ideas for inexpensive countertop that goes with marble tiles

Hi there... i'm trying to picture an inexpensive countertop idea (along the lines of ikea butcherblock) that would look good with a largely white marble tile backsplash. What if the butcherblock had a dark stain instead of a natural look? Has anyone run across pictures of this combo?

I've not seen that combo but I think it would look great. I was googling Christopher Peacock today, coincidentally, and was thinking how nice the marble looked with the dark wood on this island.

What kind of look are you going for? Stainless steel would be an interesting, modern look.

Though I want to add that a dark butcher block might be a maintenance headache - scratches, etc. are going to show up much more with a dark stain than with a natural stain.

threeapples- I was trying to match existing granite in my kitchen, but the only match was 2cm, which was thinner than the existing countertops. When I told my fabricator that I was concerned about the seam in the middle from a built-up edge, he said: "No problem, we'll cut all the pieces at a 45 degree angle and the seams will be along the edges where you can't see them." Take a look at these photos and see what you think: He even showed me samples where he had done this with highly figured marble, and he just matched the cut pieces at the seam line so it looked like the pattern wrapped over the edge and down the sides as if it were a solid 4cm slab. If you can find a fabricator who has the skill to do this properly, it's amazing, and they can give you whatever perceived thickness you want without obvious seams.

Quartzite could indeed be more durable. Granite? I'm not a fan of granite in bathrooms. But I really don't much like granite at all. If you're doing a marble basket weave on the floor, I'll come over your house myself and tear out the cultured marble top if you have that installed. ; ) I would encourage you to find a nice piece of marble and go with it. Your personality seems suited to marble. A fine piece of marble? In many ways it's unlike anything else out other. At times people lose sight of the fact that it's a living space. It's not a museum. You can get into habit patterns with lotions and potions that can minimize spills on to the marble. What ever you choose...enjoy! Unless you choose cultured marble. Don't say I didn't warn you! lol

Just a BIG word of warning here. Many of the chemicals mentioned are pretty toxic and dangerous to deal with. The methods discussed should only be utilized by a VERY DIY savvy homeowner who owns the proper personal protection to use such chemicals. MEK especially is pretty nasty and should be used only as a last resort by a pro. Many times the best option would be to relax, and enjoy the developing patina!

I suggest doing your research on fantasy brown if you are considering it. It sounds to me like a marble. (Super white is another that is often billed as quartzite but is is actually usually marble.). Not that there is anything wrong with marble--I chose it for the ktichen in our last house, but I did so knowing what I was getting. Those countertop geology threads are really informative.

I know Ikea has a walnut colored laminate that would give you the dark butcher block look without the issues mom2reese brought up. I haven't ever used it, but I do like the look of the dark and the marble . . .

Mom2reese; I love the C.P. kitchen! I'm a bit worried about all the business of butcher block with the "mottled" marble. What do you think? I also love the idea of stainless IF i can get it in my budget. I do have a local tradesman who can work with me on this... i'll have to check out his prices.

Bill, good pic... that gives me a good visual w/ the dark countertops. My very first plan (before budget cuts) was to go with black granite. I'll have to check out the laminates, I hear they've come a long way.

Justnot martha; I know exactly which ikea laminate you're talking about ... i have 9 slabs in my basement which has about 80 linear feat of cabinetry in it :) (we bought the ikea out & the salesman was snarky about it, but i guess he'll live :)

any other suggestions anyone?
