Gosh, my kids are grown, so it's been years since I was doing the baby thing. I need your help mothers out there in selecting a wonderful useful baby gift for the mother of a baby girl soon to be born. Her youngest is 6 years old, and this is the first girl. She is a busy professional and has a nanny if that helps in selecting a gift? She will get lots of gifts, that I know for sure, and want mine to be special. Please advise, and thank you for your time. I know how busy mothers are with infants!

Some of the best stuff we got when DS was born was the really practical stuff, like diapers, wipes, and formula (DS was a premie and most of the stuff was bought after he was born and given once he came home). I remember all the diapers that were bought for us! We had so many premie and newborns that I believe we didn't have to buy a pack until DS was home for a month! How about preparing a basket with little essentials, like burp cloths, bibs, diaper rash ointment, rattles, some of those plastic links that I've heard a lot of raving about (they are a great toy in theirselves and they also come in handy to prevent losing toys), small receiving blankets, onesies, etc. Sometimes a mess of little things means more than one big gift. I agree with the above. I got tons of gifts but it was the necessity items that were the most helpful. You don't realize how fast you run out of those items. PJ's, wipes, onesies, diapers, towels, washclothes, etc.

I am sure any gift you get her will be appreciated.

What Jane said as far as the old spike. I think you were on the right track, maybe use something besides paper towels so that when the roots do appear, they have a media to grow into. When used with sphagnum moss (available at big box stores, maybe even in the NYC area?) this technique is called sphag and bag. Open the bag every now and then or cut some very small holes in it to let in some fresh air occasionally. Sit it where it gets no direct sun, just bright indirect light. Once the roots start growing and moving into the media, you can un-bag, pot up and slowly move to more light. I would not be surprised if you lose the larger leaf on the spike side, it looks like it may have some type of discoloration very close to the axis of where it comes out of the main stem. Don't fret too much if it happens (if you tug gently and it comes off, discard it), just keep trying until it is growing roots or it gives up completely. Good luck, Bob

Buy larger size, one family I nannied she got alot of sleepers,etc. that her youngest son got at her baby shower and we kept changing him so he would actually wear and one was really long and yet when we said lets try it his toes are at the end and couldn't wear them long, they grow fast. What is really nice buy toddler clothes if you know if its a boy or girl. The baby equipement and such are extremely high prices, the car seats alone now a days are huge and like $300 and up and strollers and highchairs, all those things now. The best for parents to do is buy second high, join toy library where they sign for toys for however long its agreed and return it so kids get different toys. Instead buy books, that is so needed, read and be with the child in learning stage but enjoying it. I agree don't buy mobiles or things that parents decorate their babies rooms.

bpath, My GD plays with that doll and all her other ”stuffdies” all the time. I have had to repair several of her stuffed animal but not the Avery Lamb. It is in perfect condition. I’m pretty sure that the little pocket on the lamb is closed at the top. I won’t be able to check on that until after next week. My GD is definitely a cutie and she is precocious for sure. (Not that I am bragging 😊). I wish I could show her face but her Mom and Dad would not want that. I took up cake decorating 10 years ago when my first GD was born. I haven't taken any classes but as we all know the internet is full of instructions and ideas. I have started teaching my GD how to frost and do various piping techniques. They love making cakes for their mom and dad’s birthdays and other occassions. Maybe I should start a thread on homemade decorated cakes. ETA. I just noticed that I had commented 4 years ago on pocket on the Avery Lamb Doll. It is not open at the top.

Hmm. It's hard because so much depends on parenting style. E.g. Bastian co-sleep so we wouldn't have used stuff like a white noise machine. On the other hand, one of my fav gifts was a really nice $185 ergo baby sling (the Omni 360), but some babies / parents don't like slings so that wouldn't be of any use to them. That's why people need to register, LOL! What I wish someone had given me was a care package of all the stuff first time parents don't really know they need or think to buy. Like tea tree shampoo for cradle cap; super-soft wash clothes for first bath, tiny baby nail clippers, diaper cream, a wipe warmer, snot sucker, etc. All the stuff you end up realizing you need and have to make a drug store run for at like 8 PM. It could be all packed inside a baby bath tub, or in a little basket they could use as a laundry basket for the endless laundry they will now be doing, LOL. I also absolutely adored the custom onesie from my amazing GW friends that had a type writer on it and said "Once upon a time there was a little boy named Bastian Archer..." I took his first month pictures in that and they are on the cover of his baby book. There were also really cute cards that said "From the library of Bastian Archer" to put in books and then a gift card to get books so I could start his library. I loved the whole story theme and a baby cannot possibly have enough books so you could do something like that. (photo below so you can see how cute it was) Also loved a pre-paid photo session with a great local photographer for newborn/ baby pics that I could schedule at my convenience.

The last time I did the baby shower thing, I put a bunch of little things in one bag, like baby soap, powder, etc. etc. like a goodie bag. You could scale it up a bit and fill a huge basket. I wanted to do like a "mom's survival kit" for my friend with bubble bath (although that might not be good for a while if you've had an episiotomy! ouch - maybe substitute epsom salts instead or something), candles, relaxation stuff, etc. but she doesn't have a tub, just a shower in her house. It's so much fun!

Other useful things are often in the form of gift certificates - for film and photo processing, a portrait session, dinner out with hubby, a grocery- or meal-delivery service, etc.

If you want to buy clothes, buy her things for the appropriate season in 6-9 or 9-12 month sizes. She'll get lots of newborn and 3-6 month stuff that will be outgrown in a hurry, and it's nice to get some things baby can grow into. This might be especially nice since it's her first girl, so she'll be starting from scratch on clothing.

If she's had other kids (even if they're boys), keep in mind that she may already have many of the "basics" -- onesies and recieving blankets are often gender-neutral, and she's probably already got a lot of the early infant toys and equipment.
