Mom Nabbed for Breastfeeding While Driving

What the HECK are some people thinking!!?!?!??!! Good GRIEF!!! AND there were other children in the car...AND talking on the cell!!!!!!!!!

"Turns out, itÂs not legal to breastfeed and drive at the same time. Genine Compton found that out the hard way when a male motorist spotted the Ohio woman chatting on a cellphone and breastfeeding one child while driving her other children to school. When police tracked Compton down, she quickly admitted the deed and was issued a citation for misdemeanor child endangerment, reports the Dayton Daily News.

That charge could land Compton in jail for up to 180 days. "She literally has the little girl on the steering wheel and I said, 'I can't believe you have that kid in your lap,Â" said the male motorist, who spoke to her on the road. She asked him if he'd like to breastfeed the child. Compton doesn't think she did anything wrong. "If my childÂs hungry, IÂm going to feed it," she told WHIO-TV.

I'm like, 'You can feed your kid when you stop.' It's like wet out here. It's full of traffic. It's ridiculous. She's got like three other kids in the car.

- Fellow motorist"

Heehee - hate to say this, but I remember what we referred to as the "Dewey Dirties"! You'll know what I mean, Ilene! Downtown for us was a drug store (old-fashioned with a soda fountain), a Dime Store (our favorite), Western Auto, a shoe store, and a couple of clothing stores. All have since gone out of business, but the drug store made THE best cherry cokes! You just can't beat fountain drinks. I don't think I could handle Alaska - 6 months of darkness and 6 months of daylight. A friend went to visit another friend there during the dark times. She was glad to get back to OKC. I would think people would suffer more SAD (seasonal affective disorder) in Alaska than anywhere else. But, boy would I love to see it. The polar bears, the grizzlies, wolves, seals, amazing how much wildlife it sustains. I hated it when folks were (and still are) killing those baby snow seals! And, I would only want to see the wildlife from a safe distance. Amazing how fast those bears can be! Our town is about 2000 population. We had a Dairy Queen, which seems to still be popular in the smaller communities. Now they have a Pizza Hut and a Sonic drive-in. The Greenlight Cafe used to be the only eatery in town back then. Gas was only 25 cents a gallon then. My sister and brother still live there. Only one grocer now, used to be two. Wal-mart is about 13 miles away and they go there a lot (Independence). I remember all the towns you mentioned. Caney, Kansas is another on Hwy 75 north. Between Independence and Neodesha they now have a 4-lane highway, have torn the old stone bridge down (OMG!). It was so beautiful rounding that curve into Neodesha right by the river dam and under the old stone bridge. Very scenic. Also had a drive-in theater, and on Wednesdays we could pile a whole bunch of people in the car and the trunk and get in for 75 Cents. One of the main reasons I moved away from there was the gossiping. Everyone knew everyone's business, and I just felt very strongly that it was wrong. When I go back and my siblings start talking about people they know, their bank accounts, their foibles, yada, yada, yado, I just quietly leave the room. I feel like it's none of my business. I love the old cemetary, though, and would like to be buried there (in an urn). It is beautiful, lots of trees, grounds well-kept, many old graves that are of interest. I used to wander thru there just to see the old headstones. My grandpa, grandma, father, and brother are there, and I'd like to be back among my family. Wonder if they gossip in the "other world"? We had chickens and lots of garden back then, too. My dad always wanted his garden. I think people gardened more then, too. Then there was a big gap in the number of folks who gardened and it has made a resurgence in the past few years. My sis and her husband don't garden anymore. Got to be too much of a burden for them. Her husband is in charge of cable television in the surrounding areas and has been with them for 40+ years. Sally works for a bank, but I think she'd rather be home. Now they have another mortgage payment to make due to the storms last year, so she is trying to get it paid off as soon as she can. She's the prettier of the two of us. Was a cheerleader, Basketball Queen, Football Princess, etc. I was the more studious type - Drama club, Speech Club, Student Paper editor, etc. You remember Tomato_Hornworm who used to be on the forum a few years back? She lives in Altoona, just a hop, skip, and a jump from Neodesha. She loves it there because she finds many more moths and butterflies than I do in the city. Sorry this was so long - just recalling all the memories of living in a small town. I always thought I was an alien cuz I always wanted to move to a bigger town. I was bullied a lot, so don't have ANY good memories of high school or grade school for that matter. Those kind of things will do that to a person. Susan

