My son left

My son was married in July of 2010. He is 31 years and hi bride is 21. All was going well until my son called one day and said that he and his wife were fighting and it was because of me. Apparently she is under the impression that I said something that dissed her mother. I did not. From that day forward I have been cussed out, told I wasn't what my son wanted in a mother and flat out ignored. Mothers day came and they ignored me. Fathers day came and they brought my husband a present and spent time with him. They told us they wanted just a friendly relationship with them. They recently moved 7 miles from our house but have only seen us once in 3 months. They recently left the area and moved to where her mother lives. They did not tell us goodbye nor have they called. I guess it is all my fault! What should I do next?

There must be more to this story,your son surely wouldnt ignore you for no reason,why wait for your son to see you?go to see him .If that were my son I would be up there in a flash to see what the matter was

I think that whatever you said must have been out of order or misunderstood! If you want to continue a relationship with your son and future grandchildren, you should try to put aside your personal feelings/impression of your son's wife and her mother! Perhaps she does not have the maturity and experience of someone like yourself to not take your remarks as criticism.
If it were me, I would apologise to all three of them and try to make it up to them. I would certainly show my daughter in law that she's always welcome in my home, after all she loves your son and he loves her, chose her for his wife, to be mother of his children. Your son will love you for this!

Thanks all for your kind words. Love-a-stray told me she came from a family with small children. They had to give her up because they were moving out of state. Now I wonder if it wasn't the "hoarding" that did it. Although I could see small children piling stuff in one of those pop-up tents and she was just copying what she was seeing. Whatever the reason I just love it. I never know what she is going to do next. When I came home from shopping on Saturday my living room was decorated with shredded Kleenex. They were everywhere from the sofa to the end tables. She must have had a ball. She was laying on the end table next to the empty box looking so innocent, as if to say "Look what McLovin did." Now my Kleenex is on the mantle. She hasn't learned to get up there (yet). Lisa, Juanita: I had heart failure last Monday. I was carrying my trash out the side door to place on the tree lawn. On one trip back I opened the door and McLovin shot out like a bullet. OMG, I almost passed out. I grabbed her by whatever I could grab. It happened to be the fur on her back. I pulled a handful out. She struggled out of my grasp and ran back into the house. I was so shook up I had to go to bed. My knees were shaking so bad. I always pick her grass that grows around the side door, but with the cold weather it is dead. I think she wanted to help herself. She must have been hiding around the corner of the cupboard. Ususally when I see her I tell her "Mickey, no" and she walks away from the door so I can open it. An all black cat loose on the streets two weeks before Halloween is not good. She really scared me out of another year's growth. Hopefully it was the wider growth, and not the taller growth. lol Jenny

There must be very little if any insulation in the walls and poor air sealing for the area to be so cold--and that's even with the furnace in the basement and a couple of vents. A direct vent natural gas fireplace or freestanding stove would do the trick. And it would be a great selling/renting point for the landlord. However, will the landlord be willing to shell out the $3-$5K cost for future benefits?

Trudy, that's an ambitious ride, good for your son. I'd offer to give them a meal if they were anywhere near Michigan. I agree with the "light and portable" issue, and of course the mailing/staleness/arrive intact thing is always a concern. How about some homemade high protein snack bars? Amanda always liked these, made with chocolate chips in place of the carob, and you could add those pecans Lars mentioned. PROTEIN SNACK BARS Melt together 1/2 cup butter, 1 cup peanut butter, 1 (12 ounce) package carob chips. Pour over a mixture of 1/2 cup sesame seeds, 1 cup coconut, 1 cup wheat germ, 1 cup nuts, and 1/2 cup sunflower seeds. Pat into a 9 x 13 inch pan and cut into bars. Powdered drink mixes like Gatorade would be nice for a change from plain water and snacks like jerky or those little packages of nuts or individual peanut butter packages, I've seen them in tubes. I don't know what they'll do about food, are they eating out? They'll need lots of calories to bike those miles every day, so a little research might tell you what options are available and a gift card to a restaurant, etc., could be nice. Does he have a favorite treat? Biscotti travel well and are nearly indestructible, LOL, and gingersnaps get there intact packed inside a Pringles tube, I think other cookies would travel fine that way too. Annie

Best freakin' advice my dad ever gave me: "Never LEND anyone money...instead GIVE to those in need whatever you can afford to give. In both scenarios you're not getting the money back, so the latter will at least change the way you feel about it." If there is no obligation to repay and no deadline, then it doesn't strain the relationships, which a loan ALWAYS does. And if you do get it back eventually, then it's just icing on the cake. I'm sorry for your troubles. It sounds like your hubby is being a bully and a control freak. As far as his reaction goes: personally I can't stand Dr. Phil (sorry Dr. Phil fans), but he said something once that I found very insightful, he said, "You teach people how to treat you." If you allow people insult you, you have taught them that is acceptable to do so. His reaction is totally inappropriate and you should draw the line immediately if anyone is being disrespectful to you, spouse or otherwise. There was one time when DH and I were first dating, he was flirting and teasing me about something, and in a totally playful manner I flipped him off. He got totally serious and explained to me that he was ok with that from his friends, but when it comes to relationships, he feels that both parties should treat each other with the utmost respect, and he would appreciate it if I would never do that again and he promised never to do it to me. That was a wake-up call. For ten years we have stuck by that 'code of conduct' even through many-a-heated argument, because he made it clear that was out-of-bounds. Don't let him bully you. Give him logical reasons why you made the deicion that you did, and take the high road: avoid insulting him back as it gives you credibility and shows that you practice what you preach. I would recommend changing the loan to a gift and explain that you have a right as a financial contributor to make that decision. If you get the money back from DS, then put it in a seperate account for him in case he ever needs another 'gift' in the future. That way, the future 'gift' comes out of money you never expected to have and therefore shouldn't put a strain on your relationship. Best of luck.

Perhaps the poster who said my dil is not mature enough has it right. What I said about her mother was this "I told my mother that my dil and her mother got in a fight and that my dil slapped her mother" My DIL said I dissed her mother because she would never slap her mother because her mother was a good mother. That was the diss! Believe it or not! Now neither of them are in mine or my husbands lives! I tried to be the loving mil to no avail. Did 99% of everything for their wedding, tried to make her feel welcome and then I got this...snubbed on Mothers Day, a cussing out and more snubbing, but my husband got a beautiful fathers day card and a nice present! Go figure huh

Why are you spreading gossip about your DIL to your mother?

I'd put distance between myself and you too if you were spreading nasty rumors about me slapping my mother. Once you said something like that, you'd get to know nothing about my life.

You were in the wrong. Admit it and apologize and change your ways. Learn boundaries, self control, and respect--and you won't have problems like these.

It isn't clear, to me anyway, whether it was just 'gossip' about dil slapping her mom, or whether dil actually did slap her mom, or whether dil made up the story that OP even said it.

When someone, maybe from jealousy, maybe to gain control of spouse, decides to drive a wedge between his/her spouse & the spouse's mother or father or siblings, truth is the first thing that goes out the window.
