School security going too far

Once again, dirtboysmom here.

I just watched a tv news segment about a school system in NY state which does not allow students to carry backpacks or purses during the school day for "security" reasons

Apparently, earlier this week a girl carrying purses was pulled out of class and questioned a school security guard about whether or not they she was having her period, in which case she would be allowed to carry a purse to class.

This is absolutely ridiculous, making young women advertise the fact that they are having their period by allowing them to carry purses only during that time of the month.

I applaud the students who started a protest against this invasion of privacy.

I have truly begun to fear for our country and our childlren's future as we have gone totally overboard in attempts to keep everyone safe from everything: RealID, shoes off at airports, etc., etc., etc. It can't be done. Let's spend our money on providing health care to those without insurance. And now I will climb down off my soapbox.

No BACKPACKS at SCHOOL!? Uh, what are they supposed to CARRY THEIR BOOKS, HOMEWORK AND SCHOOL SUPPLIES IN???Perhaps we could go back to the 1800's and carry our supplies over our backs with a big fat rope? Oh no, then the kids would be accused of attempting or planning a lynching. Maybe bandanas? My grandfather used to wrap his sanwiches in those. No, it would start a gang war.

Incidently, I think it was the same channel that I saw another program on almost 2 weeks ago... Also about back-packs, except it was announcing that some very smart man had INVENTED BACK PACKS MADE OF KEVLAR FOR PROTECTION AGAINST ALL THE FLYING BULLETS going on in schools today be it crazy lunes trying to take over the elementary or the high schoolers gone mad against each other. (Did anyine stop to think that maybe all of those scenerios is b/c our government's gone wild/"overboard" and it's affecting us all?

No PURSES!? What are girls supposed to do; "All female students come to the office and please give official registry regarding your time of month" Then they give all female students a REAL SCHOOL ID to wear at all times so that school security can scan them and check whether or not they're in code per their 'legally monthly-alloted apparel'???

Hell YES we've gone "too far" as a nation and society. Guess what people... WE... ARE THE NATION AND SOCIETY! And if we don't stand up against this we will SOON find that it's TOO LATE.

So many of us think that we "can't do anything about it" or we're too busy to, or "someone else will"...

No, the day is already upon us... Indeed approaching dawn... It is time to ACT.

My son wasn't allowed to carry a backpack all through middle school for security reasons. And he had exactly 7 minutes to get from class to locker to next class, with detentions for each tardy. Horribly restrictive and punitive, and the kids hated it! And this was a safe school! (Would have been without the ridiculous backpack regulations.)

popi We are Christians and wanted a Christian education for our kids. What I have found out though is that many of kids at this school put themselves on a "I am a better Christian than you are" pedestal and judge very harshly students that don't follow their lead. My son is more outside of the box. He skateboards instead of playing football. Listens to harder rock "Christian" music than most and is does more his own thing. We are far from wealthy and don't run with they parents who are and who have seats on the board or contribute extra money to the school. My older daughter had the same experience and she left the school. She told me that the kids that got up on stage and professed their love for and commitment to Christ were the meanest, most two faced and hardest partying kids at the school. She never fit in either. I have a concern of being able to get him to school when the weather is bad since I will have to be driving SD10 to school if he goes else where. The drive to the school that we have chosen, should he go, is about 20 minutes without snow or ice. That is something that we have to discuss. My DH says that he will find those types of people at the other school and not like it there either. I agree that he will find those types of people there but since the school is much larger he probably won't be with them the entire day nor will the mold that he is expected to fit into be so strict. I want to meet with the principal and see what they have available to address his learning disabilities. I need to speak to his special ed teacher at his current school and get her honest opinion about it. I emailed her today but have not heard back from her. I will also talk to the super at his current school and let him know why my son would be leaving and that he should take a hard look at what is being learned there about being a Christian as apposed to what is being taught. I think it's a shame.