The feelings you have are what many mothers of sons feel after their marriage...if that encounter made you feel outside a circle..its because you are...I also have to wonder what mothers of daughters are telling and teaching them about in laws.... They are mothers to grown children as well and have to know how a mother to an only son must feel...its really not the same as having a daughter and no one can say it is....I have seen how my DIL's look out for their mothers best interest at the risk of breaking a MIL's heart....my oldest DIL will exchange these looks with her mother as if no one is watching...like they are collluding telepathically...it is so juvenile... They have done this around me many times in my own home...and I hate being around them....my husband berates me if I even mention this is taking place....I am planning my exit out of this marriage and feel my DIL has ruined my family....my husband has never stood by me or supported me emotionally...and having a person enter your family...a small family at that and seemingly treat you poorly will create major conflicts in a marriage if one spouse tries to ignore the others pain...just an acknowledgement is fine.. If truth be told my husband does not care for his DIL but fears speaking up about it to me....obviously we are not going to last to 40 yrs happily.... One thing that parents of a son will do is extend themselves for fear of losing him completely...you say you have heart to hearts with her...but this is probably not the best move....a DIL will use information you give them against you later...in arguments with your son...I was told this by many women in the past....and believe it...my sister created a lot of tension with my DIL based on things that she would tell her when I was not around... We also extended ourselves by buying vaca property with my son and his wife....big mistake 10 yrs later....my son is now behaving more like an unhappy bus. partner....sending emails telling my husband he has not contributed as much financially...wanting to sell which has been my view all along...but my husband did not take my advice and prediction and now sees but really doesn't see... My advice would be to accept the fact that your DIL is going to be a mamas girl....and you will likely feel the chill more than once...do not try to have something that may never be there...you have to remember..she came to your family as an adult...she has no back story with you...your son may not be willing to speak in your defense.... I wish I knew then what I know today...life for me would be so much easier...now I have the stress of having a son, but not really...and having the stress of a controlling husband who chastises me for being hurt...insisting I deal with issues like he does..which is to repress....2 GS's I only see when there is a free spot somewhere....a truly unhappy existence at the moment....I am in the process of letting go as well

My neighbor turned me in to the cops!

