I'm Too Young!

...to be a great-great uncle. I just found out that my great-nephew and his wife are expecting their first child in November.

I'm delighted for them and actually am getting a kick out of the thought of being a great-great uncle. We never had any greats in either Dad or Mom's family when I was growing up. Mom was tickled when she became great-grandmother.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention that I'll turn 60.

Anyone else a great anything?

Wow--Congratulations!

I'm only 2 years younger than you, and am just a 'great aunt'. I have 2 great nephews--but they live over 1000 miles away, so I don't get to see them very often. Funny thing is, I'm not even a grandmother yet.

Oh what a pain to be bedridden in the summer! It's horrible to be suffering with anything serious at anytime, but it seems even worse when it keeps you from doing what you love. One thing that I have found is that no matter what goes right in the garden, it's the failures that we obsess about. I had one of the best years ever if you look at the whole garden. But I had an almost complete failure of my tomato crop (damn squirrels picked almost every last one!). That was a pretty serious blow, and then I found I has a serious infestation of narcissus bulb flies! I think I actually considered throwing in the towel (or rather trowel) for a few minutes, but then I turned around and looked at the rest of the garden... Oh my! It's such a lot of work to sow the seeds, plant the seedlings, and tend the plants that it can be frustrating when something goes wrong! But every year I have seeds that don't germinate - sometimes there's something wrong with the seeds, sometimes they're challenging or require a step I left out. Every year I have perennials that don't come back after years of me lavishing care on them. Every year I have a different bug that picks my yard to call home. Something always goes wrong. But the joy you get when you see that long awaited flower open, or see a plant covered in bees, butterflies, or humming birds! When you taste that first tomato after a winter of grocery store ones! When someone says "You grew that from a seed?" and you just flush with pride that you can actually do that! Wow! All that makes it worth it to dig on year after year. Garden on! BP

Hi Jean! Welcome! I hope you'll have fun here, I love it. Everyone is very helpful and full of advice. And wonderful pictures that will have you wanting and needing more. Get yourself a spreadsheet started. Your going to need it to keep track of all the eye candy you'll find yourself 'needing' . I believe when I first found this forum last year, I had a wish list of roughly 200 varieties. I have since aquired 50 or so from that list and my 'need list is up to about 400 or so!!!!!!LOL!!!!!! I keep it in spreadsheet form now so It's easier to keep track. I realize the only way I'll get them all is to win the lottery but A girl does need something to dream about all winter. Angelfalls, I'm so very sorry for your loss. I too, remember being 16 and so in love. I know that the feelings are real. Having lost my 19 year old daughter and watching her boyfriend deal with her loss, I can speak only from that experience. I have not ever lost a boyfriend. They loved each other very much and he grieved greatly, as you do. After almost 8 years, he recently found another girl whom he loves and who makes him happy. He will always have Christin in his heart along with all of the very happy memories and so many special times that they shared. Just because he has moved with his life doesn't mean that he has forgotten her or ever will. I know that Christin would want him to have a happy life because she loved him that much. I know that you don't feel like living or thinking about the future and Christin's boyfriend didn't either. All he could think about was Christin and being with her again no matter what it took. As time passed, that pain eased and happy memories took the place of the horrible sadness and grief and lonliness. The same thing will happen with you. I know it doesn't seem possible now, but it will happen. Just take each day at a time with your grief, just like we all have to do. I promise you, he will remain in your heart, but your heart wom't feel broken anymore. It will heal. I'm glad you came here. We all care. Forty is young for such severe symptoms. Maybe try talking to someone at a health food store about herbal remedies and possibly drop a few pounds if you're overweight, since hormones and weight seem to be connected somehow. Good luck!

I'm a Great Aunt...have been for 17 yrs.I'm 54.
My Nephew adopted his wife's first kid...he's 22 now.The thought his girlfriend was pregnant but she wasn't.So I was almost a Great Aunt! LOL!

I am 48 and still have many great aunts living. The last great uncle just died last week, I was the closest to him. Saw him every week.

My kids have lots of great great Aunts still living. They are all on my Dad's side. My Mom was the youngest so they are all gone now.

I love all the stories they can tell me about our family and community.

I'm a great great aunt. (I'm 61.) My siblings were grown when I was born...so my nephew, my age, has grandchildren...so I'm a great aunt to his kids and a great great aunt to their kids...not that I am a "great" aunt. I am a lousy aunt, I suppose. They live in California and I don't even know them.

No grandkids of my own, since my daughter says she isn't ever marrying...altho she has a long time boyfriend, and not having children...but they have given me a beautiful grandcat. :))

And, of course, I have my grand possums. A couple of the possums I raised last year still live in my yard and gave me grand possums this year. And I have grand coons and probably great grand coons from Audrey, the raccoon I raised about 6 years ago. Maybe even great great grand coons.....

Congrats. Spoil the little one all you can. I have one greatgrandson, now a year old, and a little great granddaughter to be born any day now, and one (boy?)on the way come October.

I became a Great aunt this year when my 21 YO niece had twins, Mariah and Mia. The good thing is it makes my SIL a Grandmother. I haven't gotten to that yet.

I became a great aunt at age 17...a great great aunt at age 47...my sis became a grandmother at age 38...a great grandmother at 67...I'm now an aunt 17 times, a great aunt 33 times and a great great aunt 6 times!(man I had to do some quick finger adding!) I enjoy them all cause its gonna be awhile before I'm a grandma..(or I hope so!)

I'm aunt 11 times and a great-aunt 11 times. Oldest great-nephew is 21. Youngest is 9 months.

I am 48 now.
I've been a great aunt since I was 15. Seven great nieces and nephews.
I've been a great-great aunt since I was 32. Seven great-great nieces and nephews.

My mother is in her glory with all her grands, great grands, and great-great grands.

My Oldest Great Niece is 19, so some day I will be a Great-Great. My Youngest is my Great Nephew Diego who just turned 1.

You beat me out - I'm a great uncle only 26 times. Lol.

I'm really looking forward to seeing my great nephew and his wife when I go back to MI in May for his cousins wedding. He's the second great to get married and the others are not far behind.

Who'd of thunk I'd be a great great uncle! Not me.

I am still 53, till next month, LOL, but I am not a "real" grand yet.

I adopted my friends baby girl as a grand child, but my kids aren't parents yet.

I became an aunt at 10 and a great aunt at 32, so I may be in the running to be a great-great aunt by 60. Congrats!

I was married to a man 12 yrs older than me so my DS#2 was born in Oct. & became an uncle in Mar. LOL Four years later his sister made him a great uncle. :]

Steve...I was BORN an Aunt...My sis is 21 years older then me...She and my Mom were pregnant together!!..(weird I know)...I have a nephew 6 months older then me and along with his three older sisters....so their more like my siblings then my REAL siblings! Enjoy them...they grow up sooo darned fast!! When our Mother died in 1987, my sis became my mother figure and Grandma to my kids!! In fact they still call her Grandma Barb!!

I love reading all these replies. I had almost forgotten about my one nephew who is six months younger then I am.

We went to the same high school, and it always tickled me when people would ask if he was my brother and I'd say no, he's my nephew. A few of them, for some strange reason, had a hard time understanding that.
