It's one of my "green" goals of 2008 to eliminate use of paper towels and to use my miracle and flour cloths or sponges for everything. DH is resistent to eliminating paper towels and told me I was getting a paper towel holder for Valentine's Day (luckily he was just kidding). Until our current supply of paper towels is used up (and I'll buy no more), I'm keeping them under the kitchen sink. I do see that DH is learning to reach for the flour cloths which I keep draped over the kitchen sink and in a basket on the counter.

I keep my roll on the counter near the cooktop. I use one of those vertical metal holders that are decorative but practical. I don't use a ton of them, but when I need a paper towel, I want quick access to it.

Magnetic holder on the far side of the fridge. The good part in the new kitchen is that it's virtually invisible from everywhere else in the room unless you're standing right next to it, but it's still out and readily available. Worked out great!

We attached our paper towel holder to the bottom of our wall cabinet closest to the sink. It's been there for years, and I find it very convenient and fairly unobtrusive. Of course, we don't have plugmold or under cabinet lights; if we did, we'd have to carefully locate it under the cabinet, in between those items. Our fifteen year-old cabinets are oak, and the paper towel holder is also made of oak.

Well, I considered tucking mine out of sight, but realized it was not for me. I want them close at hand when I need them, so they're right by the sink.

I buy the select-a-size ones and the vertical holder I have lets me pull them off the role cleanly, one-handed.

I have to admit, I thought about stowing them away when I snapped my completed kitchen pics, but opted to leave everything on the counter that I keep on there and use every day.

I use microfiber cloths for washing/drying dishes and most clean-up jobs, but sometimes you just need to use a paper towel, IMO!

After we remodled we decided to keep the paper towels in a drawer next to the sink. It took about a month to get used to the new location but it's now been 20 years and no regrets.

In a drawer next to the cleanup sink. I usually know in advance that I'll need them and put the roll on the counter - drying meat, Windexing counters occasionally, raw chicken prep cleanup, floor spills cleanup.

Here's another one with a decorative freestanding wooden paper towel holder on the counter. My dad made it for us! He's very pleased that we have 4 things he made for us, in our new kitchen - paper towel holder, banana tree, a little wooden basket (I keep my Equal packets in it), and the napkin holder on the dining room table. He does woodworking for a hobby and is always pleased when he can make something practical that is just beautiful and will be used.

Good grief, I am just starting to panic about that. I have always kept my paper towels attached to the underside of my cabinet nearest the sink. Now I'm getting undercabinet lights (skinny fluorescent tubes)and have to figure out where to put the paper towels vs. the lighting in that cabinet. Argh. Hmmm - one more question for my g.c., who is a doll but already thinks I'm nuts. Thanks for reminding me about this: I used to think that people who obsessed about their paper towels were also nuts. I HATE those holders that stand on the counter.

We always had ours on a horizontal hanger - for a long time it was magnetic on the side of the fridge. We did NOT think we liked the countertop vertical kind and didn't think they would work to let you just have one towel at a time. But in our nice new kitchen, the fridge side is no longer an option and we didn't want to drill into the underside of our nice new cabs (and get too close to the undercab lights). So we decided to try the on counter type. Got a nice little stainless looking one from Lowe's that has some rubber comb mechanism that lets only one towel off at a time but is still easy enough to pull more if you want them.

We LOVE it! It's portable. I can take it to the table or wherever I need it. It's tucked in a corner near the sink - looks fine. And I can change the roll without unscrewing anything. Many of the countertop ones I tried, you had to unscrew a finial that was a pain to get on and off (would have driven me crazy, so check that out).

Anyway, I highly recommend the on counter type now. And soonermagic, good for you for going green. We are pretty earth conscious but on the paper towel front, we're the worst. Is a flour cloth just a thin rag? And is the miracle cloth a microfiber thing?

soonermagic, your little basket is just so cute. We've been paper free in the kitchen for about 5 years and it's so nice to be able to use as many cloths as you want and then toss them in the wash.

Ours are currently in a stack on the raised portion of the island but I'm going to find the perfect little basket for the new kitchen.

sooner, i love the basket, too! i'm one of the throwbacks who still uses an undercabinet holder. no plugmold or u/c lighting to worry about. i bought a simple stainless one from bed, bath, beyond to match my sink and pulls.