Everyone on our street gets along which is really fortunate. We watch each others houses, take trash when someone is on vacation. Heck, whenever there is a holiday we all figure who is home and who is not and join forces to help out. It is really nice. Each year we have a block party and it is next weekend. The only problem there has ever been is this one neighbor who is actually really, really nice. He for some reason just thinks he is the czar and in charge of everthing. He is always there to help but sometimes he is in the way. Like when we sold our boat at our yard sale (oh, when we have a sale he likes to stop by and say "what, another sale?", we only have one a year if at all). He came down and proceeded to speak with the buyer about how to use the boat, where to go, what to do, etc. You would think he was selling the boat. Our other neighbor came over too but he was helping us hook it up and assisted my dh with testing the motor. This guy just has an opinion about everything and instead of telling the homeowner he nags and nags the other neighbors about what he wishes the other owner would do. Or he will tell other to do the things he wants done. Today he was looking for pipe tape because one yard has a funky sprinkler head. And no, he did not ask the owner if he could fix it. So here is the update. Last night dh went to the czar, whos own truck was blocking the sidewalk because it is so long. Dh told him he might want to pull his truck in because it is violating parking laws and probably ADA laws. He told him that we got a ticket for our trailer and that someone in our court turned us in. Our neighbor asked why dh was telling him this. Dh told him it was because everyone thinks he did it. Guy says that is BS. Dh comes home. It was a nice evening and other neighbors started coming out to chat like we all do. This guy comes all the way to my neighbors house to pull her aside and tell her that we are mad at him. She had to answer the phone so she could not chat more. Then he goes back to chat with his direct neighbor, then another. Eventually he heads back to us. He says that he did not do it and since we "acused" him of doing this he is going to find out who did. I told him we did not acuse him at all. I told him that because of his past behavior, his current complaints made over the course of several days, his being in front of my house on phone an hour before ticket... it is simply guilt by association. I told him that maybe he did not do it, but we all have no other choice because of his constant medeling. He shouted something about how when he comes around the corner he is going to hit the trailer (it is no wider than his own truck). My dh blasted back telling him that if he would not fly around the corner he would not have a problem. That was when his wife walked by with her dogs on leash. She kept going. I told him he just needs to stop his behavior and knock it off. He left. We spoke with several others some more. What is really sad it that if he really did not do it, everyone thinks he did. Everyone said they just want him to knock it off. So.... this morning my dh is out front. The wife drives up to chat. She said she was sorry for the way her dh acted. She said she asked if he did it and he said no. (Isn't it interesting that his own wife had to ask if he did it?!) My dh explained why everyone thinks he did it and she said she knows he medels but that he does not like to get into fights with anyone. My dh told her that he may not like to fight but he is a #$@ stirer instead. If he has a problem he needs to tell the person, not tell everyone else. She totally understood where we are coming from. We told our immediate neighbor that we would feel bad if we found out he did not actually do it, and then have to apologize. But our apology would come with a note that he needs to change his behavior because that is why he is in this trouble to begin with. Know what she said? She said, "But we all know he did it!" I just laughed. As for this guy looking for pipe tape. He asked my son, who was playing outside, if we had any. Dh told me to take some over because that is what we would normally do. We are not going to start some war. We have to live here and are not going to let a medeling neighbor ruin it. We are going to live like always. And next time he does something I think we will all be more active about telling him to knock it off. As for the dog thing. His dog is a well trained, very sweet dog. She is old but the kids love her. But it does annoy everyone when she pees on our flowers and goes in our garages. So last night when my dh mentioned that this guy violates laws all the time, especially with his dog running around, hopefully he listened. It is so easy for a street to get into a fight and everyone not get along. I think we are all determined to be friends and I think with all of us staying on top of him he will stay in check. Sometimes it takes one family to stand up to get all the others to stand together. On a funny note, our direct neighbor's dog poops on our side of our shared grass area. We just flick it back to her side and laugh. She is a super neighgor and this is how we have decided to deal with it. We don't think she sees him do it, probably thinks it is amazing how he somehow only poops on her side. lol

some people hate to read-- having so much in your description itself is a turn off to them and some of your information is repetitive... I agree that you have a lovely vista of the lake--but you mention it in almost every paragraph...that is just overkill to me... School info is always helpful because transfers might want to know that info you might mention what type of insulation you added, how large the water heaters are and if they are gas or electric, mention that architectural roof lowers ins premiums (at least in my area) regarding what your friend said about the value of your media room--if you counted that 30K into the price of your house, you probably need to readjust most people who can afford to spend that much money would probably want to make their own choices--not use yours--and media equipment has a short shelf life--in that something new/cutting edge/highly rated is old-hat in 6 mo... frankly I would like shot of master closet (if it is large and has storage)...and more shots of your kitchen...and other storage areas like maybe in garage...people love storage... you have multiple shots of seating area that frankly most people would not use daily unless they had a very large family and/or hosted lots of big parties...but people use their kitchen every day so add more of kitchen...put in shots of other bathrooms as well... take a shot of what you would see SITTING in the breakfast room -- better close view of the outside area show that the kitchen is not as closed in as the picture makes it appear the master bath shot with both mirrors is not that great--take it from an angle or show the master shower closeup--you have two of sink area I might consider moving the bed in master bedroom so that it is on wall facing the windows/view-- it looks very crowded on the wall it is on--makes the room which I guess if fairly large feel cramped... take a shot from behind the couch in your family room looking through the French doors over the patio deck to the lake...that looks like a wonderful view...that is definitely a selling point to highlight you might consider showing the parking area for 8 cars that you mention as well as your dock-- show the lovely patio area under cover down by the lake--only a portion of it shows in the large shot looking back at the house-- frankly that outside stair case is pretty intimidating since it is so high--a family with young children or older members might consider it too challenging--I would omit it from your set and let them see AFTER they get to the house you do have photos that aren't really that attractive because they were taken in winter and foliage was dead-- update ALL photos or omit the ones that are from past season...your front door photo could use some colorful plants in pots by front steps as well--and take it from little closer in... I like your colors and you have it well staged--it is a lovely home --I don't want my comments to come across as too critical--they are my opinion--that's all

