Deckscapes disaster - what can I put over it?

Got talked into Deckscapes solid (acrylic) stain a few years back. Some areas peeled quickly but we have lived with it for 5 years. My questions are:

1. Do I have to use another solid stain? We don't want the same problem but I have a feeling I'm stuck with solid for life now.

2. Are there any better solids now that it's 5 years later?

3. Oil or acryilic? Can you recommend some top-rated brands?

4. Do I need to prime the bare spots? I pressure washed.

Remove all of the solid color stain with Maximum Strength Deck Stripper by Thompson's.

Then choose Thompson's solid oil or semi transparent oil stain.

Follow manufacturer's recommendations.

If you're in the heat belt, this weekend is not the time to refinish your deck. You'll be disappointed again.

Strip deck with HD-80 followed with neutralize with citralic acid. Let dry and seal with Ready Seal or Armstrong Clark.

When I read your first post I was thinking that I would never except such sloppy work. Yes I would make him tear it all out and do it over before I gave him another penny. When I read about him walking on the floor before it was cured and not covering it I found myself getting angry and it's not even my bathroom. This guy sounds like an unqualified moron! I would make him hire someone professional to clean AND seal it and if it didn't come clean I would not pay him. I have had several houses built and renovated an older house and when issues come up you need to voice your concerns and not back down. They have a great way of trying to talk you into some type of patch job or make some other type of promise. Do not accept what is unacceptable to you. If they don't want to fix it then they don't get paid, period. Then you can find a better contractor to finish/fix the job. Be strong and good luck. Amanda

What can I put over Thermatru finish?

Thanks - Thermatru says no sanding b/t coats, but I had to sand the top of the bottom sash, it was so bad. Hoping to avoid sanding the windows so much. Guess I'll put another coat on today (again, they recommend 3 hrs b/t coats but now it'll be 18). I know I should continue with waterbased, but was wondering at this point if I could just use a waterbased Minwax wipeon poly (after sanding) that won't show brush marks? Or do I have to stay with Thermatru? I might do the garage window (like attic, full soffits, but gets much colder) with Thermatru, but I've decided I don't want to use this on interior (conditioned space) windows, UV inhibitors or no. Any recommendations for those windows? I've done the jambs and sills in Minwax oilbased Wipeon poly (3 coats). Thanks

What can I put over the bed?

I felt the same way with my bed. I also have windows that flank the bed on either side but mine are a bit farther away than yours. Although I have a lot of framed art I could have put above it, I didn't want to take away from my pretty headboard. I also felt that the shape of a straight-edged picture frame or a round/oval mirror would work against the scrolled shape of my headboard. It may not be your choice, I found a simple cross that I've hung there and love the look. The ceiling is high enough that I felt I did need something there, but it didn't have to fill the space. Can I put self leveling compound over plywood?

Trying to level a room that has 3/4 inch drop in one spot. The goal is to prep for floor planks installation, vinyl or hybrid. Room is upstairs and subfloor is plywood. Condition of plywood is ok. Some people say don't use compound over plywood,. Some say it's ok. Can't decide what should I do.

Learned that husband isn't keen on stripping unless it's done by me. (Take that however you want.) So we are considering Sikkens Rubbol Solid. Not much in the way of reviews yet. Also BM Arborcoat. I'm just not sure about that clear coat needing to be reapplied every year. Has anybody used these products?

Solid oil over that mess could be a real disaster. Strip [the deck that is]. Cabot also makes a great product for that. After that you can use oil or acrylic, but i recommend priming, which is what should have been done the first time. Weathered wood needs all the help it can get to hold paint, of any kind.

The Sikkens Rubbol Dek (acrylic) is my favorite deck stain.

Well, looked at the sikkens and just couldn't find a color I liked so we have purchased the Arborcoat, hoping to stain tomorrow. Pressure washed, sanded chipped areas, and primed bare and new wood. (Only bought a quart.) Do we have to prime the whole deck? The rest of the old product is adhering well. Husband said he ligthly touched all board with the sander.

Painting over the old stain is not a good idea - the old stain will fail taking the top coat with it. Take it down to wood if you want it to last, otherwise get used to the idea of doing it every few years - if that.
