Good kids

I've posted, about our move to a downstairs Apt. The fellow who is moving to a vacant upstairs, so we can have his downstairs, is director of our local youth center, and is obviously well liked and respected by the kids, there. Yesterday, Dick was moving most of his stuff, and 8 kids showed up to help him. They made quick work of the job, and he must have mentioned about our coming move (now Tuesday) and they came up and said they would move the mountain of boxes we had piled up in the dining area. Again they made quick work of carrying all of those boxes down to the now, empty Apt. They wouldn't take any money, so I ordered Pizza's and Mt. Dew to be delivered. Figuring the least I could do was feed these terrific kids. I had to laugh when I offered paper plates, and one boy said the slices go directly from box to mouth. A couple of them even gave me a hug. I am so touched. Good Kids!!!!

Although I agree about it not being necessary for health reasons to by ultra-hygenic, I don't think it will necessarily reduce allergies. My father had another job, but he also basically ran a farm. We had cows most of my childhood as well as chickens, geese, pigs, etc. We always had at least 1 dog. I would lay down in the straw with the calves. We played with the chickens and dressed the geese up in doll clothes. The only person who ever told us not to get dirty was my grandmother who was convinced we would get hookworm (we never did). We would walk down to the barn barefoot. I have all kinds of allergies and have since childhood. I'm allergic to all fur (every animal I've ever encountered) as well as dust, and a bunch of pollens. I also had severe eczema and still have it on my hands. The allergies first developed when I was six. Oh, I also have asthma. My sister doesn't have the allergies but does have what appears to be Celiac Disease. DH had every allergy known to man. He grew up in the suburbs but his family had a weekend/summer place on a lake where the kids ran wild. If his mother was the same then as she is now I doubt she worried about them getting dirty. He was lucky, he outgrew his allergies. I don't think a little dirt will hurt you, but I wouldn't count on it to protect you either. I don't use bleach on anything and don't "disinfect" surfaces (well, except when I've handled chicken). I do use hand sanitizer after taking public transportation or if the flu is going around the office.

Do you have boys or girls? My girls have a Barbie exercise/dance video that they love. Shows them some cute dance moves, but like you said...they have to follow instructions to do it and it really is good exercise. I've even done it with them on occasion. :) It's an older video, but still available at Walmart...or atleast that's where I got it. Jennifer Love Hewitt is in it....she was about 11 or 12 at the time....so that tells you how long the video has been out!

Bumble, you might be my DD's biological mom LOL. Her (self imposed) goal this summer is to cook more "real meals." She already bakes a lot, with some supervision, and makes pancakes independently. Her real obsession these days is duct tape. She has made a variety of wallets, purses, etc. She usually makes at least one a day. She has probably 25 rolls of various colors and patterns at the moment. I honestly don't think I could make one of those wallets myself, and I'm fairly crafty...or used to be! She has her own glue gun. Tish, like you say, she's not a great speller or much of a reader but she can read complicated directions or a recipe and figure it out no problem, so she's all set!

Try starting with a clean slate. Your son is at an age of self accountability and should make decissions based on right or wrong, not on what his parents want. Of course parents want thier children to make the right decisions, so please don't take that the wrong way. My suggestion is you sit him down and tell him all the good things you have told us about him, let him know what a bright individual you think he is and that you know he wants to be trusted. Tell him right now he has lost some or all of you and your husbands trust due to his recent action. Tell him you want to give him the opportunity to earn that trust back and you are wiping the slat clean and starting fresh to give him the opportunity to earn your trust back. Explain that he has chores because he is part of your family and in every family every one has to take part in chores so it is not left to just mom and dad to work and do all of the house work. Besides next year he will be 18 years old and can get a place of his own, then he will have to do ALL the housework with no one to split the duties with. Tell him you are giving him an opportunity to regain your trust by allowing him to start fresh. Lay down your rules again, but this time in writing and have him sign the agreement stating he understands your rules and is willing to abide by them as long as he lives in your household. In return he will experience more freedom by regaining your trust through making good decisions for himself. Put the ball in his field. He is after all 17, one more year and he can live on his own, he needs to be treated more like an adult then a juvenile. Concequences for adult decisions can be far more drastic then what you can hand out. Once he lives on his own, he will make the decisions for his own household and his outlook will be different. For him to only now, at 17, to be acting out, he has done better then most teens who have acted out at a much earlier age. Much credit to you both as parents. He may be struggling between teenage and adult years in his own mind. It's just a suggestion, toss it if you don't agree.

I know about good kids. When we had a couple feet of snow in January, two boys (brothers) up the street went around clearing driveways. Offered money, but they said "No."

Thankfully there are still good kids and it is good to be recognized and appreciated. Your pizza and Mt. Dew will encourage them to be helpful to others. Good for you for doing that.

I had to get a new battery for my car last Friday. I went to Advance Auto. The (very) young man who I would probably call a boy, was so polite and helpful and humorous, it made it a pleasant way to spend money!

I noticed while I was there that even the customers were pleasant, and there was inter-action between every one.

That is the kind of business I like to do business with.

There's a youth group and a group of people that would both get my support! Good for you, and good for them too. Za and Dew, you know what they like! :)

Also sounds like they have a great mentor there, which is great to hear too. This is one of those events that's so nice in so many ways.

Many hands do make light work and a day brightener like this sure removes stress from a move, doesn't it? I'm so pleased for you Dotmom. How much is left?

That is so heartwarming to hear. A really good youth group can be the best thing for young people, and when they can learn to so willingly help out others, they are a blessing to everyone they know.

That should make your move on Tuesday go very smoothly. You must be feeling very releived and that day will have a lot less stress.

Some teens in the local high school formed a club that helps seniors and shut ins with grocery shopping, leaf raking and snow shovelling. It is headed by one of the teachers. If a kid gets in trouble and needs discipline, he/she gets assigned to join the club and do "community service". Kills two birds with one stone- gets good kids together to enjoy each others companies and provides a way to set bad kids straight.

Jannie, I think that is terrific. When some kids do this type of service, it helps them to become aware of people who have limitations, and maybe helps them to think of someone else besides themselves.
