Can't believe it is almost 5PM and I'm starting this thread!!! It is Friday isn't it? I'm retired so can't be counted on to be sure! LOL

Not a lot for me this weekend. Meredith is flying to Halifax to attend the convocation of several friends of hers, Clive and Doug are going to the cottage to build a new sea wall and Sara and I are "hanging out" here in Oakville.

Tonight we'll drive Meredith to the airport and then Clive and I will go to the local pub for a bite.

Tomorrow Sara and I are going shopping and then out for dinner. Sunday she and I will go to the Farmers Market, make sauerkraut and probably can some English style pickled onions. Her first intro to canning!

TGIF everyone!

Another busy week here between work.... I'll be nice and just stay stuff. I'm REALLY glad this week is over with.

Tonight I'll be on the phone with family ironing out our plans for my DN graduation and TG. This has turned into a big timing mess for everyone, not sure how it will all work out but I hope for the best. Everyone wants to see him before he leaves for his Base...I'm sure he will be deployed too.

Have a couple of things to do for my DS at her new place in the morning then I'm free to do as I want. Have plans to go to October Fest Saturday evening. Cold beer, good food, and of course the chicken dance. LOL That's about it besides the routine chores.

Sharon, have fun with Sara! I'm curious about that sea wall, sounds like a big project.

I'll be clinking to y'all in about an hour.

Sharon, I chide my retired friends about their days - it doesn't matter to them if it is Monday or Saturday - they're still retired!

I hope Sara like canning - sounds like fun - and who doesn't like pickled onions? (Says the pickle fiend).

DH sprained the top of his foot so no ping pong for him for awhile - wah. I know he will play as soon as he feels better though. Can't keep a stubborn man down. My playing has improved greatly since I started playing actual games. {{!gwi}}

All kinds of things happening with us right now - too many and too long to mention. Suffice it to say that most days I need a "Clink" or two to {{!gwi}}

It is damp here today too, we got some flurries last evening and now it is more of a mist with it turning to rain I think by the end of the day. I will just be here doing housework stuff as we are still in the orange alert, no schools in session once again. Izzi and I are sharing my breakfast of eggs and toast. I am having hot tea. My son just called and let me know what his plans are for today. Husband is off to work, so I have the day to work around here hopefully with out too much interruption. Still clear skies, mostly, but getting colder. The leaves are mostly down. I'm getting out the winter clothes and wrapping the backyard up for another Oregon rainy season. We are hoping for snow this year, after four years with hardly a trace. My son wants to build a microscope this weekend, so we'll do that. My daughter may want to go to the darkroom. I want to take one early morning and go for a bike ride. I might go explore some of the steep windy roads in the West Hill that lead to the zoo. Or just do laps up my local hill, less scenic but a more efficient workout. Sometimes I wear a heart rate monitor on these rides. Afterwards I can look at the data and see how my heart rate spiked when the road turned upwards or when the speed rose. The rule of thumb is that your maximum heart rate is 220 minus your age. I think that is bunkum, or at least that it varies so much between individuals that it is no rule at all. I have gotten my heart rate up to 200 beats/ minute, only for a few seconds, but those were exhilarating seconds. On a pretty routine basis, I ride at 170 bpm which is 85% of my max heart rate, or a. "submaximal" heart rate. There is a whole science of training by heart rate - you are supposed to spend X time at 80%+ of max, Y time at 60%, and so on. I don't pay attention to that. I just like to get up to 170 bpm frequently and see if anything untoward happens. It is kind of my personal security blanket. There is another test you can do, which is a little more useful. You get your heart rate up to 150 bpm or so, which might mean a few minutes of jumping jacks or chopping wood or running fast. Then stop, sit down, and see how long it takes for your heart rate to settle down to 100 bpm. It should only take one or two minutes. If your heart continues to beat at a high rate for much longer, that is a worrisome sign. This is called "recovery heart rate". Finally, there is "resting pulse". The true resting pulse is taken when you are laying down and completely relaxed. In the morning, right after waking up, is a good time. Some people have a high resting pulse, some a lower one. The interesting thing is how it changes. If you get serious about exercise, you can lower your resting pulse quite dramatically. That is a sign that your heart has become more efficient, which is a good thing. I've been thinking a lot about getting older. My kids are only teenagers, and I'm fifty. I don't know when they will have kids. When I have grandchildren, I want to take them riding and skiing and fishing. That means I will have to be strong and athletic into my seventies. Gulp. My dad had a heart attack in his mid seventies. My neighbor is seventy-five and has CHF and PAH. I've got a lot of work to do, anyway that is how it feels, so I get on the bike every day and push until it hurts. It actually is kind of pleasant to hurt. I think I've learned a little about masochism. But I digress. What were we talking about? Cooking. I'm going to go through my Momofuku cookbook and make some Asian comfort food. Daughter is getting interested in sushi so we'll make some basic rolls. Son is a big ramen fan, we'll roast some pork and leeks and make a big hot bowlful. I'll make some meals for my neighbor with the health problems. And I think I will try baking bread again. I was on a low-carb kick this summer, but it turns out I need some carbs. Carbs = glycogen. Glycogen = muscle energy for efforts longer than a few minutes. No carbs = weak muscles. Doesn't work for me.

