Tamale question.

I've made tamales several times. They have been delicious, no complaints from anyone. I have made the masa with lard. While I think they are quite tasty, I'm not so sure how healthy they are. I am wondering if taste or texture will be much affected if I use vegetable oil in place of the lard in the masa. Does anyone else have experience with making tamales without lard?

I plan to make a large number of them this weekend with a friend. She wants to learn and I'll appreciate the assembly help.
