No thanks...my Mom use to make Spam: fried, in sandwiches etc..I can't eat it to this day!!!

I love Spam. So there!

For those who love both Spam and Jello I offer this:

Spam Jello

1 large box lemon or lime Jello
1 large can Spam
1 medium onion, chopped
1/2 cup boiling water
1/2 cup ice cold water
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup sour cream
1/2 bell pepper, chopped
4 hard boiled eggs, peeled and chopped
1/4 cup relish; pickle, corn, etc.
2 stalks celery, finely chopped
Tabasco to taste

Dissolve Jello in boiling water. Add cold water, mayonnaise and sour cream to Jello. Chop Spam; add to Jello with remaining ingredients. Chill until firm. Makes 6 to 8 servings.

I do not defend or offer an explanation for why this recipe exists. But it does.

I can't believe this thread is still alive! I think the Spam Jello sounds a bit like ham salad in aspic but what turns me off more than the Spam in there are the chopped hardboiled eggs - in lemon or lime jello. GAG.

O.K. - here's another recipe from the 2008 Ohio State Fair Spam Contest:

"SPAMY APPLE CHEDDAR CORNBREAD

Vicky Victor, Madison County
Ohio State Fair Blue Ribbon Recipe
Great American Spam Championship, Great American SPAM Recipe

1 cup yellow cornmeal
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup sugar
1 large egg, beaten
1 cup buttermilk
1/4 cup butter, melted
2 small tart apples, chopped
1 (12 oz.) can Spam Lite (grounded)
1/2 cup 2 oz. shredded sharp cheddar cheese

Combine first four ingredients; make a well in center of mixture. Combine egg, milk, and butter, add to dry ingredients, stirring just until moistened. Stir in apple, Spam and cheese. Place in a well-greased cast iron skillet. Heat in 425 degree oven for 5 minutes. Remove from oven, pour batter into hot skillet. Bake at 425 degrees for approximately 25 minutes or until golden brown.

Baking temperature: 425 degrees
Baking time: 25 minutes
Yield: 9"

I've never eaten spam, but I have attended a spam-art contest (that was at the same venue that hosted a dryer-lint-sculpture show as well)

Spam Jello Salad???

I like slices of Spam fried slowly until crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. With buttered noodles, rice or grits.

If you want really gross (but tasty), take those fried slices and put them into a baked bean sandwich. Mmmmmmm.

Foie gras is a culinary orgasm (can I say that here?), but if I had to choose between foie gras and Spam as the meat I could have a quantity of, marooned on a desert island, I'd take the Spam (more versatile).

But not with lime jello.

Yeah, it kind of boggles the mind doesn't it.

Well, I don't think I ever had Spam. I don't think my family could afford it when I was growing up. I know it's a source of ridicule and these guys always make me laugh - just in case there is anybody out there who hasn't seen Monty Python:

Beware! This could REALLY gag you. Fried Spam with Grits! :-)

Thanks for reminding me to put grits on my shopping list. I've been out and have been substituting polenta, but I'm almost out of that as well. Fried Spam with grits sounds okay to me! I kind of like Spam, but I never buy it because of the sodium, as Eileen mentioned, and DB won't eat it. It's on the menu at the Hawaiian restaurant by Scott's apartment, however. I used to keep it as earthquake survival food, but I've abandoned that practice. Now I keep canned salmon instead, but I really don't like that so much either. I do have a lot of canned fava beans, in case of disaster, however.

Spam with anything sweet would be horrible IMO. I also hate pineapple on pizza, and I'm not really fond of Hawaiian cuisine, nor Philippine for that matter, as they tend to be too sweet.

When I was overseas in the South Pacific, the locals used to eat the h*ll out of Spam! Stir-fry, in eggs, in rice, grilled, even in meatloaf, and they knew what they were doing!

I had it a couple of times and it really wasn't that bad, but I've not had it since. Meat was very expensive over there so their philosophy was, "might as well make lemonade out of lemons". They learne to take something that wasn't so great on it's own and turn it into something decent.

But I never saw Spam jello!
