How many turkey dinners?

Seems to me that this time of the year lots and lots of organizations offer a "Traditional Thanksgiving Dinner"...

I think I am getting off easy this year as one group that usually offers "turkey with all the trimmings" for their late November meeting had beef shishkebob!

But I have 2 more to go....besides the "Real" one on thanksgiving day.

So....how many turkey dinners will you be served before the big day?

I may be eating turkey every day next week...

DH will be overseas on a business trip and I am considering doing a trial run on a new method of roasting a turkey. I'm hosting Thanksgiving this year, and I have yet to be satisfied with how my turkeys come out.

I don't plan to make the complete dinner, but for a few days I will have turkey in one form or other for lunch or dinner. I really like turkey, but I may be "gobbling" by the time the real Turkey Day arrives.

We have 20+ for Easter and Thanksgiving every year, with a lot of young adults there. And I have a smallish galley style kitchen. As others have suggested, we always do buffet style serving with butter and condiments on the tables. Some of the things I do that make it easier are to set up drinks on the patio and appetizers somewhere away from the kitchen. I used to put a table in my office for the teens/tweens that was very popular - they liked being in there by themselves and preferred that arrangement. Sometimes I set tables out on the patio with either heaters or fans, depending on the weather. The bratty teens/tweens have grown to be such charming, intelligent and fun people that we all prefer to have them sit with us, and they keep that whole end of the table laughing. Happy Thanksgiving Canada! We aim for half an hour. Up to an hour would be fine usually but room temp and other factors come into play. The time it is sitting out during the meal, etc. Often some elders are present and young children...the kitchen is active and warm, more room heat may be used so guests are comfortable. The fridge is stuffed and opened often rising its temp. The danger zone of 40-140 for bacteria growth is hard to keep track of. A half hour is plenty time for a gravy and getting a crowd to sit, and getting sides on the table. The first thing i do when i have guests for the day or a few days is lower the fridge temp. My fridge has a 'blast' button for the fridge and freezer. Used when you can predict heavy use. Our turkey is good, organic, cooked properly, but not really the star of the show. Tradition for sure, but the sides are what everyone wants. And leftovers. (i make thanksgiving sliders with the leftover biscuits) We platter up but the oven stays on for seconds if needed. All sides stay in the 275 oven. A carved platter of turkey, with both legs, the other breast side goes in the fridge right away to chill. The carcass goes right back in the oven to pick later and roast for stock and soup. A good rule is to keep it hot, or chill quickly and keep it cold. Unfortunately I have no idea what their plan was. I felt bad because my communication was clearly not getting through, which is why it took so long to get even those basics across. This suddenly reminds me of a story I heard years ago, probably an urban legend, but here it is. A newly arrived immigrant family goes to the grocery store and ends up buying a can of crisco, fully expecting it to contain fried chicken parts as pictured on the label! I don't know if they realized the turkeys were plentiful because of thanksgiving or if they just thought that this was a regularly stocked item. I figured at the time that they were trying to get into the American spirit of things but looking back, I wouldn't be surprised if they'd only been in the country a few days and had no idea about Thanksgiving! I just have to keep telling myself that if they were brave enough to buy it, then they would be able to figure out if it was done after three hours or not.

Moonie-Rachael Ray cooked a turkey like that on her show just recently.She cut it in half and laid the cut side down.She said it cooks in about half the time.She did it on one of her 1 hour holiday meals show so I know it didn't take long to cook.Maybe not as pretty as slicing the breast all fancy,but I don't do that anyway.I just pull it all apart,take it off the bone and pile it on a platter.LOL

Lucky you Linda. I didn't think it was possible to have too many turkey dinners. Thankfully, one of our neighbours married an American and we have been invited to their Thanksgiving dinner. We probably won't have turkey again after that until Christmas.

If I feel ambitious and the clan clamors for it I might make a small free range bird and stuffing to have around after T-day. And mashed spuds. No other trimmings. We are going out for meals twice over that weekend.

None, even on Thanksgiving. A real ripoff, but when everyone else is enjoying dinner that is when I have to work the hardest. Just goes with the territory. I may buy a turkey and cook it the following week when things settle down. Then again, maybe not. My DW and I have had pizza on Thanksgiving day a few times. We don't always let the calendar dictate our food choices. However when I told my dad that I was busy on Thanksgiving he did have a look of horror on his face. He loves his turkey, mashed potatoes and yorkshire pudding. He will just have to have 'my version' another day.

Unfortunately, none until I cook it on T-day. I love turkey and would happily eat it more than once or twice, but I seldom make it for myself.

Maybe just one....but like another poster here, ours won't be on Thanksgiving Day either. DH has to work, my parents can't make the trip over from Phoenix, DD#1 is out of state and DD#1 is going to her BF's. If I serve one, it will be that Saturday, as DD#2 has to work very hard on Black Friday - she works retail!

One besides the Day-- as usual DH's at deer camp until 12/2 so Thanksgiving Day I'll spend at oldest DD's-- then cook a traditional Turkey dinner on 12/2 or 3 for the 2 of us.

We will probably do vegetarian on T-day to keep my son happy. And we will host his in-laws for dessert so DIL and I will be making dessert. I might try that chocolate meringue pie.

DH bought a turkey which I may cook this Thursday if chemo leaves me feeling well enough. If I do it on the BBQ rotisserie, it isn't much work and comes out really well. Then I'll have plenty of left overs for turkey lunches and might make a turkey soup with the carcass. We really like turkey.
