Which is the better paint? The store I normally frequent sells the Ben and Regal Select, no Regal Classic.

Regal is being phased out (thank god for this as BM has far too many lines of paint). Regal Select is their premium line of paint which is one step below Aura. Ben is the cheap stuff.

Damn the girl at the paint store gave me Ben for exterior trim, luckily am just touching up some trim. Will go to another store that knows paint.

Well, I bought a quart of Revere Pewter, and one of Gossamer by Pratt & Lambert...just a tad deeper than the Feather Gray, as well as a test quart of Sherwin Wms Requisite Gray--the pretty one from Ttodd's old bedroom pictures. They are all so close. Seriously close. The Requisite Gray has the same depth as Revere Pewter, just maybe one slight tad more gray. The Gossamer is almost a match for Revere Pewter. So, now I've determined that what I need is something just a little warmer, and perhaps a shade darker. If you saw my living room right now, you wouldn't even know what to think. I've splotched a dozen things. All walls are painted. Just not the same!! Red

Thanks, all! I will be using it to paint older oak kitchen cabinets and maybe the walls of my kitchen, for a monochromatic look (will keep the white trim). My kitchen is in desperate need of a freshening up and I have heard trying to renovate right now with all of the covid delays is a nightmare. Hoping a coat of paint will buy us a couple years. Didn't want white, just something a couple shades lighter (and less orangy) than the oak. I will post the after pics when its done. Lenox Tan - I saw online how popular it is, with designers as well. I understand its a great color, too, and a bit deeper/darker.

Hi plan2remodel -- I am certainly no expert, but you may want to research if it makes sense to use some kind of anti-mildew primer first before painting as a kind of sealant. This might be an oil base which will smell, so target a time of year when the windows can be open. My painter told me after the fact that because I used Zinsser BIN as a shellac (oil) based primer, the paint does not soak in as well, and this was another reason why the BM Aura Bath & Spa needed three coats. So either plan for a minimum of 3 coats if you continue with the Aura Bath & Spa or perhaps research if there are other, better coverage, high-humidity tolerant paints. Not everyone likes the same colors. That's why every paint manufacturer has hundreds to choose from. There are at least a dozen whites as well. Impossible for us to predict which one you will like since it also depends on the lighting you're working with. In low light I would lean toward whites with some yellow like White Dove, Simply White and Cotton Balls. You don't think yellow when you see them. All colors are influenced by what is next to them also. Since you're working with the opposite exposures of north and south that can be problematic as colors look very different in those lights. I also have mostly north and south exposures, but I always use colors instead of white. I used Simply White for trim in all rooms except the one with strong southern light where I used Chantilly Lace. I wish I had used White Dove. I find Chantilly Lace to be too strong - blinding. But Chantilly Lace is very popular. Keeping in mind the fixed elements in a room such as the flooring, cabinetry (if relevant) and any furniture you already own, start sampling. Paint chips are a starting point, but you need to graduate to larger samples before committing yourself. As for coverage, whites aren't the best, so use primer and as many coats as is required. If you have chosen the right color for yourself the extra work will be worth it. And consider that using some color instead of white might actually give you a better result.

I'm headed to the BM store today to buy paint for my shutters. I don't want to buy Aura. Have been using MooreGlo, but I don't see that anymore, so I was going to go with Regal Select. Why is Ben better for exterior work? I thought Ben was for people who wanted a low-VOC option.

P.S. I don't want Aura because from what I have read, it dries too fast and is thicker than other paints. Both are disadvantages when dealing with the nooks and crannies of shutters. Right?

There is an Aura extender but I was told Regal doesn't have the dry problem from low VOC and I'd love it as much as Aura. Aura does have that color lock technology.

I think Moorguard and Moorglo are being phased out as well, replaced by Regal Select exterior paints. I just did a couple exteriors with the Regal Select and it seems to perform just as the Moorglo did.

I bought some today, the exterior paint is called Regal Select MooreGlo SoftGloss. The paint store guy said it was a higher quality than Ben.

We've been pleased with SW Duration exterior paint. Haven't used Ben Moore.

I used Aura last night for the first time, and I'm in love! I'm not a professional painter, but I've painted every room in my house a couple of times, so I have some experience. I painted one wall of my dining room last night.

I used a 1/2" nap roller, so it took a bit to initially load the roller with paint, but once I got going, there was no stopping me. I looked at it up close this morning, and I can't see that I even need to touch up, much less apply a second coat. It cut in very smoothly. It does dry FAST, but doesn't show a distinction between dried cut in paint and rolled paint.

I can't wait to paint the rest of the dining room and the kitchen with this stuff. I paid $67/gallon, but I think it was well worth it.

Oh, and the Putnam Ivory color is lovely too!
