Nanny2a .. I can't take credit for the idea of using them as a buffet. It's been a quite while since I discussed these cabinets with the folks here, but I'm *almost* sure it was Brutuses ( thanks Bru! ) that come up with the suggestion of re-using them as a buffet. At the time, I didn't have space to use them as such .. but I just held on to them waiting for a good purpose and now one's opened up. :)

Very cute . . . what a great idea! I can't wait to see them all together and that spot accessorized. Seeing them brings back a lot of memories of my days working in hospitals and doctors' offices, though. You're right, those were made to last and last! Great repurposing and darned good thinking out of the box, too!

Thanks so much for taking a look at the pics and for the encouragement! I'm really happy these cabinets have found a home now.

Palimpsest and Flyleft .. My DH tinkers at restoring vintage cars and has taught himself how to paint. First thing we did was lightly sand the cabinets to just give them 'tooth' .. then wipe them down with auto body reducer to remove any dirt/wax/impurities. Then I picked out an 'all in one' auto body paint, it has the paint and the clear coat in together. On a car this would be considered a cheaper/less desirable paint, but for these it provides an excellent finish. For a nice paint job on a car, you'd use a two step process, paint ... then clear coat. To the paint he added a reducer ( to help thin so it can be sprayed better ) and a hardener for the clear coat to provide a very tough finish. Once they've been sprayed the next step is to wet sand. I'll take 'good' 600 grit sandpaper ( bought at an auto body paint store) and a sanding block .. dip them in water and lightly sand. All you're trying to do at this point is get the fine ripples in the finish out. Once they are out, you're done sanding. Then you take a car buffer and buffing compound, go over the cabinets just enough to heat the clear coat and provide a smooth finish. It's not really hard to do, it just takes a little practice to get use to working with the paint and different products. The most important part is you do need an very, very, very good respirator to protect yourself from the fumes.

CB .. I started collecting a few jadeite pieces as I find them reasonably priced. Ever since 'Martha" showed and interest in them a few years back, the price was skyrocketed .. so as I find things on my travels I pick them up. I figure at some point I'l have enough to display.

Teeda .. I'm probably at the moment going to use a wood countertop painted black, since I have the stuff here for it. At some point I'd like to replace it with a piece of soapstone. Right now I have a front room I'd like to buy fabric for, so I'm trying to keep the budget for this project pretty low at the moment.

I have the cabinets all finished and the hardware back on. I'm letting them set in the room to become good and dry before the countertop goes on.

Please excuse the jar of bunny food up there, that is not staying. *LOL* I filled it up this morning and didn't realize I left it there until after I snapped the shot.

That looks wonderful! Do you mind telling the brand, type, and color name of the paint? I ask because my laundry room cabinets are SW Jamboree Jade and, if your color is IRL how it looks on my monitor, I could see covering a couple of metal pieces I have for the that room.

That is just stunning Zipdee. You always have such great ideas and you and hubby do such expert work.

Wonderful!!! And, the beadboard behind them is perfect, as well. I'm very anxious to see more pics as this project of yours as it progresses. How thick of a wood countertop are you putting on it, if I might ask? And, are you making it yourselves or buying it?

Kitchendetective .. this is an auto body paint. I'm going to give you all the info on the can, because I'm not sure how it's pulled up at the store. The number is 43814 Prime. The OEM code is MX704966,WT7010. It's labled Ford ( N America ) Light Green. The actual brand we bought is Omni AE (MAE ) .. which is an inexpensive auto paint, the quart only cost $24 and it did all three cabinets inside and out.

Lynn, I have a 1 1/2 inch wood countertop that I'm going to recycle into this project. I just need to paint it a satin black, then I have some flat BM poly hanging around that I'll put on top for durability. I'm going to have my DH cut it to size, then router out the middle a bit, so it sits down on top of the three cabinets and provides a lip to cover just above the drawers.

Dilly Dally .. Oh yes! I've had a love affair with Big Chill fridges ever since they come out. We actually had planned on using one for this kitchen, then our fridge died and it needed to be replaced pronto. When my Kitchen Aid starts to go, I'd love to have a Big Chill next.

Prairiegirlz5 .. the colors I'm using in the kitchen and eating area are a dark and light jadiete green, white, black and red. Any thoughts on accessorise would be very appreciated :)

Thanks Reno! I'm still working on the countertop. Hopefully I'll have it painted today. The girls have half day today, so I'm not sure how far I'll get. I ended up getting side tracked on this project, but in a good way. :) I have pics of my 'side track' and I'll put them up.

zipdee, I spaced this thread -- thanks for writing out the directions. Just brilliant work you all have done.

The rabbit food jar looks quite at home up there...do you have a place for jars of staples, rice, pasta, that sort of thing? A whole shelf full would look perfect, and maybe free some pantry space? And I would clip a library lamp to the front of the shelf, hang a big mirror in a waxed pine frame over the cabinets to brighten and open the space, and then furnish it with a 50's-retro or a wooden breadbox, an old wooden tool caddy full of table silver, and a basket of old linen tea towels to use as napkins.
