Remember that yellow walled toile bedroom?

For those who may not have seen my yellow toile bedroom, I'm posting a picture of it after revisions were made last year. Although it was a happy room, I was never thrilled with having so much yellow in the room. I made the duvet, pillows, dustruffle and curtains, and plan to keep them in place for at least another year or two. The only alternative left was to paint the walls a different color, and I've been searching for months for something I liked. This new color is actually grey, a SW color called Rain, but in this room with it's northwestern orientation, the color comes off having almost an aqua blue tint, which I'm delighted with. In all fairness, I should have waited for a sunny day to take my photos, because the room looks much better in the bright sunlight that we usually have - these photos were taken on a dark, rainy day....:-(

Now that I've made this change, I need to change my shams and summer quilt that is at the foot of the bed, since the blue's are not compatible. During the summer we use a lighter spread, and fold the yellow duvet at the foot of the bed for those nights that the A/C is on full throttle.

I'm thinking of getting a light weight white matelasse spread for summer use, instead of trying to match the unusual wall color. I'm also excited because I've found a larger, wider side table to use beside the bed, but I haven't picked it up yet. Do you think white matelasse would work, or have any other suggestions?

From the way you describe the room, you are wanting something soft, colorful, but that will keep the feeling light and sunny. Any of these might fill that bill, because they are both pastel and sophisticated, and would provide the shot of color that looks so great with toile. There's a really lovely blue-green from Duron called "Window Pane." Duron's "Gleeful" is a near-perfect sunny apple green. Other choices might be BMoore's "Queen Anne Pink" or "Windham Cream" from the historic group, or "Green Tea" or "Facepowder" from the Mount Vernon group from Sherwin-Williams.

les - Brought the tuffet up this past weekend and I love it! It always surprises me that just one piece added to a room can pull a space together so much. It is shaped liked a cushion-cut diamond - square top that angles down on the sides. I have it set on the left side of the rocker, sort of under the loon print. It doesn't crowd anything and the square shaped top works with the boxy shape of the rocker, while the curved feet mirror the curves of the handles. The stained feet make it not too matchy-matchy. Since my nightstands, headboard & chest all match, I think it's better not going overboard with more black wood! The rocker was placed there because it gives a view right out to the mountain and brook, but I will move things around as you suggested, just to see. I also like the idea of a pillow with the big button. Maybe I'll leave the tuffet black, and just cover the big button with a coordinating fabric (?) And I'd still like to get another rug for the sitting area, though I'd probably move it out in the summertime. A friend who came for dinner on Sat., who had never seen the cottage but had looked up this post, brought me a Wall Words saying as a hostess gift. She made it clear it was up to me whether I wanted to use it or not. The script is black and it reads,"Prayers Go Up, Blessings Come Down" which she thought would look good on the wall behind the bed. She said she thought the phrase worked especially nicely because the wall is angled "Up" and that coming upon this property was a real blessing. Thoughts? oceanna - I can just feel how badly you want to dress that room! I now it probably looks sparse, but if you stood in it I think you would feel differently. My aim is to have it be an uncluttered space where my eyes are drawn to the outside views and sounds. I want to appreciate the way the sun glows off the wood floors and highlights the knots and texture of it. If this were in my home here, in a city neighborhood, I would be with you(and Cher!)100%, though! And I appreciate the tips on covering an ottoman. You inspire me to give it a try doing it on my own!

Thanks everyone! cherigw, I did like the yellow, but after awhile I started to feel it was almost like a children's room. Maybe it's the trend lately with the warm greys, but I always like greyed colors in general. Honestly, I liked the yellow in late afternoon but hated it in the morning. If I were to paint yellow again, I would make sure it's not lemony but more like EK Honeysuckle or Restoration Hardware Butter, which I have in my kitchen. My mom's whole apt.(my basement) is yellows so I feel I have yellow in there as well. After seeing Pirula's photos of her bedroom I knew I wanted something similar. It was either between off white and Stony ground. Stony ground won out because it was a bit deeper in color for the bright sunlit room. Thanks everyone again. I feel like I finally got a color right! I was feeling so down on myself because I wasn't 100% thrilled with my living room choice.

