Sorry your second surgery didn't work out. My DH no longer drives. But he had cataract surgery on both eyes last year. The doctor gave him good distance vision in one eye and good reading vision in the other. He complained a lot because he couldn't get his eyesight coordinated. He has gone back to the surgeon and also seen a Retinologist but he's still not happy with his vision. Tho they've neasured him at 20/25 and say there's nothing further to do. He does wear glasses. Hope you get better than he ended up.

Jannie, I can't imagine seeing differently with each eye. That has to be a strain. As it is I spend most of the day holding the left eye closed, so I can see clear with the good eye. By the end of the day, I have a headache, from the eye strain, I suppose. Dottie

In a very worst case scenario-wear an eye patch for the license test. Hope you get the other eye working-that would drive me nuts.

It's not unusual for one eye to take longer to heal than the other. Most often the cataracts are at different stages of growing. It can take up to 12 weeks to totally get your vision clear. My sister was just as terrified as it happened with her first cataract removal and took four months but when it cleared she could see better than she had seen since childhood.
Worst case scenario, wear sunglasses and, when you take the test, close the bad eyes. You're allowed to wear sunglasses.

No, you are not going to be a "pest." It's the right thing to do for yourself, and it's their job to do everything possible to help you get proper vision from that eye. Do you think the clinic will give you the "brush off?" I hope not. I know you are worried, but stick with it and get the help you need.

I agree, you won't be considered a "pest" if you ask a lot of questions and complain if tyou're vision isn't a whole lot better. It's their job to help you.

i don't blame you a bit for being concerned and i'd be in a panic if i'd lose my licence...

maybe you ought to get one here in mi...it was in the paper they issued one to a man who was blind...and my dad had a mi lic the entire time we lived in ca....about 25 years...

Eric is blind in one eye (not legally but almost). He cannot take the computer DL eye test but has to take the one on the wall chart. He also has a restriction on his license that he HAS to drive a car with side view mirrors on each side. Check out your state requirements, it may ease your mind. We hold our breath each time we move to another state because we never know how it will go for him! So far, GA Louisiana, and WV have all worked out okay.

You should not have to be a pest and you have valid concerns. You have to talk with the doc taking care of the post surgery follow ups. I had another problem with the second eye and I called at 11:30 at night, was told come right to the office, I'll meet you there. She lives 45 miles south of me and and the office is right across the street from me. I asked her if it could wait until morning and she said maybe but I don't want to take a chance.
My eyes are doing okay again but one is a bit blurrier than the other, I have been testing it myself and I see some tiny improvement every day. Even the first eye is still improving! I certainly hope this will be the case for you but please call or go see the Doc. Have them make absolute sure the correct lens prescription was implanted and that it is clear and not clouding. I was assured that very few of the lens cloud but it does happen on a rare occasion. I don't know about you but I am a magnet for Murphy's Law. Please keep us informed and I'll keep you on that special list for good energies and well wishes.

Good wishes for success in your efforts, Dottie: it's being assertive. Stick up for yourself, with courtesy and determination ... plus good arguments (if you can think of any). Get as good mileage as possible out of the ones that you have.

Try to avoid being a nuisance, though: don't call every day (until late in the game, having achieved no positive results anyway).

Oh Dottie, sorry to hear this, and really sorry you're stressing out. But PLEASE, for your own sake, take deep breaths and try to relax. Yes, I know it's easier said than done, but I know my old GF was instructed by her eye surgeon to calm her temper down and avoid stress because of the blood pressure issues that he told her are magnified in the eyes. True or not, I can't confirm but stress is seldom good for anyone.

Reading this it just hit me that they didn't give the depth perception test (that they used to give) the last time or two I renewed my license. But there is the flashing light test so an eye patch would impair that. I wouldn't wear one. I'd just close my eye and use the good eye. You should pass the peripheral vision test with your eyes open. I've closed an eye more than once on the tests. My one eye has always been much stronger than the other.

As for the clinic, they should be able to explain to you if this is normal or not. And whether there will be a positive prognosis for down the road.

I've often wondered about the wall charts, and whether you can use them or not. I have a much easier time with them than those electronic ones.

I usually try to go take the eye test as early as possible so my eyes aren't tired. The last time I renewed I nearly failed the test after having to drive to and from Willmar in the bright sun on the snow and it really strained my eyes. The clown there tried to say it's not sunny out when I told her that and I turned and looked out the window - not a cloud in the sky, and she went "oh, I guess it is kind of bright out there" I did pass though. Would have had no trouble if I put my glasses on but I just don't want that as a requirement, at least not yet. I often wear them when driving especially when my eyes get tired but I don't want them requiring it. Petty? Yeah, but I don't care.

Incidently, what does you eye doctor say about your ability to drive? If you do fail the vision screening you will be referred to a doctor for an assessment of your vision and whether it's safe for you to drive, and they'll then consider that opinion.
