Stucco foam trim

Not exactly paint,.....but can't find a forum for this. I am getting ready to paint my stucco home myself and I've been toying with the idea of adding stucco foam trim around the window frames. There are a couple companies that sell it on-line, as a do-it-yourself project. Stryotrim in Sacramento is one I'm looking at. I see a lot of people in Cal. have this done during paint or restucco projects, and a lot of new homes have it around the windows & doors. Just wonder if it is as easy as they say ?

I've either seem it at Home Depot or Lowes for sale .At least you would be able to sample a pc. before the investment.

I've had a very bad experience with what your suggesting. i used a commercial styro trim around the windows on the front of our new home. since the durable drivit coating is not available to the diy-er, i found a rubberized coating and applied it. looked great (for 2 weeks) and then strange holes started appearing. had me baffled until one day a wood pecker flew up and started pecking on it. they have now made 2" holes in several places on all the top pieces. i am now in the process of replacing it all which is now taking 3 time longer. hope this helps.

Could Hardietrim be used to fill in where the wood came out, or is it too thin? Could it be placed over if filled in like in the picture? I'm not too keen on styrofoam trim. But I have the same problem as the house featured here -- the old wood trim has to go, and I'm worried if I just have the area filled in with stucco, the finish might not match well enough or it might crack.

That's how it's done around here. I think it looks good and has held up very well for us under harsh summer and winter conditions for 18 years. I didn't even know it was foam until I had some other work done on my house a few weeks ago.

@HALLETT & Co. Great answer, thanks! We'd love for the whole house to be a different color, but don't have the budget for it right now. So maybe we could replace the trim when that project comes up. The quality of work on the remodel is mixed and we'll be steadily improving it. @toddinmn Yes, I started off looking at painting the trim, but then got more and more bothered by the style once I got into choosing a color. Skimming the trim smooth sounds appealing, but stucco is so strong, that I can't picture it coming off to leave a smooth surface! What do you mean by "venerating"? I tried looking that up but couldn't find anything. @chiflipper I was looking at a mossy green for the trim, actually. Funny you should mention the ironwork because that's my favorite thing about the house! But thanks for the input. I'll think about it. :)

If you want them to appear to really be structural, the spacing should be something in the order of 6'-8' on center. Placing one in each corner of the exterior of the house is a dead give away that they are fake. If it was my house I'd make the corbels match the other trim.

I too am considering replacing the wood trim with stucco trim. I contacted Stryotrim of Sacramento, however I am not convinced they are the best choice. They could not provide a sample of the product, and they have no refund policy. I also contacte Cyrus Foam products out of the LA area - they were even less responsive.

Not sure of your outcome - but very interested.
