Yes I saw the announcement on the web today...Geez do you think it was that cockroach platter they had in their Sept issue that helped do them in? It's a shame. I wonder what will happen to my subscription. I was looking forward to the November issue too!

I'm really sorry to hear this. I freelanced there one summer, working on a huge cookbook project. In addition to what a loss it is for readers, a whole lot of lovely, smart, talented people are now out of a job.

Joann, if you're as unlucky as I am you'll get some magazine that you have absolutely no interest in. That has happened to me more than once when magazines fold.

Several years ago I got a letter about a new magazine and if you subscribed right away you had a chance for a really nice gift, I subscribed, got a letter apologizing that they were not going to be able to publish after all....I had sent no money. The next day I received a Wiiliams Sonoma multipot from them, having won the prize. I use it a lot. That time I was lucky.

I had subscribed to Gourmet for many years and recently unsubscribed. It just wasn't nearly as good a magazine as it had been. Still I hate to see it fold.

I never was too fond of Gourmet, but feel sorry for those who have lost their jobs as a result of this. Hopefully, Bon Appetit will hold the course of what it is, rather than try to become more like Gourmet if they "absorb" some of the Gourmet subscribers.

That being said, I thought this latest (Nov) issue of Bon Appetit used a lot of extra pages on some two-page close up photos of Garnet Yam Puree on p. 120, 121, and Cornbread Stuffing with Andoille, Fennel & Bell Peppers on p. 108, 109, AND Mock Mincemeat Pie on p. 140, 141 to name three. I'd rather have more recipes and smaller photo examples than each two page spread showing one photo of the recipe indicated.

I agree I really loved this mag years ago but recent years i felt were lacking.

I'm in the minority, I guess. (No surprise there.)

I used to loathe Gourmet for being so high-brow, as if it were written for millionaires. I loved Bon Appetit because it seemed to be for those of us who wanted to cook real food with ingredients (as opposed to "Dump and heat"), but didn't assume everyone had truffles, foie gras and duck in our fridge as a matter of course. Then Barbara Fairchild took over BA and it became less about food and more about stroking her ego. Meanwhile, Ruth Reichl took over at Gourmet and it became more "real." After subscribing to BA for over 20 years, I cancelled my subscription and started getting Gourmet.

In the last two years, however, they have both lacked substance. I don't like when the articles read like ads.

I'll miss it. And I'm glad they are keeping the recipes on Epicurious.

The November issue is on the stands, I just bought it. Big surprise, it has a turkey on the cover. It's the last issue apparently.

A few years ago, they devoted an issue to Montreal, I have 2 copies of it, it was
a great reference for locals and tourists.

We just got that November issue in our mail, for some unknown reason; we aren't subscribers. Complete with a plethora of subscription forms. I am hoping that the decision to close was made after this package went to print...and they are not trying to eek out every last cent that they can from unsuspecting potential customers.

I listened a couple of days ago to an interview with Ruth Reichl on NPR. She said they (the staff) didn't know the November issue was the last one until it was already finished. The decision to cease publication caught them by surprise.

Her comment was that if she had known there would be no forthcoming issues, as editor she would have published a much different November edition.