TGIF everyone. I've been too busy to get into the holiday spirit this year. Bagged putting up a tree, and didn't bother with the usual lights. Work is decorated and that's where I spend most of my time. We'll go to The Kid's for Christmas and she's all into being a Martha (Stewart), so I don't feel too deprived. It's a long weekend for me, with a rare Saturday off. It's been an odd week, including bunch of deadlines, contentious meetings and being the victim of a random act of kindness (detailed on the Conversations side). I started out my weekend Thursday night with a deep tissue massage... came home, had a glass of wine and fell soundly asleep in my chair. Ahhhhh....... Today was a trip to town for a doctor appt. during our first real snow. People got complacent, I think...wrecks and ambulances everywhere. So we grabbed some groceries and ran for home. I got my sis's package mailed.... main mission accomplished. Tomorrow I'll wrap the kids' presents, put together goodie baskets for work. Maybe bake something using the wonderful crystallized ginger one of my girls brought me from Australia. Sunday DH made an appointment for a hearing test. At noon. At Costco. On the Sunday before Christmas. argh. Clinking with a cup of eggnog laced w/ rum. Be healthy and travel safely everyone.

I will jump in and help with the dinner threads but I warn y'all I have a terrible memory about coming back! So I am sure everyone is having a wonderful meal. Tonight I am cooking a pot of fresh okra stewed with onions and tomatoes, one of our all time favorite things. A very nice neighbor has too much okra and I am glad to help him out by taking as much as he will give me! In the oven I have 2 large boneless skinless chicken breasts with cut up baby red potatoes and cut up farm store carrots, seasoned well and drizzled with olive oil nicely roasting away. It is smelling wonderful in here. OK what's cookin!

Woo Hoo, I actually have tomorrow off from work, so it really IS TGIF for me, and I thought I'd join in on this thread for a change.

Tomorrow is DH's birthday, so I asked for the day off. We're planning on going on an artist's studio tour that takes place annually in Dallas. I don't know if we'll go tomorrow or Sunday. There's also a get together at the gallery DH is involved with, so he want's to go to that, and hopes to have a new painting done in time, so I may be playing in the yard while he paints. I will also be attempting apple pie for his birthday. He usually makes it, but I asked him if he minded if I make it, since he'll be busy. He said it's the eating of the pie he enjoys the most, not the making of it, so I'll be making apple pie tomorrow. I think apple pie is his favorite food on earth.

David, I hope all goes well for your DN (nephew?).

I just had three days off, so now I get to work for four in a row. Not much going on around here but the fall colors are spectacular this year. We may be busy with the leaf peekers at the store. Other than work I just want to relax this weekend and maybe make a pot of soup...

I will probably work most of the weekend. That and clean house and catch up on laundry. I know, thrilling. As a freelancer it is nice to have lots of work to do, though.

I love pickled onions. Best with a gin sauce... about a jigger straight.

My current supervisor likes to chicken dance. He throws temper tantrums that we laughingly call chicken dancing. Not so much anymore as he got wrote up for it. David I hope your DN deploys somewhere safe!

I'm working for the umpteenth day in a row. My last day off is gone from memory. Looks like I'm now lead auditor for the factory. Last person with that title was fired so I am looking forward to a bit of a challenge. Already has me wishing I still smoked cigarettes.

Couldn't find my pickled onions so I'm clinking with dry gin straight up.

Gina, I forgot to look at your pictures before. I just went back and looked at them. So cute!

Lyra, I wish you all the best for your new responsibilities at your job. My co-worker took up sunflower seeds when she quit smoking. They keep her hands and her mouth occupied, and she has to dispose of their waste products - just like cigarettes.

Oh Lyra, how awful to have a supervisor who throws tantrums, even funny looking ones. It creates a very stressful working environment.