I lived with my folks for a year before I got my current apt. during a relocation for a job, so I know how that goes. Here's what I suggest. Find out if you can get a storage box at the local U-Haul place or rent a storage locker. Pick a clean, well lit, well attended place that you won't mind visiting from time to time to get stuff you need. That will help with the decluttering. Do everything you can to put your stuff in closed storage, that helps make the room look restful. I store a lot of my teaching supplies in clear plastic boxes in shelves, organized by project. Is there an unpainted furniture outlet near you? That's another source for basic storage and office furniture. Check out IKEA's Web site for inspiration, but also definitely peruse the "Apartment Therapy" Web site too. Once you get it de-cluttered in there and narrowed down furniture wise, you can work on editing and displaying your art. First things first. Get a friend to come and help you edit your clothes and other stuff. I have a friend with great taste, she helps me edit out what is no longer working for me, clothing-wise.

Thanks for your comments, furlecity, roseabbey and loribee. Oakleok, I made the toile duvet, matching curtains and pillows. I do custom sewing and toile is one of my favorite fabrics to work with. I love it, too, so that's why I'm trying to keep it on the bed for a few more years until something "new" catches my favor!

Beautiful, peaceful room.
I would get the white matelasse and cover the bed with it and fold the beautiful yellow toile duvet at the bottom of the bed.

Nanny, your room is cozy and inviting, great job. I think a white matelasse would be perfect on your bed. It's funny when I first saw the before pic I thought, 'That bed would look nice with a white spread/throw.'

You have helped to solve my dilemma with choosing colors for our guest room. (see today's post asking for help w/paint) I painted the ceiling a true light grey, we love it. After seeing your room I have decided to paint the walls that color also, then do as you did and add color with linens and accessories instead of the wall. We have a dormer which I will paint darker gold for warmth. There will be a window seat there with sconces for a cozy reading nook.

Your room is beautiful! I love the Rain with the yellow toile. I agree that the yellow walls were too much, but can you post the name of the yellow paint? It looks like a lovely soft yellow, and I'd love to know what it is.

I really like the new wall color. You even recovered your bench! I think a white matelasse will look really good. Make sure to post some pics of your new table.

Love the yellow and blue....my favorite (I'm working with those colors in the LR/DR). The room looks so much more peaceful with the new Rain color! Love the Toile! You're very talented.

Like your new wall color! It is amazing what paint can do. What a talented seamstress you are. I like toile also, and I like your wall lamps. I have been looking for a pair for our bedroom. Keep us posted when you come up with more designs!

Where o where did you get them?

Both bedrooms look very nice but the gray one is more soothing.

Thank you, all of you, for your positive comments! I am so much happier with this color, and do find it very serene and calming! Now I'm wondering if I should use roman style bamboo blinds for the windows, instead of sheers, what do you think? Do the sheers make it look too dated? I don't like the look of just panels, and would need something more for privacy, but would prefer to get more texture, as opposed to more fabric, if you understand what I mean.

Marisany, I wish I could tell you what the yellow paint color was. I used a whole gallon of Valspar that time, and didn't save the label. All I remember was that it was Honey something...... wish I could help you more.

Anitamacey, the wall lamps came from Pottery Barn, several years ago. They originally had square ivory colored shades that looked too contemporary for the feeling I wanted in this room, so I found new shades online to replace the square shades that were on those fixtures. That's why you can't find something similar, they've been "re-worked" too many times!

And that Westie is my little Dixie, my other one is Dundee, who is usually up on the bed!

Love your new paint color and your toile bedding and WTs. You are quite talented! I switched over to a matelasse coverlet last year and I highly recommend it not just for looks byt for comfort. Then I'd fold your duvet in thirds and put at the base. You may also want to consider a cream or antique white coverlet instead of the white: perhaps purchase both and see which one looks the best. You may also want to consider ordering a larger king size one since they do shrink and your mattress looks tall.

I think your sheers give the room a light, airy and restful feel. Also looks more private which is something to consider before switching them out to bamboo blinds. Did you mean blinds or shades? I'd prefer shades over the blinds. It gives a nice, textured organic feel to the room. You cannot go wrong with either choice. It may also let in more light for your northern exposure, but so too the view.

We used SW Rain in our master bedroom and the color is definitely easy on the eyes. It looks great with your yellow bedding and WTs. And yes, it does have green undertones, which is one of the reasons I chose it.
