Are you a different parent than you expected to be?

Hi everyone,

I just wondered about your thoughts on this subject: Have you turned out to be a different kind of parent than you expected/hoped/feared before you had your first child? Or are you pretty much as you expected/hoped/feared you'd be?

For example, some friends of ours said that they have turned out to be worse at disciplining their child than they expected or hoped to be. They sometimes find themselves just doing what will make life easier at the time, even if they realise that it's not a good idea in the long term...

Somewhat different I suppose.

Prior to having kids, DH and I always talked about when we would have them. "Oh, we'll NEVER be the type of parents who let our child play us against each other! And we will ALWAYS support each other in front of the child, and do our disagreeing out of their earshot."

HA! Best laid plans! LOL But we try our best...and despite our best efforts, she still manages to figure out a way to play us against each other.

mine aren't infants anymore. I behaved much as I expected I would when they were babies and toddlers. Now that they're 9 and 5, I'm WAY crabbier than I was.

And like your friends, I find that my DH and I do whatever is expedient, in terms of discipline, and teaching them to unpack their own backpacks, set the table, etc.

And I'm far less even-tempered. : (

I think that brickeyee might be clairvoyant for in my misspent youth I did train and work in fancy schmancy restaurants and the cooking habits I picked up there have stuck with me in my personal life as I moved on to a different career. That said I never had to actually design the workplaces (kitchens) and I simply adopted to the various layouts so I never paid attention to the principles of design. I suppose I'm kind of like Cole Trickle (Days of Thunder) who knew how to drive his car but didn't know anything about engines. As for the question of going to the fridge, I do so during prep but very rarely when I'm actually cooking. So it's not a matter of only making one trip and getting everything, I agree, it's a matter of having the fridge handy during prep and once I finish prepping I'm not really needing to make dashes to the fridge. In this way I'm the opposite of bmorepanic. The suggestions for the prep sink being are very sound and consider it done, in this plan and the very likely next plan as I start afresh. This was an enlightening topic and I thoroughly enjoyed reading everyone's perspectives on the issue at hand. One thing I've discovered is that there is a world of difference between using someone else's kitchen and DESIGNING your own. When using a kitchen you find ways to make due and your improvise and that's different than starting with a blank sheet of paper and trying to achieve a harmonious balance of all the components.

When you say red, do you mean a real red, usually with a yellow inside? Those sound like the wild NE native columbine A. canadensis) while the purple sounds like the European type (A. vulgaris). Any chance you ended up with both? The European one has a kind of rose colored version which shows up alongside the purple. If it's not a real red shade then it might be seedlings off the purple. I once splurged and bought two collections of mixed tall phlox. I couldn't resist the picture and really wanted that amazing range on the package so I figured even though it was about all my budget could afford, two sets should really make it a safe bet. They were weak little plants and didn't bloom the first summer, but the next year put on quite a show....except every last one was white. White was the one color I had already.

You could build a niche in the wall to recess the TV. When we renovated our master bath we recessed a large medicine cabinet with an integrated electrical outlet. Seems you could do that here too. It isn't complicated. Painting the wall a dark colour will make the TV "disappear" and will accentuate the sconces. In NYC, parent fundraising efforts are not allowed to pay directly for teachers. What they can do is pay for extras. For example, Studio in the School is an amazing art program that has a working artist trained to teach come into classrooms weekly, usually for the full school year. The classroom teacher is present and supporting the artist/teacher. The classroom teacher is also provided professional development. Another such program is Bank Street Colleges, The Emotionally Responsive Classroom. Parents can also pay for supplies, trips, freeing up money for more staff. A district, I believe District 3 in Manhattan is a story of the haves and have nots. Some schools, on the Upper West Side, raise incredible amounts of money. However, further uptown in Harlem, the parents can't necessarily do the same. A group of parents in the more affluent schools started a campaign to pool all the various schools PTAs' money and share it equally. I am not sure what the end results were. It was on the news for several weeks and I believe some monies were shared. It is my belief that unfortunately, many just can't understand how hard life is for some. That asking even for a $1 donation is beyond some people's abilities. I personally have witnessed children taking extra free lunches when no one was looking so their siblings would have something to eat that night. It isn't just the poverty, it is the mental health strain that just wears people down. Children desperately need sports programs for many reasons, including nurturing self-regulation and trauma relief. It would be wonderful if we as a society could see that all children had equal access to such programs.

My baby is now three months old. I'm already a very different parent than I expected to be! I thought I would remain much more emotionally calm than I usually do. I'm getting better, but our baby can be so much more frustrating than I had anticipated. My sisters' babies are so easygoing and relaxed, I suppose I expected our baby to be like them. But no!! 'Relaxed' is the last word you could use to describe our Ben! He is an intense little guy and we have to work very, very hard to get him to relax and (eventually, if we're lucky) fall asleep. My sisters' babies would fall asleep after gazing at a mobile for a while....

I've learnt that babies come into this world with much stronger preferences than I thought! Ben's strongest preference is for lots and lots of cuddles all the time, which is both incredibly difficult and an incredible pleasure. Ben is a beautiful child, Zena! I have one (of my four) whi is just like that-- intense. She is four now (my others are 6, almost 3, and 8 months) and she is still very intense and curious and self-sufficient and creative and is very engaging, imaginative, and sweet as can be. The best thing we found for her was a front-pack and sling. Carrying her around all day made her the pleasantest baby-- so content! She just wanted to be cuddled constantly and also to be able to look around and see everything and be involved in everything!

When I became a father 6 years ago it really gave me something to live for. Discipline has been tricky at times as the wee lad has turned out to be autistic and still tends to throw tantrums akin to the 'terrible twos' but with the correct approach it is manageable.

He's a chip off the old block. Loves helping me with DIY - he has his own toy tools. He has a soft spot for the cats, and is becoming a real petrolhead coming with me to watch rallies run by the local motorclub. I just can't imagine existing without him.

OMG, this is funny. I picked up this thread, since it had bumped up to the top again, thinking, "I'm going to post, 'I'm a lot crabbier than I thought I'd be."

And there I am almost exactly a year ago (Oct 15, '03) saying EXACTLY the same thing.

Are you a different parent than you expected to be?
