Yippee!

Yesterday morning on WPOC (in Baltimore) I heard about the 1st annual cookie swap hosted by Laurie De Young. I decided to submit a few of my recipes, and I won, I won, I won! The winner is the Ribbon Cookie that is in my platter on my other post about Christmas Cookies. I get a $100 gift certificate to Marley Station Mall, $50 worth of MD lottery scratch offs, and to attend a luncheon and cookie swap hosted by California Pizza Kitchen with a guest! I'm so excited!

Here's the winning recipe in case you're interested.

Ribbon Cookies

Bands of cherry and chocolate cookie dough color these cookies in festive fashion.

1 c. butter

1 1/2 c. sugar

1 large egg

1 tsp vanilla extract

1/4 tsp almond extract

2 1/2 c. all-purpose flour

1 1/2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 c. finely chopped candied red cherries, divided

1/4 c. chopped almonds

1 (1-ounce) square unsweetened chocolate, melted

Line bottom and sides of a 9- x 5- x 3-inch loafpan with plastic wrap; set aside.

Beat butter in a large mixing bowl at medium speed of an electric mixer until creamy; gradually add sugar, beating well. Add egg and flavorings, beating well.

Combine flour, baking powder, and salt; gradually add to butter mixture, beating until blended. (Dough will be stiff.)

Divide dough in thirds. Stir half of cherries into one-third of dough; press into prepared pan.

Stir almonds and melted chocolate into one-third of dough; press over dough in pan.

stir remaining half of cherries into remaining one-third of dough; press over doughs in pan. Cover and chill at least 8 hours.

Invert pan, and remove dough; remove plastic wrap. Cut dough lengthwise into 1/4-inch slices. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets.

Bake at 350; for 10-12 minutes. Transfer to wire racks to cool. Yield: about 7 dozen.

Thanks, Linda! These cookies are so good and beautiful. This will be my 3rd or 4th year making them. But shamefully, I've never invented a recipe in my life. They are from Southern Living Christmas Recipes 1999. I'm nervous now, though. I have to make enough to swap with 25 other winners. But I'll have lots of neat good cookies just in time for Christmas! Not like my other 31 dozen is enough, no? :-) Thankfully, I've given away about 12-15 dozen of those though.

So the cat's outta the bag. Here's what happened. I thought, shucks, I can make more of these, and you all were so sweet and enthusiastic... I'll just have one main winner and make 8x10s for everyone else who entered. But the first batch turned out awful. The colors were too vivid. So I had to reprint them using a different program and I've gotta say, it takes quite a while to print these things. Anyway, when I was looking for something else, I ran across another print of the same thing, even bigger than the extra I had. So I made that the grand prize, which Shaun won, and then drew again. Annie (hope I'm not telling tales out of school) won the second prize but since she really liked another print more than that one, I decided to make her the one she wanted. Third place went to Chase, who actually got the original extra print. I've already told her to keep her eyes peeled for it. So everyone got something and I hope you all enjoy your prints. A big shout out to AnnT, who so graciously supplied me with ALL of your addresses. I wouldn't be so presumptuous, but Ann, if you wanted a print of something, I would be more than happy to send you one.

I use the Apple Smart Cover on my iPad Air 2, as I had liked the one on my previous iPad. Bummed that it's not available in leather anymore, but the finish isn't bad. I like the cover bec I can fold it as a stand, leave it flat, or pop it off and on easily as desired. For carrying around my iPad (eg., tossing it in my gym bag), I like the Built brand perforated neoprene sleeve with twist top corners. It's padded for protection, lightweight, and my iPad is easily accessed. I had purchased one for my original iPad at Staples, but gave it DH with that iPad when I got my Air 2. Thank you, Chase! I'm so happy. I am a little confused, b/c I need to bring enough for 25 people, but I double-checked and there were actually only 10 winners. I guess the rest are for WPOC staff. I've never been to a radio station either. And of course I'll still talk to you guys, hopefully more than I have been recently :-)

Thanks again! The only picture I have of this cookie is in the link. It's in the 10:00 position on the platter, between the peppermint bark and the lizzies. I plum forgot about the extra potential value of the scratch offs! And this past Wednesday, I also found out that the job I was laid-off from the end of November is now not laying me off. I even got paid today, and haven't done any work-work for the past 2 weeks. I would say that I have a lot of good karma right now. Maybe it's because I gave so many cookies away :-) Maureen, I'm not sure if the party will be on the air, but I'm going to the station next Wednesday at 11:45. So tune in if you have a chance, just in case. I'll be sure to plug the cooking forum and all my cyber-friends if I get a chance. Magothyrivergirl, you must live near by too?

Congrats! I will have to listen as well. I am in Catonsville. I have to admit I have been listening to Christmas music on 101.9 lately and hadn't heard about the contest. "Ahem, ah yes, I know the winner from the Cooking forum" how does that sound??? Gee maybe you need to make MORE for your local cooking forum folks to try too!!! However, I really want to know about those winning lottery tickets!

Yeah, she's probably out spending those millions right now, lunching with Paris Hilton and getting ready for her date with Brad Pitt!

Well, today was really nice. Lunch was from CPK. Thai chicken salad, a chinese salad, bolognese pasta with chicken, spinach pasta with light cream sauce, and spaghetti with meat sauce. Then the cookies! There were so many, and all so good! I only tried three varieties, an almond bark, chocolate espresso cookie, and cheesecake cookie. We brought a lot home, and the kids are looking forward to tasting them. We will do the scratch offs tonight. I've attached the link to the photos below, I am wearing a red sweater with black scarf, and have blonde hair. Near the end of the photos, I'm holding up my lottery tickets. Only my girls wanted to do the scratch-off's, and we won $12. Ah, well, the experience of listening to their glee when they got a winner made it more than worth it.
