oven, so never poked holes in them. Cook them hot enough and they are not "mushy". THen I do with the foil-wrapped ones what we used to do at one of the restaurants, pick it up and slam it on the counter, cut a slit in it and sort of press the ends toward each other to make a "mouth" for the butter and lots of black pepper. I used to microwave them because I felt bad heating an oven for just a couple potatoes. They're ok. But when I got my toaster oven I went back to baking them. Man, I didn't realize there was such a big difference! I always bake them now. But if I miscalculate the timing, I don't mind putting them in the nuker for a minute or two to finish them off.

It's one thing to make brownies, but gifts put the staff in an difficult position. Hospitals generally have strict rules that any staff are not to accept gifts or money from patients or families, and can get into serious trouble if they do. While you are certainly grateful for the wonderful care your mother got, the staff (who are all highly trained professionals) are doing what they are paid to do and shouldn't be tipped (which is what you gave them). A heartfelt thank you is more than enough.

Bringing in baked goods is better, since all the staff can enjoy them.

Lots of people still eat nuts and love 'em. Make a few without nuts and label them as such but I wouldn't leave the nuts out.

I once brought baked goods and a case of diet coke to an emergency clinic that went out of its way for my ds. Seems like an odd combo, the brownies and the diet soda, but it was well received.

I agree with other posters, baked goodies are always appreciated at the nurse's desk, and I've been known to leave bags of Hershey's Kisses and such there too.

Dad was diabetic and people somehow insisted on bringing him boxes of candy. I nearly always shamed him into leaving those at the nurse's station for those "nice ladies that take such good care of you, they deserve a treat".

I don't know about the nuts, I always make mine without because I don't like nuts in brownies or baked goods, I like to just eat them by themselves.

When I was in the ICU my DH brought the staff (3 shifts) Godiva chocolates. I don't remember him bringing the candy but the Thank You note said it all. They were very happy and grateful.

Excellent, sounds like a plan! Karen I considered chocolates too - especially with Valentines coming up. I may sprinkle the brownie tray with individually wrapped truffles, that would look festive :)

and Jessy, anything I bring comes with 'nuts' ;-)
