Dark Gray Kitchen Cabinets/Can't use Impervo?

After finally deciding on a color to paint my kitchen cabinets, I decided on a Benjamin Moore color called "Wrought Iron". The cabinets have never been painted before and I am taking my time with some advance preparation. It was my intent to buy this color tomorrow in the Satin Impervo Waterbourne ( since so many have recommended that for the cabinets) but a red flag went up today while researching that this deep color may not be available in the Impervo.

If not, would the Regal Latex Eggshell be durable enough for cabinets? Perhaps I could get this color in the Aura but you have made me doubtful about application since I am a novice painter.

If you could steer me the right way as to the best type of Benjamin Moore paint to get for a dark color, that is water-based and durable, I would appreciate it.

Well, let's throw the idea out there of just going ahead and using the alkyd, oil based, Impervo so you can get the color you want. Wonder if that's even an option in your opinion?

Aura's application vs. application mess with oil is one thing to consider. Oil can be fun to work with if you know exactly what to expect and have all the right stuff to do it. I think you can still get oil based most everywhere, but I guess availability is another concern.

One of the biggest drawbacks of oil is that people often want white and white oil based paint will yellow. Wrought Iron is your selected color so yellowing is not an issue for you.

The Regal line in any sheen would not be a good choice for cabinets though.

@feisty68: thanks for reminding me. I wasn't able to find older threads, so I thought posting a new thread might help others in the same situation. The house was built in 1868 and has a Mansard roof. Very little architectural detail has been preserved on the inside. The first floor basically consists of three 13'x13' boxes connected by arched openings: a front living room with a bay window, a dining room, and the kitchen in the rear. All rooms have the same red oak flooring in a reddish tone very similar to Adel Medium Brown. The door on the east wall, which is being resized, leads to a tiny room (can be used as a pantry) on the north and the outside on the south. The nook on wall D leads to the dining room. I'm a big fan of grey. My bathroom is predominately grey. Floor is a grey porcelain slate look in 18x18", wall paint is a light grey color (Seattle Rain I think?), and wall tile is a 1x3 inch ceramic mosaic in 3 shades of grey with light grey grout. The cabinet is a cherry laminate so I didn't go grey with the cabinet, but I love the feel of the bathroom with all that grey and polished chrome hardware. As I always say, it's pretty masculine, but I love masculine design. We have a glass block window in the shower that lets in a lot of natural light and that helps. For the kitchen, the floor is an interesting cross between grey and brown. We had decided on Silestone Gedatsu for the counter, then picked out the floor tile. Then I started to second guess the Gedatsu and looked at some greyer Silestone samples (Grey Expo, Unsui and Kensho). The Grey Expo just was not right at all. The Kensho was tooooo blue and the Unsui just felt too not right with the floor. Actually, the Unsui matches the floor pretty closely. I guess that was the problem, it was too much of the same color in the room and we didn't think we'd like so much of it on the counter, although I do think Unsui is a great color. So, we went with the Gedatsu! It's dark. Chocolatey brown. I hope it's not too dark. I really liked it the best out of everything we looked at. It's being installed on Thursday. I hope you do your grey kitchen :) And check out the Unsui Silestone! It's a really cool color.

Whether you go with white or dark cabinets (personally, I prefer the dark, even with white appliances) is your choice. However, keep in mind that if your cabinets are in good shape, they will outlive your appliances. You're not enamored of white cabinets, do you want to commit yourself to them "forever"? Unless you plan to redo your kitchen when the appliances die, you will have a similar decision to make when you need new appliances...and they won't die all at once, so you'll be re-committing to the color over and over again. If the cabinets are in good shape and painting is intended to be your only redo of them in the foreseeable future, then paint them the color you want, not to match your appliances. As Rosie mentioned, you can paint the appliances if they really bother you (using, I think, appliance or auto paint or a paint meant for metal). The bottom line is this: If the cabinets are not going to be replaced when your appliances die, paint them to please you, not the appliances. Then, for your appliances....(1) patiently wait for them to die and replace them with black or stainless, (2) sell them on Craigslist and then buy new, or (3) paint them now. I would wait b/f I decided what to do w/the appliances until you've painted your cabinets...then make the decision based on how you think they look! (If it were me and I didn't like them, I would probably go with option (2) or (3).) (If your cabinets are in only fair or poor condition, then you may be replacing them sooner than you think/plan! So, if you're willing to live with white for a couple of years, then it might not be so bad. Oh, and if they are in only fair or poor condition, don't put an expensive countertop on them now...it would be a waste of money b/c existing countertops very, very rarely fit new cabinets...even w/the same layout...and if you end up replacing cabinets, I recommend looking closely at your layout and changing it to be more functional if it's not ideal now.) I have an Axstad Gray Door and a Color Muse! Thanks to Lori Sawaya, I know how to get the LCH numbers for the door. Then you put that information into EasyRGB and select "Match". Below is the result I received. You can go to EasyRGB and enter the values yourself and choose the brand of paint you want! It looks like Benjamin Moore HC-166 KENDALL CHARCOAL is a close match! :-)

Thank you..I probably was not clear enough but I want to use a latex, waterbased paint. So the suggestions of using oil are not an option. With that in mind, which of the Benjamin Moore paint types must I look into tomorrow?

Maybe look into buying just a quart of Aura and see how you like painting with it. Ask about an extender, like XIM's, added to Aura as an option to make it a lil easier to work with.

I am also a fan of the dark gray kitchen cabinet. We chose a great dark gray color, but a horrible paint for cabinets as it turns out--Olympic Semi-Gloss, low VOC paint. It took forever to flash and just isn't as hard as a cabinet paint should be.

pcweary, please tell me what paint you ended up using. Are you happy with the results? And, can you offer me any suggestions before I mess everything up again?

We are going to repaint, I'm considering using BM #314 (Waterborne Satin Impervo Finish) or BM #309 (Impervex Acrylic Gloss Enamel). You mentioned that the Impervo didn't come in a dark gray. I read on BM's website that the Impervex comes in a variety of colors. I want something water-based, 100% acrylic, and an enamel. I'm also considering using Minwax Polycrylic Protective Finish as a protective coat over the paint.

I'm really curious to hear your suggestions, or those of anyone else who'd like to offer them.

While I have not painted kitchen cabinets with Aura, I have painted quite a bit of woodwork, a small dresser and the inside of a bookcase ~ and it is absolutly WONDERFUL to use on wood.

The paneled closet doors (white) in my BR look so nice and it is very easy to use; and I just painted my pantry also (but a dark color) and it is just great to work with.

I wouldn't hesitate at all to use this. Good luck!!!!