WOW! I wonder if she would feel the same way if she had had an accident and killed her children. A hungry baby can wait the couple of minutes it takes to drive her children to school. I hope she gets a judge who gives her one very serious lecture.

OH MY GOSH!!!!! I thought she was nursing a tiny baby...that doesn't know the word NO!! This child is at least 18 months!!! Holy Buckets!! What if that TODDLER would have grabbed the wheel?!?!?!

Sorry....this is just stupid, she DOES need to spend some jail time or kids being taken away for a couple of days!!! She doesn't think an air bag is do any damage to the child........I think she needs to see what it has done to some ADULTS!

This just blows my mind.

It is the height if stupidity. I can't imagine talking on the phone when you are feeding a baby. I get upset when moms are om their cells in the grocery store and have babies or kids with them. They are missing lots of opportunity to interact with the kids. Am I the only mom who enjoyed coming out of the grocery store and pushing the cart very fast as I said to DS "Wheeeeee!"?

Let her breast feed in jail for 6 months. Ban her from using a cell phone for a couple years. That would be a start.
lilliepad

I think it was careless to say the least but I don't think she deserves the axing she is getting from everyone. For one she was not cited for breastfeeding her child while driving but for child endangerment and for the baby not being properly restrained.By the way,the baby is 1 year old according to the news report I saw. There was no mention that she was talking on her cell phone. Her beef was that someone in a car beside her saw her breastfeeding the baby and called the police on HIS cell phone and reported that she was breastfeeding her child while driving down the street, not that the child was not restrained. The officer never actually saw her "in the act" according to the interview I saw on the evening news. She did admit that she was breastfeeding while driving. She could have denied it,then it would have been her word against the person who reported her and she probably could have gotten out of it,but at least she was honest!
I'm sorry, but I have a confession.32 years ago I lived in the country,25 miles from town.As I was driving into town for an appointment with my 4 month old, colicky, hungry, screaming baby that could only be pacified by being latched on to mommies boob,I did just that and drove all the way to town.It was a remote highway, not much traffic so I was not concerned that it was probably not the safest thing to do.Only that my baby was hungry and I didn't have time to stop and feed him,a task that required at least 45 minutes.I did stop as I came into the edge of town and put him back in his car seat so maybe I get some points for that.So......I guess I am a horrible, stupid, ignorant, idiot of a mother too! Haven't any of you ever done something that when you thought about it later realized you could have possibly been putting your child in danger? You know, one of those "What If" moments!
intherain
Sorry, Lilliepad, but with all the knowledge we've been given about the importance of safety in vehicles, there is absolutely NO excuse for doing what she did. I am one that gets LIVID when I see a child in a car next to me that is not restrained. This has nothing to do with breastfeeding or how old the child is. It's about not having the child properly restrained. Talking on the cell phone is just the icing on the cake.
susan_on
Intherain is right. There has been a lot of education about safety in the 32 years since you did it. Also, there were no airbags then, and the baby being that close to an airbag that could be deployed is a very frightening thought. The other thing is, that you feel that it's something that "when you thought about it later you realized that you could have possibly put your child in danger", but this lady does not have that awareness. In fact, she rejects that notion altogether.
colleenoz
Sorry, Lilliepad, I agree with those who say breastfeeding while driving is totally irresponsible. Had there been an accident, and the airbag deployed, the child would now be in a box waiting for the funeral. I too have driven distances with a screaming child, and just put up with it until I got to a safe place to stop and do whatever needed to pacify my baby. 25 miles is what, a half hour?

She is beyond stupid...How do you steer a vehicle with an arm full of baby and the other hand on the cell phone?
