Staircase options? Carpet runners? Pads?

I'm getting a solid oak staircase (which I'm kind of regretting now) and I would like to add something to make it non-slip. I have a large dog that will be free to roam the entire house, so I don't want to him to get hurt while climbing down the stairs. The most obvious solution is a carpet runner, but it seems that it would be expensive to hire a professional, and it's more time-consuming than I would like for a DIY project.

Are there any other options that I am missing? This is a starter home and I'm hoping to figure out a solution that is as economical as possible. Thanks!
