Finished up the bead board wallpaper project

I was getting ready to send these photos to my son in Iraq, so he could see all the changes I've accomplished since he left the country, and I thought I'd update with everyone here as well.

I stripped off all the old wallpaper in my bath, and just finished hanging new bead board wallpaper instead, then put up new chair rail and finally got it all painted. I don't have any "before" pictures, but believe me, it was very outdated and needed a change! I couldn't furnish photos of the work in progress, since I was working solo with just my two Westie's to supervise and stick their noses into everything I was doing. Good thing it was white paint!

This is going into the bath rooms. DH's separate sink area is off to the right of the window and the door leads to an enclosed toilet room. On the left is a two person shower, and past that, the door to my little private sink and tub area that's shown in the first picture.

This is all adjacent to the much discussed yellow bedroom, where my next project is to lengthen and raise the sheers, but everything else is done, done, done....maybe?

Ooooh you're the yellow & blue BR! LOL I'm slowly getting all the names & spaces here connected.

The beadboard looks fabulous! Did the painting go easily? That's brave of you to have it right next to the tub! Do you foresee ny problems with moisture there? How does the painted look compare to the unpainted look in 3D?

I'm full of questions, of course!

I have seen really convincing beadboard wallpaper right here on GW. However, when I was at Lowes awhile back and looked at their brand it looked awful and cheap. It was not heavy and did not look as though it would take paint well. Based on that I would advise to go with the heaviest paper you can find. Have you ever used anaglypta? It is meant for uneven walls and comes in a variety of heavy, embossed patterns.

Jacked up wallpaper removal - help with ruined wall

If that wall paper was put up without primer can be pretty much impossible to remove. The builders of my mom's home did that. She wanted to put up new wallpaper but could not get the old stuff off. She primed over it and put new stuff over. You could try renting a wallpaper steamer and try, but still might be impossible. You have to do a skim coat of drywall mud and sand smooth to fix the spots that are all ripped up. There are lots of good videos on YouTube on how to fix the mess it's tricky to do well. Ask me how I know. (I spent hours fixing some spots I ripped up the paper of sheetrock trying to get it right) Be sure to prime. Were you planning on wallpaper or paint on those walls?

I really like the console sinks. (And I hope all these pictures come throught!) if you can swing getting one of these (and they come in diff styles, sizes, gold/black/chrome/ or white or black marble) I'd get one. another console shot and Picture frame trim molding on the inside of board/batten wainscot. This was painted in a glossy finish. If you do black, so at least a semi-gloss i photoshopped your paper onto this taller wainscot done in a more refined beadboard finish. you'd ned the gold metal though. this chrome does nothing w/that wallpaper you've picked. Here's nother photoshop of that black marble/gold console from my previous comment. Another angle. Put in the paper above the black wainscot. They have a black/white marble mosaic floor. I'd prob do the black marble basketweave flooring w/this combo. I have it in my bathroom with a gold schluter metal edge (to seperate it from the other flooring). here's a close up of it wouldn't this black marble look killer w/the black wainscot?? I did another one, below: I did photoshop your paper onto this picture w/the black tile wainscot. I really like this. (what is your flooring going to be? Pick that first) What do you think of this one? I'd still like it better w/the console sink, and I think I like the gold better, but this is very pretty. If you wanted the white wainscot, here a shot w/similar type of paper above it, white marble basketweave floor tile and the gold mirror/sconces. I don't like this vanity. This wainscot is a board and batten, a double pattern. this one would be eaiser to do. Just a simple rail and stile layout w/a piece of chair rail molding on top. (to figure this out it's basic math to determine the spacing and size of your molding. plenty of how to's and tutorials online) I found a lighter green color w/a console sink so I shopped in your paper, mirror/sconces. This is a bit more vintage/traditional. but I wanted you to see it w/the lighter green color. So here are some colors you can look at. you mentioned it was teal or green base, so either go w/those colors or find a black with the green or blue undertones. for example, this DE color Midnight Spruce is actually a black, but w/a deep green undertone Looks great w/the paper and the gold and marble sink. I gave some other dark teal/green undertones in the corner if you want something lighter: Raccoon Fur and Cheating Heart are both BM blue/blacks. The 4 colors at the bottom are either the green or the blue/teal tones. You could actually paint the ceiling w/any of these colors, even if you decide on a black wainscot. The blue or green ceiling paired w/a cool gold light would look very nice what about this look? I love the thick black baseboard. So you could do the entire thing in your paper, or just do the one wall in the paper, or do the whole room in the black wainscot w/the paper above. But I prefer this type of sink and the marble mosaic floor. (this one, or some of the others)

Beautiful rooms, they are so fresh and bright feeling, all ready for spring and summer. Pretty blue paint, and your yellow bath looks almost like mine, we put up beadboard, yellow paint and I made a valance just like yours in a different yellow fabric. Your beadboard is wallpaper, what a great idea, turned out really nice.

You did a wonderful job!!!! I doubt you'll have any problem with moisture + wallpaper. I have it in my bath and it's just fine. I still can't get over what a beautiful bedroom you now have. You really are a good listener and learner. And, yes, thank your soldier son for taking good care of his country.

Oh, it is so pretty. Magazine worthy for sure. Love that little vase of daisies in the corner of the tub. The rooms are fabulous. Great job. When would you like to come help me? LOL

Nanny, both rooms look just wonderful! I love what your addition of blue did to the bedroom, and your beadboard gives both rooms extra charm. Great work and definitely magazine pretty!

I would like to second Moonkat's great questions. I've gotten up my first two shortie strips and am anxious to know about the painting.

Thank you, ALL of you, for your thoughtful tips and great decorating advice! I tried hard to learn from you and adapt this room to suite our taste and still conform to the home's older southern Low Country style, and think I succeeded.

I'm still debating about building cornices, which I would cover in white fabric, for over the window and door areas, but overall, I'm delighted with the warmth of this room.

Moonkat and Oceanna, the painting of the wallpaper didn't alter it much. When the paint was wet it looked as though the shadow of the beads had receded, and I didn't like that, but once the paint dried it looked normal again. It didn't even change the textured feel of the vinyl. I used a satin finish paint, and applied it with a thicker nap roller designed for semi-smooth to rough walls, thinking that the longer nap would help get the paint into those indentations the beading makes. I used a brush at the edges to make sure that all the indented parts were covered.

I'm not worried about moisture in the tub area, I had paper here before and it held up beautifully through the antics of a splashing, frolicking grandson who I raised for 12 years. I've got cherished photos of him in this tub with bubbles practically overflowing on the floor...it was his favorite play area. Those days are long over, (he graduates next year.....sigh), the tub only gets used by me, and my splashing days are over!

Yayagal and Allison, thanks for mentioning my DS. This is his 4th, and hopefully last tour over there. He just got married a month before he left, and I know his wife would love to have him home, too.

And Brutuses, thanks for your invitation, but I've seen the photos of your new home, and your doing a beautiful job with that, all on your own! It's stunning, I especially love your new master bath.

Thanks, Nanny. That's good to know about the paint looking a bit scary when wet and better when it's dry. I won't worry, then.

Gorgeous! And I'm happy to hear your review re. water splashing on paper, as I'm considering doing something similar in my daughters' bathroom. I tried my hand at the wallpaper beadboard in Chloe's room today (top half is another wallpaper). What a joy the beadboard stuff was to work with! And much easier than the mdf beadboard that I've installed in the past!