patty - it sounds like you have done similar renos to what we have done. We haven't listed our house yet, but will be soon due to a job transfer. We live in AZ, so needs are different here. Where I come from, carpet is very common in the FR/LR/DR and bedrooms. But in AZ, tile is the way to go, so we tiled our entire house, but carpeted the bedrooms. We had the entire inside painted, including the ceilings. Walls Dunn Edwards Inside Passage, Ceilings Swiss coffee. New custom window coverings and just had new light fixtures and faucets installed. I got the light fixtures on clearance at a tent sale for a big light store here. Beautiful, for not much money. They were normally $250, I got them for $30. THe difference is amazing. So in all, we changed the flooring, painted the walls, ceiling and kitchen cupboards, new window coverings, light fixtures (for very cheap, but they are far from cheap looking) and plumbing fixtures. We've had compliments galore on the transformation and our realtor expects us to not necessarily get all our money back, but because of the neutral colours and the freshness of the home, coupled with up to date features like light fixtures, our home will most likely sell faster at a better price. It's move in ready and that's what you want. We didn't want to over-renovate for our area either and we're finished. We're not doing anything else. Instead of replacing all the appliances, offer a home warranty which will give buyer's peace of mind if an appliance konks out. Don't go to the expense of appliances. And don't do granite counters either if your area and price range does not support it. I wanted to do countertops and our realtor said it would be a waste of money for our area.

How do you deal with building inspectors that might go too far?

Has anybody dealt with an inspector passing something on rough and then failing it on final? My stairs have been in place since the start of the build, I have had several different inpsectors since the start of the project, all of which had traversed the stairs numerous times. I pass all rough inspections and the last inspector I had prior to this new guy gave the ok to drywall and put flooring on. When we finally got ready for the final inspection of the home, the new inspector (arrogant a hole) comes out and says the stairs are no good and need to be fixed. The staircase is three separte flights with two landings. The first flight the bottom step is around 8.25" and then the next three are at 7.5" , the second flight the bottom step is 5.5" and then the rest are 7.5", the next landing is divided into two landings and that step up is at 8", the next flight has the bottom step at 8" and the rest at 7.5"until the top step which is 8" also. I have figured out how to get all the stairs within approx 1/4" of each other except for the last flight. This is where there is a really big issue aside from the fact that the entire house is drywalled, painted flooring installed and that issue is that within the area of the top step of the stairs is countless electrical runs along with minisplit lines and some water lines for radiant floor. Any suggestions? There were a few other problem areas that the inspector mentioned not in relation to the stairs which have all been remedied. Upon reviewing the inspection results on the counties website, this last inspector passed the rough framing inspection (which had been approved before just had not been signed off on the card itself) and then states on the final inspection results that the stairs are no good.

Not so fast Mama Goose, each state has it’s own laws and in Maryland, there are no statue’s of limitations for a violent crime. This victim still has the right to file charges even now and is actually being encouraged to do so by some. Professor Ford has done absolutely everything she has available to her to prove that this happened, so yeah, now the burden is on him to prove her wrong, nothing unfair about that. Now why doesn’t that committee comprised of all old white men step up to the plate and show her some fairness? Oh, GloryGirl, you and I could go far together!

I saw the same kevlar backpack segment as you and you're right, it's the government trying and most unfortunately succeeding to instill fear into the general population.

If a child is determined to shoot up the school he will do it no matter what. I think people in authority are all scared of being sued.

My son was watching the Simpsons, this morning. In one scene was your founding fathers drawing up the constitution. When they came to the point about "the right to bear arms", apparently it was meant to read "the right to have bear arms". As in to have arms like a bear.

LOL.

Perhaps if that had happened you would not be in the situation you are in with students being at risk, at school.

Ok, so it's ok for the girls to have purses (where they can presumably hide weapons) on the days when they are most likely to use those weapons?? What kind of logic is that?? LOL!

Somewhat similar situation at my son's HIGH school. Yes High school where they are required to wear UNIFORMS. If you can believe that.

On Fridays they are allowed to not wear the uniform shirt but instead wear any shirt that has the school name on it (from sports or clubs or school activities). Now, apparently, it's common practice to wear those shirts on days other than Fridays, no one complained in the past. But one day at the beginning of this year they decided to have a crack down and send kids home if they weren't in proper uniform.

Wouldn't ya know it, my son was wearing his theatre tshirt. They sent him home. Explanation: uniform is for safety of students. My question: so it's ok that they're not safe on FRIDAYS??

Problem with people who work in schools, too many of them can't see past the end of their nose. It's all about power and rules instead of being about education.
