I won the grand prize.....

at a party the other night. It was a 15 lb. whole serrano ham. I was so excited because I have never won the grand prize at a drawing before! LOL

I am planning on serving the ham for Christmas Eve with the family and was hoping you guys could give me some ideas about what to serve with it.

The plans were to serve a soup and then have finger foods and that is still my plan. I just want the ham to be the star attraction for the buffet.

my mother in law would make raisan sauce with ham, i don't have the recipe but i have had a lot of success Googling recipes. with me not liking biting into raisans, she would scoop some into a blender and puree some up. i always thought brussel sprouts went great with ham, but unless you can get them fresh from a garden, buy frozen, last Thanksgiving i bought 3 containers of brussel sprouts from the supermarket and they were tough and bitter. i was thinking since they were in season the supermarket would have them in fresh, but apparently not. once picked, they go to a warehouse till a truck makes it's way to that warehouse to pick them up, and it could be weeks or more. thats when they get tough and bitter. better to get frozen this time of year, my opinion. a green bean cassorole is another fav of mine with ham. congrads on winning. have a Happy Thanksgiving

LOL...you all are too much. prosperity - yes he does look a lot like a real person. Slinkey - I'm certainly not used to him by any means...lol Angela - he is creepy...when you take his hat off the hair comes off with it and he looks like a creepy incarnation of Mr. Clean. Kathleen your match.com comment was just too funny. Yachter - you have a good point there. However ever since last night he keeps scaring the cr*p out of me. I keep forgetting he is there and everytime I walk by he lights up and starts talking. Almost made me jump out of my skin a couple of times...LOL luvs - I considered that and covering him with a sheet but then he'll just look like a big ghost...LOL My youngest is in negotiation with me to let him reside in his room until next Halloween - he thinks he is "cool". We shall see...he is certainly an inside prop and more then likely would not hold up to the weather we have up here around October. Happy Halloween everyone...:)

Congratulations, Lisa, what a great win! I think you use it about the same as proscuitto, sliced paper thin. It would be delicious wrapped around asparagus.

I don't think I would serve a sauce with a ham of this quality. You want the flavor of the ham itself to shine through: thin slices on an antipasto platter, on top of thin slices of grilled bread for bruschetta, or even on toast with warm scrambled eggs on top.

I agree with marigene, use it like prosciutto. You'll have that ham for a very long time. Sliced paper thin on good rolls with a good cheese and butter, that's about all it takes to make me happy.

Maybe you could set up a little deli and sell it by the slice. You could easily pay for Christmas with a 15lb. ham!

What a wonderful prize! Fifteen pounds of Serrano. Wow. My best advice is sharpen your best ham knife and practice slicing super thin. Yes to roasting some asparagras and then wrapping with the ham. Bruschetta sounds good too. Maybe some dark bread smeared with butter, or a compound butter, or bit of cream cheese then a nice slice of the ham on top. Wrap it around some breadsticks. Or, just hunk it up and send us each a pound.. lol.. Congratulations. Wonderful win.

Oh boy, Lisa, now that's a great prize. I've only had Serrano ham once and I agree, don't cook it with a sauce and serve it like a regular smoked ham. It needs to be served in paper thin slices. Wrapped around asparagus would be wonderful, as would a thin slice on a piece of dark rye with some good swiss.

What a yummy prize, I'm looking forward to hearing how you use it all.

Oh man lucky you...that's worth a flippin' fortune!

I'd make an antipasto plate to go with it, perfect for a buffet and fits your appetizer theme perfectly!

Roasted red peppers, several different olives, some nice cheeses, artichoke hearts, marinated mozzarella, baguette slices.

I'd also wrap thin slices around melon and asparagus ( as mentioned by Annie)

SharonCB has a recipe for a Russian salad that is famous in Spain as a tapas...that would be good. A Spanish tortilla would be good too.

Lisa what a super win and I agree with everyone else about slicing paper thin. I'm actually serving an Antipasto platter on Thanksgiving day and boy would I love to have that on the plate.

You certainly did win the grand prize! I can't even imagine what 15lbs of serrano ham would cost. I agree with everyone else though. Slice it paper thin and pair with manchego cheese, asparagus or whatever you wish. My favorite thing is sliced baguette with serrano, manchego, a little olive oil and lightly pickled cipolini onions. To die for. Enjoy your feast!!!
