Did I hang this mirror too high?

Originally I was going to use the small lamp on top of the dresser, so I thought the mirror seemed right. But then i found this nice floor lamp and I feel like the mirror might be a tad high. What says GW? The 2nd pic was taken from a slightly lower angle, so that is not helping things.

Still need a mat for that calendar page, so ignore that :-) And I don't think the yellow pillow will stay (actually, just trying out fabrics).

Just add a vase or candles or something on the left side and it should be at the perfect height.

IMO it's a tad high, but as mentioned above you can probably hide that my breaking up the empty area.

You didn't ask and I know unsolicited advice is... unsolicited, but would the lamp still be functional in the corner? (e.g is there space for the base, would the cord reach, etc.) From the top of the dresser to the left, I see rectangle, circle, circle, rectangle (frame, mirror, lamp, poster) and that patterning seems to stick out way more than the mirror, to my tactless eyes. :)

Have somebody hold a flashlight at different levels pointing down at you while you lean into the mirror and imagine that you're trying to get an eyelash out of your eye. If you are working in your own shadow, the lights are too high. This is why sconces, one on either side of the mirror, are better for best lighting/visibility.

I think the problem with the mirror is that it's not exactly the right shape and size for that space; also, the color of the frame clashes a bit with the wall but also blends in so it's hard to see the details. Usually you would have a mirror like that above another piece of furniture, such as a dresser or table. A longer, full-length mirror or one of those large "leaning" mirrors would look better on that wall, or else the current mirror with a small table beneath it, depending on what else is on that wall already and what function you want the mirror to serve. Something else to think about: the "use what you have" decorator (Lauri Ward?) cautions against having a "roller coaster" -- things hung at different heights around a room. That is, she says the tops of similar objects, such as artwork, should all be aligned within a room.

I do agree that it looks a bit high, and usually start around the 30" mark when possible. It depends on the chandelier itself, and you never want to hang too low if it's a wide piece for fear of bumping heads! I don't have advice on how to rewire/add length other than consult an electrician, but if you add taller chairs and a tall centerpiece, that could help with the disconnect. Try a cluster of tall/varied height candlesticks or vases in the same color/finish, and maybe add a runner to complete the look. Good luck!

Yep....I'd move the dresser about 8 inches further toward the air vent... move the chair about 6 inches in the same direction and put the lamp on the other side of the chair.
That will get the floor lamp away from the rest of the stuff, get the mirror away from "centered" over the chest and break up the geometric thing avesmore mentioned.
Glad to see you have not messed up the brasses on that lovely dressers....it just looks right with that style of pulls.

I'm always open to unsolicited advice, so no worries :-)

I could maybe scootch the chair over a tad to get the lamp on the other side of it, but there is no way the dresser can go over 8 inches. It could maybe go an inch or two at the most. It's hard to tell, but the entrance to the room is over there by the air vent and if the dresser is over too far it just feels cramped and "blocked" as soon as you walk in the door. It's been suggested that the entire room be flip-flopped, and that would definitely take care of the problem (among others). But I plan on leaving the layout as-is, at least for the time being. I need to get this room finished; there is baby on the way :-) But yes, I can try the lamp on the other side of the chair.

It sounds like maybe I should finish "accessorizing" the dresser before making any final decision on the mirror.

I would just lower the mirror until it's just a tad lower than the top of your art to the left. Then, I think you don't have to move any furniture.

marg411 - the lamp is from Target. I think on their website it's called "Oil Rubbed Bronze Apothecary Lamp". They have it in store too. It does not adjust up and down, FYI. It's cute though :-)

andreadeg - Thanks! The paint is Behr's Havana Cream. It's a little more lemon-y than buttery (I had wanted a soft buttery yellow) but I still like it a lot.
