I noticed that there are a few of you who hate salads.

I hope this will not offend you too much :-).

A quick salad: avocado, cherry tomatoes and mozzarella cheese on romaine lettuce.

Where's the slab of fried chicken, and where's the ranch dressing for goodness sake?

OK, it is very pretty... too pretty to eat almost! (I'd eat the cheese and lettuce)

I should also mention Martin Frobisher, which decided to bloom this year after some little discussion about shovels and prime real estate. It is just pretty enough to keep around another year, a nice soft pink, which does not self clean. And is a sparse bush about 3' tall. Meanwhile other hybrid rugosas, planted at the same time or even a year later, Germania, Rose de la Hay, Ritausma, have grown above my head and are covered with blooms.

To edlincoln: Sorry, this is not about maples. I have been following your postings and plight about landscaping in the Cape and Island area of the east coast. Here I have a bit of experience. It is not easy. It should be noted that the whalers returned to their New England homes with all types of foreign plants with the hope they would survive the rigors of salt air and wind. This type of landscaping and plant selection requires trial and error, locating the 'quiet spots' on a property during a raging nor'easter where healthy plant growth can be encouraged and planting young, low stock that can grow and adjust to the wind. The later is very important. There are lots of tricks to baffle the wind. And some excellent gardening books dealing with your area situation. Now that I am way off topic, an additional bit of learning for those owning seaside properties where almost nothing will grow despite following all the "rules". That area is covered with sections of unmarked Indian burial sites. It has been my experience, and of others, that very few introduced plants will grow in and around such sites. It occurs to me that this may be your problem and a bit of historical research might be helpful.

Well in defense of White Flowers, which I absolutely love, in the Hot Humid South, they add a bit of cool and refreshing appearance to the garden,especially at night. I have made it a point to concentrate almost entirely on a White Garden, somewhat like Vita Sackville West's famous all White garden at Sissinghurst. I also do other colors in certain areas, but still prefer a monochromatic palette, such as all dark purple foliage, with various shades of purple ,lavender ,lilac. Charlene, everything has a season. Our salads came to an end, it seems like, months ago. Just too hot and dry. The last lettuce was bitter and tough, radishes were bug-eaten and not worth trying. Spinach bolted instantly. This was a long way from the tender greens and such of May and June. Seed for most of these crops has just been put back in the garden. We'll hope for the best in late September and October. Our baby carrots are long gone. The mature carrots weren't very sweet the last time we tried them so will wait until the cool weather sweetens them. Sometime that doesn't work too well but usually . . . It is cucumber season. Cukes need consistent moisture to turn out well. I have learned that the hard way and with some success. There are also nonbitter varieties - Penn State list All-season Burpless, Tasty Jade, Sweet Success, Diva, and Sweet Slice as being genetically bitter-free. There are others and I believe that "burpless" doesnÂt equate to genetically bitter-free. A choice of one of these varieties would give you a little latitude but moisture is a key ingredient, I believe. Did you dip it into lemon?
Very pretty but I would want a bit more dressing, perhaps a small puddle in the middle of that avocado rose.

I'd make that. It wouldn't look as good, and it'd have basil (love mozzerella, tomatoes and basil), but I'd make/eat that! Nice looking.

I love salads and have since I was a child. I would purposely fill up on salads so that I wouldn't have to eat others things in a meal. I don't like iceberg lettuse, however, and there are many salad dressings that I do not like, including thousand island and French. I generally do not like any salad dressings that are sweet. I don't really like macaroni salad - I prefer green salads. I like potato salads, as long as they do not have MW or sweet pickles - I hate sweet pickles.

Nice picture, but it took quite a while to load.

DC that is my FAVORITE salad. Well, at least way up there. I am so jealous of your tomatoes. Avocados I can only buy when they are in season and cost around a dollar. I make that salad in the summer, but I usually add fake bacon bits. But would be great without that too. Tomato and avocado, a match made in heavan and so beautiful in that flower. My salad is so plain compared to yours. That pic is my new food porn!

I made myself a special knife using a sharpened tablespoon. A very simple and useful tool to do cuttings like that.

I used olive oil.
